I asked the question, and to Cal’s credit he answered, but without seeing the rules, it feels like we’re missing something given what NGAs are supposed to address:

Why wouldn’t a Samoan multicultural background be included ??! It’s bizarre AFL ruling.

example … Cam McKenzie was in Saints NGA as under South African heritage. His dad Rob was born in South Africa and his mum Delia was born in Canada before growing up in South Africa. Rob being born in South Africa meant Mackenzie was eligible to join St Kilda's Next Generation Academy.  He was top 10 quality so the Saints missed out and he was picked by the hawks.

Dees should seek a change !! Now !!!! Put up some kahunas Mr Pert or get out !!!

I hope we seek clarification. The problem may be whilst Samoa has its own language English is widely spoken.  Well i guess is English is widely spoken pretty well every where now.

I think it may be like the AFL free agency compensation. You get what the AFL wants you to get.

I asked co pilot.

In the context of the AFL’s Next Generation Academy (NGA), a “diverse background” refers to players who come from either an Indigenous or multicultural background. Here’s a breakdown:

Indigenous Background

Multicultural Background

Interesting, KPF at 5 and we have a choice of a few good mids at the effective pick 7.

Depending on what we see is available next year i would not be surprised if we traded our future 1st back into this draft.

Given that Ah-Mu is now off the 'books' we make look at a tall with a traded back future 1st given that both TmC and May are heading towards the sunset.

my best guess...

  • blue for northern academy
  • red for sa
  • yellow for wa

i thought it might be bold for vic country but that doesn't seem to be the case...

Blue is Allies not just academies. Shanahan for instance isn’t an academy eligible player. And Tassie guys.

Bold is Vic Country. Dandy players can play for country and FOS is from the bush just plays for Oakleigh.

No way Jack Whitlock goes that late. I'd nab him with the Nibbler pick if he did go that late.

There’s also no way Gerreyn goes before Hamish Davis or Bo Allan. Hugh Boxshall coming into calculations after a big game in last week’s semi final of the WAFL Colts.

Charlie Burke may have to take the long route similar to Priddis and Tim Kelly but the kid has great work rate and attitude.

Tom Bell and Clancy Dennis 2 KPDs who will be looked at

Yes prefer my phantom draft over this one.
Agree @Pennant St Deethat Boxshall might have got a few recruiters to notice him after the weekend game and is now on recruiters boards. He a strong midfielder with good skills and tackles hard.  I only saw him v Vic metro and Vic country.  Liked his contested work. He had limited time at CBA but competed hard against Langford and Hynes.  Maybe still a 4th round pick imv or rookie.

Hugh has more upside than Urquart IMO, but his kicking is very poor, for AFL level but improving.  Absolute bull, with a huge tank and is fearless.

Tackles with intensity and repeated efforts are exceptional. Well worth a late pick for any side

My early top 10 for next year

1. Finn O'Sullivan - 181cm Vic Country
2. Levi Ashcroft - 179cm Vic Metro (Lions F/S)
3. Sid Draper - 180cm South Australia
4. Josh Smillie - 194cm Vic Metro
5. Leonardo Lombard - 178cm Allies (Suns Academy)
6. Tyler Welsh - 191 cm South Australia  (Crows F/S)
7. Jagga Smith - 181cm Vic Metro
8. Christian Moraes - 182cm Vic Metro
9. Tom Gross - 182cm Vic Metro
10. Ben Camporeale - 184cm South Australia  (Carlton F/S)

This suggests that we should be looking forward to more bidding for academy and father/sons but not to the scale extent that we saw in last week’s draft.

Where is Ben Camporeale rated now?

Would his brother be worth nabbing around that mark Adam?

He's a big inside mid with average athleticism at best. Can kick though.

Ben Camporeale is in the 12-18 range.  He’s going to be a very very good pickup for Blues.  (His brother Lucas at about 45/48).

Here was my phantom section 11 to 20 from last week.

11. Murphy Reid - Sandringham
12. Tobie Travaglia - Bendigo

13. Harry Armstrong - Sandringham
14. Taj Hotton - Sandringham

15.  Jobe Shanahan - Bendigo (NSW)

16. ***Blues match bid. Ben Camporeale - Glenelg SA ( father son)

17. Bo Allan - WA
18.***Lions match bid. Sam Marshall - Bris Lions academy

19. Joe Berry - Murray

20. Alix Tauru - Gippsland

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
