Thanks WW what a great pickup with the two Robert’s together, very poignant now. 1985, we were living in Wantirna South with a 4 and 1 Yo.

A ripper from Kings Birthday in 1990 when there were less umpires and they didn't have such a great influence on the outcome :)

Immediately after this game - "what number do you want on your jumper?" "54 please".

Nobody thought to tell me that either Heaver would get a new number or never be heard from again.

He basically confirmed it won't be the 64 GF (or 62, 63 either) 😭

Shattered, was hoping for a miracle

He posted the second half of the 64 GF the other day:

Saturday is the 40th anniversary of Leigh Matthews giving Neville Bruns a busted jaw behind the play. Amazing vision on YouTube; Matthews himself ends up staggering off the field with a bloodied face and helped by trainers after the subsequent melée. Apparently it was 20yo Steve Hocking who took on the role of equalizer. Lethal was charged by police, deregistered as a player for 4 weeks by the then VFL, but still managed to get amongst the goals in his final 9 games, including bags of 6 and 4.

That was a dreadful day, not unlike the John Greening king-hit in early 70s. These days AFL have codified king-hitting in the guise of CTE-inducing "football acts" where any player on the ground can get his head pounded at any time.

I remember the TV commentators at that game being adamant that it was the unhinged, reckless, aggressive actions of Mark Jackson (playing for Geelong at that stage and whacking opponents) that fuelled bad feelings and precipitated further violence which culminated in the Matthews/Bruns disgrace.

Only the press would find a way to blame Jacko for Matthew’s appalling brutal behaviour.

The commentators weren't blaming Jackson for what Matthews did.

Nothing excuses Matthews' actions, but Jacko's role in creating the violent mayhem and ill feeling that existed that day provides some context.

inaccurate kicking even in the 80s! But this time by the oppo rather than us!

it's one thing to lose to The Filth last Monday by a point after out-everything them (except their half-backs sprinting away from our forwards).

But according to Tony Jones and Des Tuddenham in this report, The Filth must have won the '64 flag by three goals, instead of losing by four points.

That's according to Tuddy as he kicked four in the following TV report.

Only problem Tuddy - "yeah, I think (I kicked) four (goals)" - the records show you kicked only one goal.

Hmmm.

Top journalism that Tony!

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
