Carlton game was a step in the right direction in terms of our use from half back but our forwards were still a mess and the midfield didn’t exactly link up like a well oiled machine either.

We win by being brillant defensively, but too defensive for your liking and so there is still 'a clear gap in the capabilities of the sides'.

IMO Collingwood are the best team in it because of their intangible belief and ability to win when things aren't going their way. They have lost four games in a year and two of those were close games (the two finals).

But I also believe that their belief isn't always enough to overcome deficiencies in their game which, if we play to our best, we can exploit (as can others). And the gap isn't as big as others argue - if we win, we'll both have the same record against the top 4 (1-2).

Good points, well made.

They def have a, deserved, psychological edge with their record in final quarters.

And part of that is everyone - fans, media and opposition teams - all think they'll run over teams in the last quarter.

We had a similar psychological edge in the first half of last season in terms of opposition teams struggle to penetrate our incredible defence.

But once teams started opening us up with fast ball movement, thst aura disappeared.

Same thing will happen to the pies one they inevitably lose a couple of close one.

But don't get me wrong, I think the pies are a really, really good team.

I also think we are too.

Not by my defintion of what a great side is.

A great side does not have their 2022 finals record.

They lost 2 of 3 finals last season for pete's sake - their first finals appearance in years.

They didn't even make the grand final, let alone win it.

We won the flag in 2021, having completely dominated the finals series, playing some of the most dominant finals footy ever.

I don't recall many posters or pundits calling us a great team after winning our first 10 games straight in 2022. In fact, papering over cracks was a more common phrase used on here.

But the pies, coming of a very disappointing 2022 finals series, and on the back of being 11-1, aided by the gift of 7 games at the G, are a GREAT team?

Give me a spell.

Fair dinkum, they are very good, I'm not arguing with that, but how about we wait till they actually achieve something before collectively anointing  them as some juggernaut, generational team.

TBH, I never understand this view of some, that they are only happy if you beat a side at its best.

Who gives a rats’ who is in or out, if you win?

Do we go back and examine premierships to see who was in and out of the losing side?

Get the wins, make the GF and win it.

Because I don't see this game as some litmus test. 

And I don't buy into the weekly pretender or contender bull dust.

Take the lion's loss. Doesn't change my rating of the lion's chances of winning the flag one iota.

 I believe goody and Lever when they say it's all about being in our best shape come finals. Not now.

If we win, well great.

If we lose, unless we get demolished, my confidence in winning the flag will be undiminished.

How can that  possibly be true when we have now had almost exactly the same fixture in terms of difficulty of opponent, have had a much togher fixturr with travel aand breaks (after Monday, the pies will have played 8 of their 13 games at the G), have lost three more games, yet STILL outscored the pies?

Maybe it is tbe 'eye test' i have heard footy media trot out (as of their perception trumps the objective fact of the ladder)?

Also, the Lions loss to the Hawks doesn’t change their outlook ‘one iota’??

The don’t make iotas like they used to. They need to win games like that against the worst teams at that venue. Simple as that. 

Collingwood aren’t unbeatable but they just win at the minute, and that’s all that matters.

If we are to beat them we have to be near perfect defensively and effective going forward.

No doubt pies playing well but their last 5 games who have they beaten WC, blues, gws , nth , swans all teams in the bottom 8, we haven’t taken any real scalps & just reinforces of the uneven draw

I am I right in assuming because Casey are playing tomorrow they've named a side that also includes players that might not be playing, assuming some players will be held over as emergencies for Melbourne's Monday game? The fact that Smith & Tomlinson haven't breen named for Casey would indicate they're staying in the Melbourne side with Hibberd coming in for Bowey. Who replaces Harmes as sub? Hopefully Jordon, despite being named for Casey.
