It's not low cost though, he's apparently on 500k.

That's too much. Prefer $350k to $400k

We lost Mitch Brown, and Bruce is an upgrade on him. It’s that’s simple. He might come good and play in a premiership, or he might play a few cameos along the way that help us protect JVR and the like.

Think of him as a coverage player and it makes a lot of sense.

I’ve seen a lot of we lost Mitch Brown but he played 4 games in the last 2 years, all one off cameos. And JVR is now ready as the 3rd key forward behind Ben and Tom.

Weid is 3rd ruck as well as 4th key forward so in theory could be stuck trying to be 2 places at once but the hope would be one of Gawn/Grundy are available for most of the year.

Melk’s also staying on as emergency 5th key forward.

That’s all without Petty forward or something more out of the box like Howes as a hit up tall.

My point is I don’t think we actually need more depth for depths sake unless we think McDonald and Brown are in serious strife and/or we think Bruce is quick fix fitness wise and an upgrade. Maybe he is?!

I'm ok with it. he gives us another forward option which we lacked last year.

So we going  in with BB,Tmac and  Bruce all chronically injured and JVR who hasn't played a game

Bordering on incompetence by the club in my view

The way I see it Tom Mc missed half this year with an injury that’s very hard to recover from, and Brown is playing on borrowed time, and ideally for his and the clubs sake he plays 14-16 games a year - giving him time to recover. JVR isn’t ready to play consistently week in week out on bigger blokes. Weid can’t do it at the AFL  level.

So if either Brown (with dud knees) or McDonald (with a dud foot) are injured we are left with not much. We know this because we saw it throughout the last 12 weeks of 2022. If Josh Bruce is half as good in 2023 as he was in 21 we’ll kick 20-25 more goals for the year, and win at least 3 more games than we did this year.

He’s the best forward option linked to us this year that I’ve heard.

Bruce is ‘chronically injured’ in the same way Lever, Gawn and Petracca are - he did his knee once.

Some posters love a whinge about players being ‘chronically’ injured simply because they were injured in 2022.

Surely there are other medium term options than Bruce with a knee recovery part completed

Are there? I keep waiting for names to appear. A bird in the hand….

What would you propose they do differently. Who else is available? Would you not take the moneyball option to give us a few percent extra in an area we need it. It’s not like we had the pick of all key forwards in the comp and landed on Bruce. There is reality to deal with when trading unfortunately.

He isn't anywhere near the hand

My main point isn't about Bruce its about the club  ending up with poor options hoping BB and Tmac recover

We have had a need for a KPF for 3 years and have done nothing about developing trading or drafting one

He signed a 4 year deal with the Dogs at the end of 2019 after crossing from St Kilda.

So hopefully we are just taking him on his last year and then assess at end of 23.

I have no issue with that for one year, as we save a year on Tomlinson and get an experienced key forward for cover.

Hopefully all working to a plan, to dump salary for next year's swoop on a player.

What salary dump ? Is Bruce playing for free?

But if we only take him for his last year, we save $500k on Tomlinson in 24.

If we are looking at bringing in a good player that will help.

In the meantime he is cover for 2 injured forwards and experience and big body to help a raw kid.

For one year it is smart.

The players you mentioned did their knee in their teens/early 20's. I'm not saying that Bruce is chronically injured, but history tells you that it's less likely that an older player will return to the same level of mobility/agility.

Based on your logic, we don't need Bruce because T Mac and BBB will be just fine.

Has the medical at the MFC been confirmed anywhere?

Tomlinson has 2 years at $500k and Bruce has 1 year.

So we save the last year of Tomlinson at $500k for use in 24.

We tried to get rid of Tomlinson with no takers.

We now have in his last year by swapping him with Bruce.

If Bruce plays the whole year at Casey, we are $500k better off in 2024.

Who?

Bruce played at the end of this year, so what is the part completed knee recovery?

Yes played but was clearly hampered probably needs more time to get back to his best

Anyway we have enough crocks on the list in my view

Pass please

Melb supporters - We need a key forward, player get a key forward.

Melb list managers - We are looking at Josh Bruce

Melb supporters -  Josh Bruce is rubbish, he had a knee injury and is going to to his 4th.  Why are we looking at this bloke

The way I see it Tomlinson appeared more likely than not to continue in the two’s. So if he is moved on and replaced by JB who also plays in the two’s, it at worst is a net neutral outcome. (Aside from a back being replaced by a forward).

However, if he comes good in the two’s, there could be some real upside,  if and when we may need some ‘forward power’ options.

Chances of this occurring? Pretty high.  Aside from JVR being a cleanskin with plenty of potential, both BBB and McDonald who were quite banged up last year appear to be no guarantee that they will make it all the way through next year. We then have another option to consider.

If it happens that JB comes our way for 2023, am I excited? No, but I would get it.

He is also that ruck depth for one year, behind, Max, Grundy and Weid.
