I’ve just bought a digital membership through the club, how long did it take for your Kayo subscription to come through? Was it via another email?

thanks,

About a month ago, Kayo offered $15 off their basic plan, so I signed up. Their basic plan was $30 at the time, so I paid $15 for the first month of a 12 month plan. Then this week they raised their prices and the basic plan became $30. They are honouring the $15 off, but I feel duped. After all, I signed up thinking I would pay $15/month. Their tricky method of $15 off allows them to raise their prices by whatever they want. But what’s the bet that if I tried to reduce the 12 month term, they’d charge me anyway? We shall see in October when I cancel.

Anyone have an opinion on whether the 4K is worth the upgrade yet? I have a 4K TV I'll be using, so I'll surely notice the difference if any. Do you?

I went from the Telstra deal to the club membership when the price rose. Very happy with the digital membership option, hope it continues to be a great deal.

likewise great deal plus nominal membership.

thanks,

I had to ring the club membership line and they sent me an email with the log in details. You have to sign up for $35 a month after the 12 month period but you can cancel that after the 12 months.  Maybe they'll continue the package deal.

Between the poor picture quality and buffering Kayo is a poor product even with the $15 discount which brings it to $20 per month. That they are advertising 4K when they cannot even get the HD product working is very ordinary.

I'm preparing to document instances of buffering and poor image quality supported by network speed tests to compare with what Foxtel claims and hopefully if enough people do this and seek compensation for false and misleading claims Foxtel will have to invest in the product so that it works as represented.

I noticed that too, got charged $20 this month instead of the $15 last month. I mean, I expect nothing less from those newscorp stooges.

The good news is there is no lock-in contract so you can cancel anytime. The deal is for 12 months but you could cancel after 1 month if you wanted, you just can't go back on at the reduced price. I will be cancelling at the end of Sept as I do every year.

You Tube has quite a lot of 4K content: and all free. From my point of view and seen through my tired old eyes the difference between 4K and high def TV is quite noticeable: 4K sharper and more 3d like.

Lucky where I live in the country, my NBN wireless delivery is quit good, and the tower is within sight of my house so download speeds are more than adequate at around 80 Mbps constantly (and soon to be upgraded).  I’m looking forward to watching the Dees in 4K next week!

There are some suggestions that Kayo has downgraded its HD package to 720p. (was at 1080p)

If this is right one is left with little choice but to pay the extra for 4k

(may just be a bug so give it a few days and in the meantime check your diagnostics)

As an aside 4k also delivers 5.1 sound. Great on F1 not sure if much difference for AFL

PS: Kayo have now said that the 720p issue is a bug and they are working on it

Oh absolutely, but there's 4K and then there's 4K. I'll wait till the footy season starts and maybe do a month of the 4K package to see if it's good enough to justify.

Big news on the NBN front

Those on 100Mb plans should have their speed upgraded to 500down /50up free of charge.

No mention of what those on 50/25 plans get.

Will it make a difference... probably not in the short term but it makes 8k a possibility

Broadband speeds are set to skyrocket for about 9 million Australians, with NBN Co proposing to make its most popular plan five times faster at no extra cost as demand for data explodes.

In a move the company says is to meet unprecedented usage of high-definition streaming and remote work, NBN Co announced plans to raise its 100/20 Mbps Home Fast product to 500/50 Mbps, and triple its Home Superfast product from 250/25 Mbps to 750/50 Mbps.

https://www.theage.com.au/technology/nbn-to-become-five-times-faster-at-no-extra-cost-20240305-p5f9vh.html

Overseas I have 500 up and down. I don't notice any difference from my 100/40 plan in Australia. Web pages open at same speeds etc. Video at same quality. Anyway it may be the future,

Singapore has plans to roll out 10Gb plus speed by 2026

On Kayo, I seem to get much better resolution (1080p, which is good enough), if I watch a game live. Resolution doesn’t seem great on replays though.

Also, to see “real” 4K, you have to sit too close, in my opinion, to your tv, for footy. This is a well respected site I use, related to the topic:

eg. For a 65 inch tv, you have to have a viewing distance of less than 2.5 meters, otherwise you can’t even see 4K. But we are talking about “real” 4K here, not streaming.

The issue with kayo has never been individual connections, the buffering etc is all to do with their servers.

They definitely compress the replays making them poor quality - I've found watching the replay within 24 hours is usually decent quality but once they snip out all the pregame/halftime etc it is compressed and makes it hard to watch.

That's been my experience as well.

Got a new telly a few months ago.  The kiwi delivery guy looked at a couple of pictures on my wall and said "You can watch the Deez win another fleg in 4K bro".

I didn't see that in the guarantee but I hope he's right

Thanks for that DJ, I'd be really excited if I had any idea what it meant.  Better quality (as mentioned their replays are unwatchable) or fast speed or both?

At it's simplest you will have access to much faster speeds.

BUT the utility of such speed is dependent upon web content providers building networks that avail themselves of the available speed

In the long term it's a good thing

Exactly, kayo buffers/pixelates regardless of connection. I can watch NBA on gamepass in HD without any issues but watching the NFL on DAZN this year was painful, especially on the AppleTV for some reason. Other live stream apps such as Optus for soccer seem to do ok and often pirate streams run better than the authorised ones! All comes down to the servers, most home connections in Australia can handle streaming HD/4K.

On a loosely related topic if you've ever wondered how many people overseas watch AFL the NRL broke all records with their recent game in Las Vegas.....

Wait for it........

Yes the TV viewing audience in the States was 61k

Why do we bother

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo said the numbers set a new audience record for NRL games in the US, and were similar to some Major League Soccer games on Fox Sports 1.

“These are positive signs in the first year of the long term venture,” he said. “We are proud of what we achieved this year in Las Vegas and have been blown away by how positively Americans have responded to rugby league.”

fwiw, someone who knows says that - for preference - you should always watch live sport thru foxtel not kayo

kayo's compression rates are meant to be much higher which is why the pixelation happens so frequently

Too right. I never had buffering issues streaming live games from Foxtel go as opposed to Kayo.

Discovered this week, only Fox broadcast games in 4k

7 broadcast games contractually aren’t in 4k

Apparently NEP - the production company that runs broadcast - had to send a lot of equipment to allow NRL in Vegas to be broadcast in 4k

So much for ‘every game in 4k’…

Not sure what is the criteria for selection as a 4k game but Friday night games seem to be rarely 4k

Strangely Collingwood only has one 4k coverage in the first 5 rounds

Pies too ugly to be viewed in 4K

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
