I expect players to impact the game. Spargo's impact on games is negligible. Low possession numbers and goals, and disappears for long periods during the game. His fanboys hang their hats on his 25 metre centring passes once or twice a game. He's a one trick pony.

As for his defensive side, I don't see him running down or pressuring opponents like other small forwards.

Chandler has far more strings to his bow, and both he and Bedford should have been given more opportunities ahead of Spargo last year.

Spargo's highest finish in the BnF is 13th, and I'm supposed to believe that he's critical to the team.

I just don't get the Spargo hype on here.

Thanks for confirming my post!

I'm sorry, DNIMD, but can we please stop rubbishing out two excellent forward flankers/pockets? Judging them on how many goals they kick is just old fashioned (although it's great when they do score majors). Nibbler, in particular, and Spargs cover almost as much ground as Lingers and the new winger. They are always helping out down back. If you are looking for a marginal forward to drop, cast your gaze to Melky. 34pc ToG but not a single tackle and 1 goal (after it was all over). Spargs 63pc ToG, 2 goals, 2 tackles. Nibbler, 73pc ToG, 2 tackles, 1 goal (and 308 metres gained!). There are other factors that I can't easily find (pressure acts, metres covered) or cannot be readily put into statistics, but the small forwards are there to pressure the opposition as well as score goals. I don't know how Nibbler became a whipping boy, but I wish it would stop.  Besides, won't Kozzie come in more as a mid-fielder, pointing the dropping stick more at JJ?

Yep, Spargs and ANB have to stay. Their workrate is enormous and oppositions know they can cover the ground to compete in many on-field locations before the oppo-kick is delivered. Melk cannot do that. Other smalls can, but Melk doesn't. Just the same, I regard Melk as a good choice for tactical sub - for other reasons - but not this week against the Eagles.

As long as we don’t go into the game expecting it to be easy and this putting in a half-arsed performance , we should be able to win by a very large margin.

I know we have a different team now however I don't ever remember the MFC winning by a " very large margin" hardtack.

ANB was told to look elsewhere after 2020, and had no takers. He was woeful at times last year, but the selectors stuck fat.

And I'm sure you said the exact words about TMac last week, and how important he was to the side. And you also said that JVR was not ready to fill his role. The match committee disagreed.

If you think that Spargo's 2022 output of 12 goals from 25 games is satisfactory for a small forward, then fine. He started well last week then went missing when the Swans got back in the game. Chandler on the other hand kicked a crucial goal that swung the tide.

Goody has stated that things needed to change with our forward set-up. Kozzie and Fritsch were are only impact forwards last year. Adding Chandler and JVR gives us a couple more.

ANB has been good this year, but JJ showed some real X factor as well as grunt. It would be criminal if he was dropped or made sub. Spargo goes missing for long periods of the game. The likes of Spargo and ANB are expendable.

There must be two Spargos and two  ANBs coz the ones I watched on Sunday were outstanding.

Didn’t sound like TMac will come in. I reckon they want to keep Petty forward for a bit longer.

And so they should - Petty has the ear-markings of a great swingman - the opportunity may well elevate his confidence.

I saw the gala on TV ... the standard has really dropped. Although Luke Heggie was pretty funny, so I'll probably see him. (Hopefully he can sustain the standard for a one hour show.)

I went to Comedy Bites at Capitol Theatre a couple of weeks ago. Oh dear!!

I've booked to see Kitty Flanagan. Her standup is really good. (I've seen her a couple of times.) FWIW I don't rate her TV show Fisk though.

And Sarah Pascoe is usually pretty good.

Yeah nice, I've seen Kitty live before as well. Really good.

Reckon I'll just pick a random I've never heard before.

Hibbo pulled up? Wow

It’ll be Pickett for Brown. Petty will remain forward and I reckon Tomlinson will be sub.
They will obviously not drop Rivers or Chandler and I’ll burn the joint down if JJ gets the chop.

Goodwin specifically spoke about not wanting to go too small and being wary of ruck relief (if Grundy off field, you only have one tall in the forward line) wouldn’t surprise me if Petty goes back, Hibbo misses out and Pickett comes in for Hibbo with McDonald coming in for Brown - but that could be just something Goodwin said during his presser today and goes ina different direction…we’ll find out tomorrow!

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
