I lost us the game! 😭

I laugh now, I certainly wasn’t laughing at the time though. I was beside myself for making such a stupid mistake. No one in the DA was angry, in fact they found it amusing. One of the OGs said, “we know you’re going through a really difficult time right now, we all love you, nobody wants to see you so upset.” Then he added, “but please never, ever touch the target ever again. Ever! Don’t even look at the target. Forget the target even exists.” 🤣🤣🤣

It wasn't a mistake wcw.

jvr was not looking at anything in the crowd.

They are trained to ignore all distractions, including targets and big maxy heads.

If he WAS relying on the target then I feat he ain't gonna make it as AFL player.

Yes, 4th spot is staring us straight in the face (and a home final vs the Pies without Mr Wonderful)

So steel ourselves for a win against the Hawks and that should be enough. Port win today and the equation is on it's way to being completed

Ultimately, we'd get to rest a few starters against the Swans and then get another week off with the pre-finals bye weekend

Freshened up for an assault in September

So the loss last night gives us some clarity.  2nd spot is just about out of our reach especially if Port wins today

But of course, it's one week at a time

Not really a good idea to rest players vs Swans even if top 4 is sewn up, that’s 2 weeks off and win your first final and come prelim it’s 1 game in a month

No you didn't. You always win us the game.

And if JVR is on the other side you're in the perfect spot.

Sorry I love joking on here any other week but on top of everything you mentioned that has happened to you lately then the blatent racism and racism enablers on here in the last 24 hrs I'm not finding much humour in it all, sorry wet blanket I know.

Not a good 24 hrs for DL.

All good, Layz. DL is an awesome place to hang for probably 95% of the time. The other 5% is handleable because of the 95% so we just bide our time and things will be back to normal soon enough. 💕

I'd like to agree on handleable but sometimes it just isn't and I won't be tolerating any of it or wasting my free time in it.

Further to the above wcw, jvr was shooting for goal, not a penalty, but you get my drift (this is from an article about the maltidas- and the excerpt about cortnee vine's winning penalty)

'Penalty shootouts are fastidiously prepared long before they arrive. Every player picks their target, hammering in practice shots again and again until the precise movement is etched into their muscle fibres. But with her name 10th on the list of 11 Matildas penalty-takers, Cortnee Vine did not really think she would have to step up.

Yet after 19 penalty kicks and the shootout score at 6-6, Australia’s eyes turned to the 25-year-old as she dutifully made her way to the spot. Brow furrowed in focus, Vine’s calm belied the fact this was her first World Cup and first penalty shot for the national team. She said afterwards she could not hear the 49,461-strong crowd, that she was able to block it out and focus on the task at hand.'

You’re the type of poster we least need to go M.I.A. “Don’t let the bastards get you down” (says she who routinely lets the bastards get her down). We’re better than them, Layz, and we’re the majority. 🤗

Maybe but in overseas sports, it's common practice especially in soccer

These days, the best are just plug in and play and whilst not playing, they'd be simulating all the footy stuff without the contact

A bit like the riders in le tour where they still ride a fair bit on the rest days

Our season of footy is now a marathon in terms of the amount of running involved so any rest can be beneficial.  QF winners more often than not win the PF

And in the Smith era as a player & coach, I believe we won 7 or 8 of the 10 flags whilst having 2 full weekends off in September ... more importantly having fresh legs against tired legs

6 or 7 years ago I would have been concerned about coming out rusty but I've bought into modern methods

Spent the arvo in the Swan Valley being a little too naughty cruising the wineries, breweries and cool spots to have a fang.

I’m disappointed we didn’t win but I’m in no doubt that we have the capabilities to win the ducking premiership.

Any idea how they do this? I sat near the boundary for the first time in years last night and the abuse was wild. I know we did some chant stuff before we paid Collingwood, but I’d be fascinated to know how they prepare for that noise and abuse if anyone knows.

A “new rule”? That’s been the rule since forever. Last night was a one-off. The target stays.

