Verrell, Farris-White, Brown, McDonald, Sestan, Jefferson, Schche and another key forward/ruck that people want us to recruit. Throw in we'll already have Tomlinson, Adams and K. Turner in defence. Don't know how we can give them all a proper opportunity to develop/push for selection. Which raises the question again... Why the Schache re-sign? Incredibly perplexing decision 1 Quote
Demon Dynasty 17,169 Posted October 1, 2023 Posted October 1, 2023 (edited) Always risky to guage players from highlight reels as you don't see "the other bits" that a player may not be doing so well. On face value he appears to have some serious dukes and a great right hoof. Does he have a leap though to take the odd contested over a pack or across a pack? People saying he's not mobile enough. I'm not so sure. Has the feels and look of a reasonably mobile key tall. Not that dissimilar to Petty although again, the aerial side doesn't appear to be a strong suit from that footage. He also might come into the AFL fold a bit behind the eight ball physically. A little like May did in his first season? Could take a year to get somewhere near the requirements of AFL. That may mean 2025 before we see a pay off. Might be worth the chance though if he was super eager and willing to really commit to going full tilt on the training track & gym. Would be a big step up from Schache that's for sure and at this point offer more upside than either of BB & T-Mac given where they're at physically. Remember you only need to get a KF up and about in the H&A, putting in the odd decent game with some cameos thrown (see BB in 2021). Then set them up for a big tilt at performing in finals and the GF if you're lucky enough to get through a la Tom Boyd and Podds. He doesn't necessarily need to star for 3 to 5 years. 1 or 2 good or VG years might help us in picking up our next silverware. If he retires afterwards he's done his job and we'll all be patting the recruiters & FD on the back. BB a fair example of a similar pathway (to us) and helping us to get the elusive drought breaker. Incredibly perplexing decision Agreed. Schache is probably better placed in the Casey Reserves. To be honest, I've questioned this as well, with not just him but several players in the competition. When it comes to early draft pick, in the case of Schache pick 2 in the 2015 national draft, sometimes its like flogging a dead horse in the hope they'll come good based off the hype they presented in their U18 year. Yet several blokes who consistently shine at the state leagues fail to get a look in (not all of course), but especially those that pass the age of 25. Edited October 1, 2023 by ignition. 1 1 Quote

Incredibly perplexing decision Makes one think, is there a chance the club doesn't recruit another ruck/part time ruck and is planning on using the likes of Schache, McDonald and Tomlinson as cover for Max if required? I hope not, but I'm starting to wonder. Quote

I hope not, but I'm starting to wonder. Yes i was calling for Schache as Max's back up in the second half of 23 once it became apparent Grundy wasn't in favour. At least when needed for match up purposes. Not as the weekly sub of course. And especially while BB & T-Mac were no goes. However that was prior to his last 3 to 4 matches at Casey plus his minor sub appearance in the seniors at one point. For whatever reason (possibly the re-sign?) from about 4 weeks out from finals he went from looking ok in patches at Casey, to looking like a cooked lame horse who had no interest in racing at all and had forgotten how to race on top! Then there's the sub/no sub fiasco. There was no greater opportunity to use Shack than from half time in the QF. Yet he was left picking splinters out for the entire game as we floundered with our inside 50 ruck contests, particularly in the final quarter. Then there's the separate question of whether we should have used him as sub at all in that match. There weren't too many serious alternatives though, bar Hibb, who's not exactly ruck chop out material. IF (and i emphasise IF) he was re-signed after those last 4 weeks (or so) i would argue it would have to be one of the worst list decisions in recent times. ignition. 1,478 Posted May 26, 2024 Author Posted May 26, 2024 With the mid-season Rookie draft a few of days away (29th May), with one position to fill, I'm reopening this thread. If we're to push deep into September, we need to fill the void that exists in our forward line. Petty appears injured, the game has passed Brown, Schache is not AFL standard, Turner is not THE man, let's not speak of Smith, Jefferson is undersized and unproven, and McDonald is doing a phenomenal job down back. It is my belief that Tyler Keitel is THE BEST tall forward in the state league competitions and is absolutely ready to go. He hails from the same draft as Petracca and Brayshaw; the exact man who provided the list position needing to be filled. One can only hope. But I have my faith in Taylor and Lamb regardless. Here is an update of his stats from this year: Here is some updated vision from this year: https://www.afl.com.au/video/1103863/wafl-highlights-r2-west-perth-v-perth?videoId=1103863&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1712390400001 2 Quote

Travy14 2,142 Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 Will not have the AFL body or endurance. Is a reason he has dominated the WFL for so long and never got an opportunity. Not to mention he isn't even in the 24 players that have been asked to take a medical prior to the draft. Has he even nominated? 3 1 Quote
Pennant St Dee 13,460 Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 No he isn’t good enough for AFL, he ain’t a gorilla, lacks pace, lateral movement and no real X factor. Very good WAFL forward but that’s the ceiling 4 2 1 Quote

(Im Sure the arm chair experts will tell you why). We’ve had no luck when drafting for future prospects in this. Why not take a punt on a mature Key Fwd. 1 Quote

I have no idea of the stats, but there are probably less than ten players still running around from the mid-season draft a couple years back. One is on our list and looks promising, but hampered by some injury issues. Another of our former picks will possibly get picked up again this year, who we had to let go in a squeeze. Quote
Queanbeyan Demon 7,053 Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 I wish the league had a son/father rule. Imagine Harvey Keitel rocking up to training, walking over the Stafford and introducing himself . . . 1 4 Quote
poita 3,945 Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Mitch Brown has kicked 44 goals in 6 games for the Parkdale Vultures this year. I'd almost rather bring him back then look at a 28 year old from the WAFL given that neither WA team is remotely interested in him. Quote
Dee*ceiving 1,738 Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Cam Pedersen, 10 years too soon, where are you when we need you most? Only 37 and working for a university. Bring him back too! 😇 1 1 Quote
