I’ve told this story here before but that doesn’t stop me from telling it again, amirite?!  Heads up, it’s a long one.

I chose the Dees as a 7yo within months of emigrating to Australia. And that was as one of eight siblings, the other seven of whom had adopted Carlton, the team for them to the death  (and still is).

The first time I saw Melbourne play was vs. Carlton, of course, and I don’t quite know why but I was instantly drawn to this team. They caught my eye, and before long, my heart. But I didn’t tell a soul. I especially couldn’t tell my brothers, in particular my eldest brother with whom I was extremely close. I knew it would break his old dark navy blue heart to discover that my heart was beating true for the red and the blue. So for a couple of decades I masqueraded as a Blues devotee. I only got to watch the Dees twice a year when they (we?) played the Blues.

My older brothers took me to every single Carlton H&A match, countless finals and three grand finals (all Carlton). I wore a duffel coat with Bruce (11) Doull, I had Carlton posters on my bedroom wall, I went to training and met the players, all those things a proper diehard does.

This continued until August 2000 when my brother tragically died, at which time I “came out” as a Dees supporter. One of my brothers to this day doesn’t talk to me because of this. With hindsight I guess it was a bit insensitive that I adorned my house in red and blue leading up to the 2000 GF.  I came home one day and he’d left a note on my (red and blue) front door which said something to the effect of “His body isn’t even cold yet, and you’ve tarted up your house in those revolting colours like a circus tent.”

Anyways that might explain why I’m so overtly (and loudly and proudly) passionate and devoted to our Club. The dam walls had burst and I could finally adore them with unbridled passion and now there’s no stopping it. 😁

PS: Told you it was a long story 😉

PPS: I lied. We went to every H&A match EXCEPT for Windy Hill because feral Ess thugs + small child = potential bodily harm, or worse. 😬

Quite the tale!  I am so sorry to hear about your brother, and then the subsequent family [censored].   Believe it or not I was 7 when I immigrated to australia (what can I say, I just had enough of my parents and needed a new start). I literally read a magazine on the 747 and there was an article on Jimmy and Sean Wight.  I figured there was only one team in Melbourne so obviously I would support them! First game I watched in full was the 88 GF. First game when i started to love footy was the 89 GF.  Sorry my tale is not quite as romantic

What is it about Dublin that sees 7yos bailing on their parents and making their way to Australia?! 😁

Your story is great Dub, if for no other reason than you were reading a magazine at the age of seven. 🤩

I remember now. I once chased down and tackled the hottest young property in our league.

Also took a spectacular one-handed grab not just once but twice. People said ooh-ahh.

I also once kicked the ball into my former best friend's head and scored off the rebound.

He was like Lenny Hayes. Once kicked and marked his own ball. Umps didn't what to do.

See this? We all should take note. You dig deep enough and the memories of the times you excelled rise to the top. Keep doing this and in time they’ll be at the forefront of your mind, obscuring the memories of the times you messed up.

PS: “People said ooh ahh” ??!!  And you’re a writer. Okaaay.

I need time to get used to Skort, I did like Skuit.

Multiple choice question as to where the username skort comes from:

When your team scores a goal, but in a really clumsy way, and you're still a little unhappy about it. Sure we skort, but . . .

A northern Swedish snack traditionally eaten at around at around 11am or sunrise which doesn't contain real meatballs.

A portmanteau of Scott and rort: we just skorted an extra car park in our wealthy, marginally held seat. Yay us.

A shortening of escort, when it's not the fun ones. e.g. the bouncer who drags you out of a club by your collar.

All I can say is Jibroni is nothing to do with following the MFC. Maybe it is time for a change.

I reckon it's good to have a few non Dees related usernames to balance these out so you should keep Jibroni!

E.g mine has nothing to do with the Dees but was a throwaway line I overheard a posh guy say about him getting sunburnt.

I was there the day the "chippy" caught fire. Pity it didn't spread to the rest of their stands without Melbourne supporters sitting in them of course.

Now that trade month is dusted and we need to wait us a few more weeks for some further hope cookies, I thought it might be the opportune time to start a new thread on something that has occupied my mind for the past six or so minutes. Usernames.

Q1: have you misinterpreted other posters' usernames without reflection?

(Follow up Q2: where and why and what and who did you derive your username from?)

I’ll get the ball gently rolling. (First easy question though: do any of the many ‘Dr.s’ on Demonland hold a PhD. or practice medicine?)

More specifically, on reflection.

Nasher: always thought it was something to do with being an admin and gnashing teeth, but probably just someone having the surname Nash.

Cassiew: read it as someone who considers themselves a nut, as in cashew. But likewise probably just a person named Cassandra, whose surname starts with ‘w’.

Pennant St Dee: always read in my head as Pennant ‘Saint’ Dee. Pretty obviously refers to a street though, somewhere in Perth likely. Google says such a thing exists.

mo64: A dude named Moe or referring to modus operandi 1964’?

DubDee/Sydee/Edm. Is it music related? Always picture you all in the different rooms of a rave.

binman: still can’t help but connect with the strident support of Oscar McDonald, as in Oscar the Grouch = bin-man. Name probably came about well before OMac ever walked into our club.

Demonstone? Is this Demon-stone like something out of Game of Thrones, or Demon’s tone where he or she forgot the apostrophe?

DeeSpencer: just assume is a huge fan of Jake Spencer like me.

My username is the same one I use for every website that requires one. Those with any botanical knowledge will recognise that it is a genus of Australian native plant in the heath family Ericaceae, reflecting one of my long held passions: native flora.

Incidentally, the Latin translation means "white beard", which has become quite appropriate as I near the half century in age.

I will say, if anyone knows the meaning of my user name and where the band got the word from (without googling!) I’d be very very impressed.

I didn’t Google but I’m with a fairly nerdy friend rn and he says it’s from Lord of the Rings (?)

    GAMEDAY: Rd 12 vs Carlton

The Blues season is on the line and their captain and coach have been in the firing line all week. If the Dees cough this one up the media's crosshairs will do a 180 and will surely be directed at the Demons who have only won 13 games from their last 25 outings. This is a must win game for the Melbourne Football Club too.

WRITING ON THE WALL by Whispering Jack

The Narrm Football Club found a second way in the space of 12 months less a day to unexpectedly lose a home game against Walyalup on Saturday afternoon. The equivalent match of last year has been described as Melbourne’s “ground zero” of 2022 where things went wrong for the club after a long run of wins that included its 57 year drought-breaking premiership triumph. Unfortunately for the Demons, the 2023 version was a case of deja vu with the Dockers overcoming a half time deficit and runn

The Casey Demons were dealt a crushing blow to their hopes of repeating last year’s premiership glory when they capitulated to the Werribee Tigers in the final term of what was for the first three quarters a riveting game of football. The Demons struck early with the opening two goals of the match but the Tigers fought back to level the scores by mid-term. From there on until the middle of the last quarter, there was never more than two goals separating the teams although the home side look
