Were we a better team than Collingwood that year Macca? First answer that comes to mind!

Might have been the one that got away although we didn't even reach the prelim final that season despite having a 16 & 6 record (did the same last year)

Probably my first season that I remember clearly. Seemed to promise so much especially with that brilliant win over the Immortal Hawks but delivered little. 

During that 1990 season we defeated Essendon (Grand Finalists) twice and we beat the Eagles twice in the season proper (they knocked us out of the finals)

The Pies beat us easily by about 8 or 9 goals but not on the Queens Birthday ... we beat Carlton in the QB clash

And with a 16 & 6 record we still managed to lose to North Melbourne by 21 goals!  Oyvey 🙄

Yes apart from some of the notable clashes in the post above we beat Hawthorn in consecutive weeks ... round 22 and in the Elimination final

We couldn't get past the Eagles who a year or 2 later became a colossus

Remember in 98 we lost to Geelong by 95 then St Kilda by 85 the week after? Or in 2000 when Carlton got us by 98 points? 

It's been a while since we've been given a good hiding.

Jeepers ... I must have wiped that memory as I can't recall that game.  It was actually quite a shock seeing the scoreline on AFL Tables

1971 we were on top of the ladder (unbeaten) for the first 5 rounds whilst the Pies were in 3rd place for the same 5 rounds

And in round 6 the Pies beat us to take top spot (we dropped to 3rd)

By the end of the season we'd dropped to 7th after starting with an 8 & 1 record

 

 

That first quarter stat (above) for Oliver is rather curious.

From my memory he had a squillion disposals and was bog quite clearly. Am I missing something here?

 Garry Lyon's book says 1990 is the one they rue and that got away.

Both petty and spargo will come in.

I think there is a good chance a regular 22 will be managed or some such. If so that would be one. 

But if not I'm guessing harmes comes out. And jordon is the sub.

i think all AFL data is generated by champion data, and i assume so is the player rnakings.

I just tried to find a defintion of how they calaculate it, but unbelievably struggled to find one. 

I found this def from this 2020 article

(note the authour notes about the table - 'i went looking for a similar explanation of the AFL Player Rating system on the AFL website, but any such information seems to have been removed in the latest upgrade of the site). 

(also note: i'm not sure if this formula was adopted - does anyone have a recent defintion?)

Oliver had 16 touches at the first break. He would have got to 45-50 quite easily if he didn't spend sub 80% TOG after that first quarter. He started both the third and fourth quarters on the bench. At first I thought he was injured, because I honestly don't remember him ever ever ever starting a quarter on the bench. But no, he was just being heavily managed.

Urgh, I wonder how many teams in AFL/VFL history have made a grand final in the same season as being beaten by 98 points by a team that didn’t make said Granny.

AFL Tabes says it was 92 points.
