PODCAST: Rd 13 vs Collingwood

I think we need to discuss the top 3 concerns and urgent fixes this team needs.

In my view:

A) Major overhaul of the fwd line and structure. Need a new approach to how we want to attack, maybe kick more and think less (see ANB or Harmes forcing kicks to teammates even when there is an open goal). I much prefer behinds than turnovers on that side of the ground.

B) Mid-field struggles, clearly there are a couple of players not at the level from last year. Brayshaw to play more as inside midfielder?

C) May-dependence. We need to find a way to keep our defensive strength even when someone like May, or Petty for that matter, is out.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts on these points.

Match of the round this week I reckon. Andyโ€™s MFCSS vs. binmanโ€™s calm optimism. Surely gonna test Georgeโ€™s mettle to sit somewhere in between, albeit with some expected queries over ANBโ€™s position in the team ๐Ÿ˜‰. Canโ€™t wait!ย

@binman A perfect storm of loading, an unsettled side and punch ons in french restaurants has appeared to beleaguer the club.ย  Did you notice in the third quarter we seemed to really want to ice the clock (short passes)? I also noticed that Gawn was warming up on the bench toward the end of the third term, but then as we managed to hold the pies at that point he went back to sitting on the bench.ย  Would it be a fair observation to say that we were trying to hold Collingwood in that 3rd quarter for a last roll of the dice in the last?

Loading, loading, loading.ย  We have a hard run home, hopefully this calculated program pays off

I'm not convinced that loading is the issue.

Here's where I am on the MFCSS scale.

ย

I did, in large because two of my mates who I was sitting wirh were screaming at us to move rhe ball all quarter!

I definitely think we were looking to slow rhe game down and hold the pies.

But my theory is they did so, not so much to conserve energy for an assault in the last, but to conserve energy full stop.

By that I mean, you could see they were gassed.

It doesn't actually matter what the cause was, their fatigue could not be more obvious (tracc was totally gassed for instance and had no power at all in terms of bursting from stoppages).

And equally you could see that the pies were less fatigued.ย

So I reckon the dees were trying to take the speed completely out of the game as that was the best way to stay in the contest.

The pies eventually got control of the tempo and put speed on tbe ball. And, just like freo and the swans, ran over the top of us.

Again, leaving aside the cause (because lthe idea of loading seems to be very triggering for some people) it was as clear as day that we simply couldn't go with them.

ย

Yup trying to conserve full stop.ย  At the ground it's very obvious in the last 3 games that we have been running on the spot in the second half.ย  And it triggers a knock on that affects everything we are trying do.

Petracca has looked gassed for a while, he must be carrying something, last year no one could stop him with a tackle, he's getting caught all the time now.ย

An interesting month ahead.

Well you could be right, last season was a very long one, and while we breezed through our finals, by all reports we trained HARD in those six weeks in Adelaide/Perth.ย  We could just be out of puff.ย  Time will tell.

The effect of having an unsettled side is underestimated.ย  The ins/outs this year is no comparison to last year.ย  It's quite extraordinary that we got to 10-0.

I would love to see @binmanproved right, at the end of the season - I really enjoy this calm analysis, although canโ€™t 100% buy into it yet (like @DemonlandI still have a touch of the MFCSS). However, if they did end up tapering and producing the stuff we saw last year it would be effing glorious!

For me, the reason for my partial MFCSS return is that I was looking forward to seeing a season full of the football we witnessed at the end of last year, which we now know is unrealistic. What do the lads think about the Burgo Effect? Iโ€™m sure Selwyn is a great replacement, but Burgo seemed to be like an extra coach: I wonder if theyโ€™re missing that element?

Looking forward to hearing the podcast.ย

Burgo was a fixture on the bench, a step down from Goodwin. You would see him all game pulling the strings. I'm not sure I'd be able to pick Selwyn out of a line up. I'm not poo pooing his job but the jury will be out until this "loading" period is over.

Burgo had the luxury of a largely uninterrupted injury run. Makes all the difference. The injuries we are getting arenโ€™t the fitness guys fault. They are joints and knocks etc. They are the law of averages coming back around. I was hoping the great law of averages man in the sky would give us a few extra years before coming for us.

I did some reseaarch this afternoon about previous premiers.ย  Apart from Hawthorn in 2015, and ignoring 2020 which was so impacted by COVID, all other sides since 2014 have perfromed worse in the middle of the season compared to the rest.ย  Melbourne 2021 had the biggest drop off, Richmond 2017 close behind.

I was surprised that Melbourne last year was the most dominate season in that time.ย  It's more than possible to win premierships while also losing 6 or 7 games during the home and away season.

Love the pod. Never remember to listen to it live might do it tonight!

A few points I'd like to raise.

ย

The Backline.

Hibberd's first game back was incredibly underrated (no media attention at all), he may have made one bad clanger, but other than that, it was like he hasn't missed a beat, along with Brayshaw and a gutsy Petty (earning alot of respect at the moment playing banged up) we would have lost by 10 goals without those three.

However with May back next week I would argue that now is the time to move Brayshaw back to the wing the problem with that is that Jordan has taken the wing role given to him really well, could Jordan play a Half Forward role?ย

IMO Brayshaw's kicking into the F50 would definitely help us going in.

The Forward Line

We need a pack crunching Key Forward. I lost faith in the Weid last year, but what other options do we have? Does Van Rooyen even though he is young come in and just get the licence to LEAD & FLY at the packs? The way he plays reminds me of a young Hogan (not as clinical) but just as brave.

Bedford has to come in at the expense of one Spargo or ANB, neither one of them is applying enough pressure at the moment, get a kid in who is dog hungry to run chase tackle and from what I've seen take his chances!

Also going forward, when Joel Smith comes back from injury can he go forward like he was being tried back in 2019 in Brisbane in that practice match he kicked 6-7 as we run him into the ground.

The R๐ŸคฏCK!

Majak was picked up as insurance. Can he come in and play a Jackson like role while Jackson takes on the #1 Ruck role?ย

This is A++ research.

Have taken screenshots of all the "supporters" who have [censored] their pants during this period. Cant wait to call them out, when they get positive again towards the end of the year.ย

Great discussion, guys. And thank you for explaining those graphs that have been posted of late. I now fully understand what they signify.ย
Thereโ€™s only one issue, a very minor issueโ€ฆ @binman, the โ€œtโ€ in โ€œoftenโ€ is called a โ€œsilent tโ€ for a reason. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

I think both are acceptable aren't they? I had an Oxford dictionary once that had both pronunciations.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourneโ€™s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time atย Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: โ€œIs Melbourne even at the ground?โ€ Moments later, as Carltonโ€™s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demonsโ€™ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.ย
