The team always looks better with Lever playing the back pocket interceptor the problem is since we moved Petty up the ground and is now injured we haven't had a CHB. Hibberd is too small and Tomlinson too slow I'd rather see D.Turner take over CHB but they are not playing him in front of Tomlinson and Hibberd. The rest of the positions pick themselves. Chandler should be used as the sub.

I know we can bemoan lack of depth at times. But that Casey side would push some of the Melbourne sides I've seen us out on the park over the years!

Certainly got depth, it's just depth in specific areas where we lack. Hopefully some opportunities the get games into Turner, Woewodin, Howes, Laurie in the back end.

Depth is only expected to come in and be bottom 6 in the side. When an Oliver goes down it requires the other midfielders to lift, as both Petracca and Sparrow have done. That allows the player coming in to fill a role to the best of his ability. Everyone bemoans Harmes but he cones in and plays his role to his ability, you can’t ask for more than that.

No White, Munro, Grey, Buntine, Steele.

Are you saying they wouldn't make the Casey team or you are just putting listed players in their best spots ?

I recon Lever, May, McVee, Salem, Hibberd, Rivers, Hunter, Oliver, Langdon, Petracca, Petty, Neal-Bullen, Fritsch, van Rooyen, Pickett, Gawn, Brayshaw, Viney, Bowey, Sparrow, Grundy and Spargo are all gased.

With the exception of Farris-White I think every other player would get a game ahead of a Casey player when fit. If you want to be specific White gets a game ahead of Farris-White.

Pretty much agree, though I think last week showed the value of a third tall defender, freeing Lever up to play his best role.  Yes, "even just" Tomlinson, who in my view played his role very well.

Interesting. I wasn't necessarily being critical of your analysis, just wanted to be clear as I enjoy your insights.

Personally, I think you may be overlooking the team chemistry. Eg, Munro: lifts everyone in the team.

Jefferson?

I'm with you Bystander.  Depending on team balance, I think at least 3 of those Casey listed players would get in ahead of some MFC listed players.

That was a Wednesday win for Goodwin picking Tomlinson for a role last Friday. He is definitely an option when playing against an opposition tall fwd line.

I have been so happy with Chandler I could live with Sparrow as the sub, Chandler's defensive running is elite, and would like to see Pickett rotated through midfield more to get him in the game. He is more than a small forward and could cover Sparrows role.

Interesting point made but I think it would be hard to drop a developing player for a Casey player. I don't think we will ever have a full list playing together so a player like Munro would be safe.

This week's possible team.

The VFL team exists only to develop AFL players so of course they will be preferred. Who are the better players is another question. Dunstan aside and now it seems Harmes as well the AFL side at Casey are weak in the midfield. Thus White is an automatic selection. Same for Munro, Buntine, Grey etc

Salem, Bowey, Hibb & Mcvee are all competing  for three spots imv.  Whether that means you use the fourth off the bench?

That allows Petty in to go back to his usual role in defence which Frees up Lever as the interceptor on the oppo's third tall or medium/tall.

If you don't have the above which frees up Lever, we are pretty much losing the Demon DNA down back that helped us win the flag.  No thanks.

In the short term until Petty returns surely we need Tomo to remaim for the very same reason.

Alternatively Disco but for mine only on medium/tall defenders if this presents as a match up option.

We need BBB back in as the best KTF option to draw the oppo's biggest/best defender on the lead and free up Roohey out the back in the same way we need Petty down back for Lever.

That means one of Smith, Chandler or Spargo miss.

At this stage im not sure Joel will make the grade so im saying Smith but i also think Spargo has been struggling of late.

We also need an extra extractor / distributor to assist Clarry & Rivers at stoppages & CBs to improve our clearances & outlet run / chains.

JJ or Dunstan initially as sub imv.

Gut feel is Dunstan for this particular role but would want to see some serious form etc at Casey on his return from injury beforehand.

In reality Dunstan appears to be out of favour with Goody though.  So realistically this would most likely be JJ regardless of what happens at Casey.  JJ's form also VG there being BOG in their 1 point victory last week.

Do you really believe that, or is he just not quite reaching Goody's KPIs for what he is being asked to do?

You might be correct Mono.  KPI's might be the 'out-of-favour' part or certain other aspects of his game.

I'm not suggesting Goodwin has something personal against him just that, for whatever reason, he hasn't been selected in a long while.

No doubt it's also a form issue and what's best for the team etc.  The form side was very good though in the lead up to the injury.  He was in Casey's top 3 to 5 over a number of weeks prior.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
