Given that #13 is unlikely to make an early contribution to our performance, I wondered about a team built out of ‘depth’. Take out all of the ‘A’ listers and what have we got?

How would this team fare?

FB:  Bowey, Adams, hore

HB Rivers, Turner, McVee

C Woewodin, Sparrow, Howes

HF Billing’s JVR McAdam

FF chandler, Petty, sestan

foll: Verrall, Laurie, Windsor

i/c ; Fullerton , moniz wakefield, tholstrup, schache.

To me it looks like it has real potential, a few of the players might be underdone at this stage, but it is a really good side.  I reckon it would not be the worst team going around, and shows the depth that we have if you tale our all of the big names.  Start adding back: max, Trac, Viney, may, lever, lingers,ANB,Pickett, etc etc and see how good the team can be.

Looks like our team circa 2015 - 2016 a lot of talent and potential thank goodness we already have the stars ready and mostly available. The difference between then and now we can bring them in as they knock the door down.😁

It would win a few games, and tbh would prob beat teams we have fielded in the past.

Seriously? Imo would struggle to beat any VFL side

Would won a few I reckon but more importantly it shows that we have some significant depth to our number one team.

It's definitely going to be an interesting season this one, watching which players really step up and how others continue their development.

Isn't Petty an A lister?

Highlights an old point about how young players need the 'protection' of an established core to help them develop and to be effective.

Many players on that list we would happily say are AFL-level, but if you forced them into match ups on the opposition's very best with no counter-balance of our stars, they would get ground down and eventually destroyed.

You could put together a list of the last 22 season's Rising Star winners and it would be mind-blowing viewed from a whole-career quality perspective (except for being a little thin for tall defenders) but if you had to play them all as if it was their first couple of seasons, you wouldn't necessarily have the ultimate team right away. In fact, you could even break them badly.

And just for fun:

B:           Mills         D Talia        Sheezel

HB:        Rich          Rivers         Heppell

C:          Daicos     O'meara      Deledio

HF:        Serong    Riewoldt    Stephenson

F:          L Taylor    Hogan       Ko****knee

FOLL:   Jackson   Selwood    Walsh

Interchange: McGrath, Palmer, Haselby, Hannebery

The Casey team is a better indicator of depth.

B: Hore, Tomlinson, Adams

HB: Connelly*, McDonald, Turner

C: Howes, Oliver, Windsor

HF: Sestan, Schache, Tholstrup

F: Jefferson, B. Brown, Moniz-Wakefield

FOLL: Fullerton, White*, Steele*

IC: Verrall, Farris-White, K. Brown, Lual*, Shipp*

* = Casey listed

I know everyone has Tomlinson in their team but I'm not a believer that using Lever as a loose defender makes us a better team, rather see us play with an extra midfielder.

Oliver won't be fit enough to go straight back to the seniors he'll have to play some reserves football.

He is as a backman, but is new as a forward..

If that is the case ( and I believe you just  be pick if he is an A grader no matter what his position or in this case leave him out).

Also in his 3 games ( 2 injured in and went off) he was in A grade form with 6 and / lots of 2 twice before half time). That’s A grade form as a forward no matter if new or not.

Like to have a bet on that as Clarry won’t be picked if he can’t play close to AGL standard.

we don’t know how or often he is training in any case. As

Guessing you’re not expecting too many wins for Casey this year

Petty, JVR, Bowey, Rivers and McVee are in our A list team. Maybe Sparrow and McAdam too. Remove them from that line up and replace with lesser Casey players, and imo, yes, they will struggle to win many games

Each to their own view!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
