Mihocek is only 192cm. Both Rivers or Hibbo could play on him. He is much more a leading forward than a contested marking forward

May plays on Mihocek. He is a very strong contested mark. Rivers won't be suitable.

Interesting changes. Guess Smith plays back which is OK. My only concern is if Cox drifts forward and has a day out like he did against Richmond in 2018!

Unless it becomes clear we need a third tall at some point in the match, Smith wont play back (IMO).

Why would he?

Hibbo comes in for turner as a defender so they don't need anyone else to go back.

I'm tipping Smith plays on murphy and looks to negate his intercept marking

Does seem like we are a bit unbalanced in our tall defenders vs their potential of 4 tall forwards.

However, the forecast is looking very wet between 7-9pm tomorrow. Pies may have gone too tall for the conditions. How does Mason cox go in the wet?

Who are their 4 tall forwards ? McStay …yes ..Cox as a resting ruckman ..Miochec  same height as Hibberd & Rivers & if Howe plays forward on Lever well good luck to him …his form has been very average . Who else am I missing ?

Additons from the KB line up are McDonald, Oliver and Bowey.  Not too shabby ins I reckon.

And Petty and Melk.  didn;t play that day either.

I can live with this being about the best we can offer right now

Even more difficult if Gawn is next to him

and 18 with Flag experinece, and the others have proven themselves under heat  e.g Judd McVee. Joel Smith and Chandler.

They'll use Cox as the resting tall up forward.

Smith is not a backman. Gets completely lost down there and this has been very evident.

Agree. If Cox and Cameron are in the 22, therein lies our bigeest problem, unless it buckets down

The experience in this side cannot be underestimated. This is an enormous game. Crowd noise will be off the chart. Hot footy. A massive advantage of a home prelim for the winner. We have gone for a very experienced side who has played a lot of finals together.
Backline is looking far more experienced now with 6 premiership defenders.
Midfield is entirely made up of premiership players, including Hunter, and only the forwardline is “inexperienced” with JVR, Chin and Smith. But Smith has been around a long time and played in 2018.

Mihocek is nothing like Walker!
I am not saying Rivers will play on him, I’m just saying the height difference isn’t that big and he isn’t a “tall”, just like Fritsch isn’t a tall.
Mihocek averages 1.2 contested marks a game. He is a leading forward not a tall marking forward. He needs someone who can go with him on the lead rather than in the air. Hibbo could certainly play on him.
And hey if Rivers goes to him he’d need to be accountable the other way. Much like if Fritsch plays on Moore.

Yet is rated for above average for inside marks going at 2.4. There's where he mostly does his work when his using his work rate and running ability to work his opponent up and down.

Rivers is not there to do a complete lock down role.

That simply tales away his game of rebounding and playing that quarter back role.

They have gone for experience. I personally hope it buckets down.

Exactly.

This has been evident all year if people had actually paid attention to watching Collingwood.

I suspect McDonald will be given a job to limit Moore, because staying tight on the opposition's key reader of the play is a great way to get your brain back in the right spaces, and because Moore's limited preparation will minimise the impact of any lingering preparation lag for McDonald as well.

That said, in general I'm too much of a fan of the negating forward because I deeply hate watching the inside-50 -> turnover uncontested mark -> rebound 50 routine.

Gawn will be D50 most of the night. With McDonald there we have that outlet kick. The fact is, it’s going to be a wet game. Hibbo’s cleanliness at ground level will be essential to our d50. If it was a dry game, I have no doubt Turner would have played.

Also, watch out for an early tactical sub of Cox or Cameron if it does rain. Ginnivan will come on and we’ll need someone for him which suits the Hibbo choice.

Just saw the Pies team.

Much kudos to McCrae not playing favourites and picking on form - e.g Lipinski, Markov,   and saying to Ginnivan, even if the sub,  your'e not quite rehabilitated yet mate.  I'd query one0trick pont Howe lining up forward. No hangers will be taken tomorrow . So what does Howe offer.?

Yes he’s a very good mark. On the lead.
He needs a good leading defender. Not a tall who can’t run. May is exceptionally good on the lead for his size which is why he played on him before when McStay wasn’t in the team.

My guess is that Hibbo will start on him and McVee will go to Elliot. Back up option is throw Smith back, Hibbo to Elliot and Lever to Mihocek. Gawn can float back to help nullify Cox/Cameron. If it’s wet it just helps us with ground level ball, which is our biggest issue in defense.

May will take McStay

i’m feeling a lot worse after the teams have come out

I can visualise Cox marking inside 50 with Rivers / Hibbo flapping away at his shoulders. and it’s making me sick

Against two rucks and two key forwards you have to play two key backs plus Lever.

Having said that, Goody and the SC can’t be accused of not having balls

Again, Lever role isn't to play on the number 1 key forward. He's there to play the 3rd intercept defender.

Asking Gawn to float back at all costs to nullify Cox/Cameron is just completely running him to the ground. You're asking far too much from him.

Interesting The Age is reporting now Ginnivan is sub.  I thought that was an hour before the game.

Would this be correct??

Mcrae said he'd be sub.

But formal announcement is an hour before game.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
