I hope it's okay to 'take the honours' to start this week's thread. I wanted to acknowledge Aimee Mackin's debut this week and the unfolding repeat (surpassing?) of Melbourne's Irish Experiment success. The Goldy/Macca/Macca story is so uplifting, to have and to watch.

A fitting week to make her debut following the passing of RDB, who I’m sure would be pleased to see his masterstroke still reaping rewards for the Dees after all this time.

The fact she’s playing seniors so quickly suggests good things - it’s not like we’re scratching around needing to play the kids.

Looking forward to seeing Aimee make her debut and the team continue their outstanding form.

hawks are triers and will crack in but lack class. Can’t see them troubling us too much

Will be interesting to see who makes way for Aimee. Sheriff perhaps?

I'm delighted to see that Bannan's injury is not too serious. It looked nasty when it happened. Perhaps Aimee will replace her if she isn't fit in time for this game.

Lining up for the Hawks, one AINE McDonagh.

Defs a soft spot, T. But no doubt it’ll harden the moment she sets foot on the ground. 🤣

From the '31 Quotes' article on the Club site:

'Ron had the courage to believe that it could work, even though a lot of people thought he was crazy, out of his mind and destined to fail.' (Jim Stynes on the ‘Irish Experiment’)

Grapeviney, yep.

Coming in late with this:

Not sure who A.Mackin replaces (maybe suggests Banno is out?), but I'm excited. But also, you know, no pressure in your first game of Aussie Rules, pretty much ever?!

Having said that, never forget that her sister came off the bench in her first ever game (a praccy match at the 'G) and kicked a goal with (I think?) her first kick. That was a pretty good start.

She expects to play half forward, and, with only her Gaelic footy vision to go on, speed, agility, smarts and disposal skills and accuracy suggest she's got Banno's role covered! So, yeah, I  think so.

Only that 'first game of Aussie Rules, pretty much ever' thingy to deal with!

And the sister has that other important goal on her resumé, too!

Blaithin has been absolutely fantastic with her run and carry....and Aimee is supposed to be better! Wow!

I still don't think Blaithin got enough credit for locking down a position in the premiership team in her first season of the sport. We heard a lot about the cross coders in the early seasons, but considering the development of the league since then, her story is more impressive!

As well as her pace   Blaithin has a serious right leg on her, particularly for a cross coder. Gets good distance and is pretty accurate. I struggle to think of a better ball user from those imported from other sports

Early call, but A. Mackin may be that person!

Mackin in, Gay out (managed). Bannon must have recovered.

We’ve been told Maddi is a cert for next week. We were told a couple of days ago that she wouldn’t be playing tomorrow but it still wasn’t 100% confirmed. Therefore we made two banners tonight… one celebrating her 50th game and one not. 😁 We can use the celebratory one next Thursday at Mordor. Tomorrow’s banner is also a tribute to the great man, RDB. ❤️💙

Hawthorn's injury list currently includes Sarah Perkins and Tegan Cunningham. It doesn't seem that long ago that those players were playing important roles for our team. It further underlines how extraordinarily good our recruiting and list management has been over the past three or four years.

Hopefully Maddy Gay is purely precautionary, but it makes sense to give players such as Gay and Pearce a rest against the weaker sides to ensure they are available when we need them most.

Good luck to Aimee Mackin for her debut game. Dees to win by 40 points plus.

Don't be surprised if we get a bit of a fright with this game.

Given how much fun it is to watch this current Melbourne side play - the chains of handballs out of the backline, through the corridor and then a pass to a leading forward. Women’s footy has come such a long way in such a short time. I wonder what the score would be if this Melbourne side could play the original one?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
