He was a pick 3 originally.

We live in an odd world where quality players in the system for 30-50 games of development are worth less than they were 3 years ago even thought they’ve still got 10-12 years of footy to play.

Something needs to change as it’s not at all reflecting the equalisation processes of the AFL.

Its seriously like buying a new PC or laptop. The technology is apparently obsolete by the time you bring it home from the store.

I knew there'd be one. AJ's career was almost finished by the time the Eagles entered the competition, so no real go home factor.

Alan Johnson’s performance in the ‘87 Elimination Final against the Eagles. In their very first final and our first final since ‘64 was described by coach John Northey as “Magnificent”. Justifiably so.

For those DL’s of a certain vintage most certainly an unforgettable almost legendary time with some great individual and team performances. Despite being derided as ‘ordinary’ and participating in that season’s final series by ‘default’.

GWS have a strong draft hand. No doubt Vic clubs will be picking them all off in a few years.

I'd be tempted to buck our trend of trading future firsts into the current draft and save the currency for Finn Callaghan who's out of contract next year. GWS are going to continue to bleed players, time for us to cash in.

It’s nice of GWS to continue to offer to incubate players for other clubs. Can they develop a key defender for when May retires.

Johnson was unstoppable in that game. One of my earliest memories along with the Lyon winning goal. That was some rivalry!

Someone missed a chance to pinch it for the Eagles late but their name escapes me.

If Ned Guy is involved likely outcome is Pies paying part of Jack Bowes contract,

I was in the pocket next to the point post with my brother and watched Wrensted run into an open goal only to miss, Sheesh I enjoyed 87 and 88 a lot. Heartbreak and all!

This Bowes trade really annoys me. This one isn't just a case of a local boy wanting to go home and taking unders to go to a media darling 'well run club'. This is a player that comes with a salary dump and is going to the one club that should not be able to afford it given its recent big signings and other players being brought in this year. Something stinks and eventually someone will talk. There is no way in my mind they are not cheating the salary cap and I've thought this for a number of years, but if they of all clubs can absorb the salary dump then something is rotten in Denmark!! How there is not more media questioning and scrutiny is beyond me.

Are you suggesting all of those farms, properties and businesses obtained by Cats players are outside the salary cap?

Surely not. People just love Geelong.

A lot of players (and their partners) on rural properties there seem to be gifted a new Toyota Landcruiser every few months as well.

Sadly, nothing will ever be done, and they'll remain a very successful club for a long time.

Bet you they don’t get 40% off New balance runners though!

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