The incident to which you refer happened in the second quarter and it was actually me holding the target at that time. I’m really sorry I messed up. Truly I am. But if you think JVR missed the goal because I held the target in the wrong place, then you’re not giving him any credit for having a brain, nor good eyesight.

Nah. I didn't think that was why he missed. I reckon he has a brain. Buuuuuut...it can't have helped.

Fair enough. When I watch the video of the goal line angle he clearly doesn’t touch the ball. I feel like the ARC didn’t take the necessary time. They are now sacrificing decision making for time efficiency, because everyone was getting annoyed with the process mid season.

There’s no evidence that the ball was ever touched. It was a mistake, which I can live with. What I can’t live with is that the system is designed to mitigate errors, and in this case I think all it did was highlight its own inabilities.

I also think the argument that it was clearly not touched, and that the technology isn’t good enough aren’t mutually exclusive. The tech isn’t designed for our game, and it isn’t uniformly incorporated at all games. We should expect a better system. The AFL expects players to make split second decisions correctly or miss games, yet it can’t design a decision making system for goals that does the same thing with the luxury of a lot more time.

Thom Browne said this morning on Seven that the AFL is working on ball trajectory tech. Hope that’s the answer.

Unless they can detect deviations in the order of millimetres, it will only be marginally better than the ARC as we can pick up finger flicks where there is no real ball deviation.

I think they should partner with a university to develop something that is able to detect the faintest of touches. Perhaps it’s not possible.

The easiest thing is to allow a goal and then overrule if there is sufficient evidence and not the other way around. Give the attacking the the benefit of doubt.

Next time I go I'll be spending more time in the valley for sure.

The boat cruise we did from Barracks was amazing but we really raced through the 2 Wineries and 1 Brewery that day.

I saw a segment on this a few years ago (can't remember which club it was) but players wore headphones that had recordings of a few grand final crowds on an extended loop.

Instead of Kingy on the First Crack talking about Max Gawns influence being the difference to our W-L record, maybe he should delve a little deeper and have a look at the treatment he receives in the games where his influence is nullified.

He is being constantly blocked off the ball and being held held in marking contests on our dump kicks down the line.  This has direct correlation to his lack of influence in our losses.  It would be great if they were to highlight that once in a while.

The way I’ve heard what they are currently attempting to develop (and this was discussed by football journos, so take that for what it’s worth) is that it’s essentially 2 data points tracked at either end of the ball. The theory being that they then can measure the rotation of the ball through the time it could have come into contact with a player and evaluate if the trajectory shifts at all off the expected path. I imagine it’s similar to the ball path technology they use in the DRS for the cricket.

So, if I understand it correctly, last night they would have been able to see if the ball deviated less than .01% of its expected path in the time it could have come in contact with a hand.

If they get it right it’ll be a huge improvement. I also imagine it’ll help predict where the ball is when it travels high and the goal umpire asks to check - and all we have is vision from a camera 200 metres away at a weird angle.

2 wineries and 1 brewery is pretty standard fare here in Perf. If you’re not totally munted after all that opportunity then you’re just a rank amateur mate 😂

THE PETRACCA GOAL

Can anyone clear up for me three things:-

The first pertains to why the AFL official last two minutes of the game on Youtube now does NOT include all of the last two minutes. It is in fact abridged to not include viewing of  how long the conversation was between the goal umpire and the Field umpire No 23 after Petracca had kicked the winning goal. What is there to hide by not including this very important part, and actually how long they spoke for?

Secondly, from what could be seen from the fence side behind the goal area it is apparent to some that there was more words spoken than just what was understood to have been said. Do others understand this to be the case? Why was that?

Third of course we have the situation that there is only one angle of viewing that has been shown to the public. Why?

But it is not just Max being blocked. I have noticed a marked increase in a marking competition, our players are constantly blocked off the ball and another opposition players moves in and takes the mark. The umpires never pay the free. I'm presuming that they have to be a certain meterage away from the incoming ball before a free will be paid. If it is allowable why don't our boys do the same thing.  Can someone who knows the rules better than me clear this up for me. What is allowable blocking??

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
