Maynard has a good relationship with Melbourne players. His brother played for us.

Also, he played for Vic Metro with Tracc and Gus in 2014. Those boys go way back.

    Who are your three Irishmen? I've got four in mind: Jim Stynes, Sean Wight, Tadgh Kenneally and Zac Tuohy. For what it's worth, I like Mason Cox and believe his ability to get to 100 AFL games is a huge achievement. History has shown that it's been harder for Ameericans to learn our game than the Irish.

    The definition of "import" perhaps needs clarification, too. There's bloke who was born in Austria who came to Australia as a 4 year old who played alright. Hint: Ukranian father and Russian mother. Played for Carlton (and St Kilda, although no-one cares about that bit.)

    I have no idea what went on between Cox and Petracca, and, frankly don't care.

    I thought he was a human being and a bloody good cricketer: he took over the mantle of the greatest German Cricketer from me. Most human beings are 'flawed', and I'm not sure what 'Legend' means. A legend is someone invented by historical mythology.

    Maynard is a bloody good defender. He can cross the line a few times and be a little macho but i like the mongrel in him. Its not the Melbourne players' [censored] don't stink (apologies for the crude analogy) as well and we probably have multiple players that opponent fans cannot stand. 

    I recall the rumours of him coming to Melbourne as well - not sure how real they were - but May, Maynard, Lever would have been an awesome FB line.

    Just one comment on Cox. As i recollect he didn't have the same demeanour that he had at the start of his career, and for me, i'm a little disappointed that things have changed. There are celebrations and celebrations. There are signs and there are signs, and there are put downs and put downs.

    ‘Maxy’ Maynard is the GM at Casey. I chatted to him, Mark Weideman, Kelly O’Donnell and T-Macs old man in the bar near where I sit a year or so ago during a game. He played for us around 1980-81 I think?

    Sean Wight was Scots. From Glasgow. Nickname at the club was Haggis.

    Grundy was the best big man on the field.

    Agreed, legend. Flawed in the sense that off-field indiscretions would often overshadow his performance.

    Ultimately that had little bearing on people’s affection for him. It probably enhanced it.

    That's the mighty Alex J, who I identify with because in some circles, his nationality is given as Austrian, as some looney tunes say about me. In other words, both of us were born to Dispossessed refugees who happened to be living in a refugee camp at the time. I said to one Priest who said, You're not German, you're Austrian. I replied, Hey, if my parents would have been refugees in Japan, would you call me Japanese? ( The White Supremacist priest in question understood what I was saying. He once told his class about the great, great benefits of living under British Colonial rule. He said, They left great infrastructure. I burst out laughing...)

    And, with regard to the PetCox drama, I was just curious as to the real reason why two decent blokes might blather away after a game like that.

    Yep, played a bit of Rugby and Soccer growing up in Canberra as well I believe. Footy didn't come along until his early teens.

    By import I mean growing up OS with no AFL background.

    Bumped into him at Richmond Dan Murphy one day. He looked immaculate in his suit, and I said, You are the famous Ukrainian/Russian footballer and your name is Alex... He ignored me and walked away...

    Not my experience, I met him several times and he was very humble and gracious.

    Saw him at a lunch in st Kilda 4-5 weeks ago along with big nick, tuddy etc. Aged but very nice bloke.

    Not saying it was his attitude: he obviously misread my intentions. I thought he simply doesn't wanna be Jezza when he's buying his beer and tobacco, if you get my drift. I wasn't casting 'aspersions' or perversions, ok; more of a note about how I obviously came across...😂🤣😎I loved the guy, loved watching him play.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
