lions have won every game at the Gabba and lost half of their games away from it.

Go Dees. However it will require a much better effort from our worrying fwd line again.

Maybe Bbb will play a blinder. Our backline is wonderful but our small brigade are not doing much and I can't see where a winning score will come from.

Petty needs to go fwd. We simply can't have just one tall again.

My wife is making her season 2023 debut at the footy this Friday and joining me at the President's Lunch (dinner?).

She has a 100% win record at the footy but if we lose there is another person we can blame.

Maybe but I don’t think that Chandler falling off a perch was part of the plan so they may need to reconsider that one…

I reckon by the end of the season, Chandler will be back at the expense of Woey, JVR for Melksham, Clarry for JJ and Fritta for Spargo.

I don't agree with the Spargo one, but I think this is what we'll do if we're at full strength.

If our backline is on song we don't need a big score to win. Definitely need an extra tall up forward and Gawn/Grundy aren't the answer

Only joking. We are the underdogs this week.

Dees missing Oliver and Fritsch.  Lions missing only Dunkley.

Memo to Simon Goodwin

1- tag Lachie Neale

2- tag Will Ashcroft

3- Play through the corridor when we can

4- hypnotize Kozzzy to remember the player he was in round 1

5- let Gawn have 65% of ruck time

Serious question: Has hypnotism ever been used to assist an AFL player?

He is.
GWS in 2021 is the last time he’s attended a loss.

My prediction is they're going to start reducing Kozzy's TOG and play him through the midfield like the first 10 rounds. And that this was always the plan...

His attack on the contest has been off since round 1 and the one thing he has been bringing is forward pressure. I’m not sure why we’d suddenly take away the one thing he does well and ask him to do more of the thing he hasn’t been doing (winning contested ball).

We also can’t afford to weaken our forward pressure with BBB, 2 rucks and no Chandler.

I think we'll see Chandler back, as I noted above, and we'll see Kozzy's involvement as a burst player from stoppages like he was through the first 10 rounds...

Kozzie and Chandler at their peak game are match winners.

To see them both back in great form is vital.

I'm really concerned if they persist with bombing long into F50 Andrews will have a field day and set up attacks repeatedly.

BB has not shown any ability to take contested marks, nor has he demonstrated any real ability to chase or tackle effectively when the ball is in dispute or in the opposition's possession. I know some people will not agree but personally I think we'd be better served playing JVR or even Schache over BB atm.

BBB isn’t there to chase or tackle, and he’s no contested marking beast. But he had 1 goal last week, had a free 25m out that Sparrow kicked under advantage and hit the post so could easily have had 3 last week. He also leads which is vital to making space for the others.

Bring JVR in to play with him, and combined they’ll have Andrews dropping his head as he is wont to do when getting beat..

Schache can’t be picked ahead of either BBB, JVR, TMac in a moon boot, Joel Smith etc etc, he’s not AFL standard

BBB leads to the right areas that will push and pull Andrews and make him commit to go or allow easy spot ups. But we have to use the right option. And we have to move it quickly.

The longer we take and the more we dump it in, the more we play into the strengths of the opposition and not BBB.

It has been an overemphasis on helping our defence in the past - but now I can see us trying to get it going but it sputters unless you constantly reinforce it and not dwell on the errors and the clangers.

Take Angus for example - some on here want him traded for his misuse but he is one of the few that will take on the corridor and when he doesn’t hit it - it stands out - because the rest are just kicking it sideways and abdicating the responsibility.

I think Friday night is a great opportunity to test our quick movement forward and marrying that with our press to see how we balance the two best.

Does JVR and/or Chandler come back in?

Can JJ get his hands on enough ball?

Will Kozz go into the middle?

Will we attack more freely this week?

Brisbane have no doubt set themselves for this game as I think Adelaide have for next week. We really only need to win one of these but I reckon the team wants them both so should be a great couple of weeks.

He is not a midfielder full stop but tell my you think he is just interested.

Well said. Agree with all.

With BBB in, I'd have Gawn/Grundy out of the F50. Only 1 is required to bring the ball to ground and more than 1 becomes a liability once it has been.

Would like to see Chandler (early season version) and JVR back but don't think it will be this week.

Ok - didn't realise our KPI's for a full forward were that low - I hope I'm wrong we shall see.

Whatever you think of Brown, you might be interested to know that his 2023 season averages in most metrics are higher than Schache's career averages (disposals, marks, goals, score involvements).

Whatever anyone’s interest in Brown and Schache, I’d swap both for a mid 20’s angry, leading forward who likes to hit packs and kick goals.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
