Heard the whole interview live, was definitely more about having a club interested in taking him - likely with some kind of assurance he'll be considered first 22. 5 1 Quote

rjay 25,424 Posted October 6, 2022 Posted October 6, 2022 Tomo is an almost footballer. Looks great when allowed to play his game, nice neat kicking action on show at VFL level but not consistent at AFL level. Plus comes unstuck when the pressure is on. He just seems to drift through games, no sense of urgency. I reckon he's done well to last this long at an AFL club and can't see why another club would come knocking. I could never understand our interest. We had shown no interest for a few years there then all of a sudden we had this failed idea of him being a wingman. If he wants to play best 22 then he better start getting down and dirty....looks like it will be with us. 3 Quote

He's had a lasting career doing just that. 1 Quote

If that was the case, other clubs would be chasing him big time. Tim Lamb came out and said that we are well covered in that area. In other words, Tomlinson is down the pecking order. There was a reason why he didn't finish top 10 in the Casey BnF, and other defenders Buntine and Ellison did. Tomlinson quite often got caught in no mans land when the opposition won a contested possession and kicked long. And he's not a good one-on-one defender either. His stat line would look good because he took the kick-outs and played on, and also would get a lot of handball receives. Would love to see another club take him off our hands, but I fear he'll be a list clogger on good money for the next 2 years. 2 1 Quote
Chelly 858 Posted October 6, 2022 Posted October 6, 2022 Frankly, this thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Tommo doesn't seem to have any suitors and he's a contracted player so unless there's evidence of actual outside interest, he stays. End of story. 1 Quote

He is in the sights because of his wage not because ‘he is down the order’; we can’t have $500k playing at Casey. He did his ACL last year and was great as a gorilla tamer. He can do that again for us if they want to play Petty forward. Or they can back Turner and save his wage, but I still think he can play a role at AFL level in a good team in the backline. 3 Quote

He was a good wingman/utility at GWS, especially in that mid 10’s period when every team was attempting a kick/mark game plan like Hawthorn. Run was more important than pace. Richmond put a lot more speed on the ball and Tomlinson became less desirable. He was shown up big time in the ‘19 finals and it was a poor decision for us to think we could keep his wing career alive. He did a good job as a key defender, but it was a small sample size in a winning side. He actually got beaten badly in the preseason game against the dogs which was our only loss he played in. He should be better this year with more recovery time, but only as more acceptable depth. I hope they’re doing a lot of gymnastics and other agility training with him. 1 Quote

Demonstone 23,553 Posted October 6, 2022 Posted October 6, 2022 Tommo was originally a top ten draft selection, which is more fodder for those who think draft picks are over-rated and further evidence that there is no certainty with any player that is drafted at the pointy end. 1 Quote

His stat line would look good because he took the kick-outs and played on, and also would get a lot of handball receives. To be fair, he played 14 games for Casey, half of which were when he was clearly still getting his knee and fitness back. Buntine played 16, Ellison 20, and neither are key defenders; which is usually a harder position to win votes in. And just to add - he was number 1 in the AFL for defensive one on ones before he did his knee so I disagree he's not a good one on one defender. Edited October 6, 2022 by Lord Nev 2 Quote

Can confirm that the knee was nowhere near 100% when he returned, and heavily impacted his form this season. Don't be surprised if he comes back after a full preseason looking more like early 2021 Thommo. 4 Quote

If he managed to pull a ANB/TMac and come back and win his spot back it could be a very different look forward with Petty, JVR and a fully fit Gawn all potentially forward. 1 Quote
