Mid-Season Trade Period

The mid-season draft is good enough as a stop-gap solution. This has a very NBA kind of feeling to it which I don't like.

Let the list managers earn their paychecks in October.

I hate the idea, but seems as though Goody wants it, which surprises me.

No coach can be entrusted with the care and well being of the game, not even ours.

I'm sure there was a player who was traded mid-season back in the early 80s who ended up playing against the same opponents two weeks in a row.

Silvio Foschini?

I would keep the trade period open for the first 6 weeks of the season and then slam it shut. Essentially, I would try to make sure the Tomlinson’s and Goldstein’s are tradeable when teams know they are superfluous which is AFTER the preseason and into the first few rounds and then close that ‘trade deadline’ for the season.

I understand the desire for a mid-season period but I think it is too disruptive and will be under utilised that far into a season where teams IP is tantamount to state secrets.

I like this. You can add mid season draft pick swap too. Keeps an extra eye on the second grade AFL players and move up to target a player.

This is the only version I'd come close to considering. Similar to the NFL.

I think a mid-season trade is supported by some elements of the media as they think it will be good for the marketing of the game. I disagree with this view. Supporters, particularly children, want to identify with all the players in their team. Losing one to another club during the season will harm that relationship.

As an example, it has been suggested that one of the the Big Bash's biggest problems is that player movement between teams prevents supporters from forming lasting associations with the individual teams.

No, it wasn't 'Hi Ho' - he changed clubs during the off season.

It's bugging me now.  I just looked up Russell Greene and Michael Byrne and it wasn't them either.

No. Fuschini definitely changed Clubs Mid Season

Sorry SWYL, but that's not the case.

Foschini was aged just 17 in 1981 when he kicked three goals on his league debut for South Melbourne against Hawthorn and finished the season with 37 goals. The club relocated to Sydney the following year and Foschini, again playing as a forward, kicked 42 goals.

Despite his success he was unhappy in Sydney and decided to return to his home state of Victoria in 1983, joining St Kilda. He however had not received a clearance to sign with St Kilda and as a result the issue went to court. In what was a high-profile case at the time, Foschini argued that the VFL's clearance rules breached restraint of trade laws. He won the case and was allowed to play for St Kilda, in doing so helping to abolish the zoning system from the league.

We have a mid season draft.  A club can put a player on the Long-term injury list to create a list spot.

Can't see the need to have mid season player trades as well.

Also, as Beveridge says an AFL season is like a war of attrition and lists need to be managed accordingly.

No way. Look at the NBA's mid-season trade period where the star players play musical chairs in search of a playoff ring, often leaving their team high and dry. The NBA is more mature thsn the AFL and the mid-season trade sucks there. I can't see that it would be that different in the AFL.

While I will always follow the Demons no matter who comes or goes, a few changes at the end of the year is acceptable! While disappointing to lose a player like Hunt who I liked you bring in a couple of others Grundy and Hunter but the fabric of the team feels the same!

Agree the whole mid season changes of NBA is crappy, would be really [censored] to see the Pies bring in a gun ruck, key back and forward mid-year then lose to them in a GF in a close game!
