It's a bit stiff when you have played 9 games, never lost, had 2 rising star nominations, won a premiership and they start you on the bench.

My advice:-   wait till Game day !!!

No surprises which is a good thing.

But, Jake Melksham getting named emergency is genuinely taking the [censored] right?

His VFL performance last week was woeful. Absolutely cooked.

I am sure that Goody would justify saying Melksham played well because he ‘played his role effectively’. Lord knows what his role was though! It must be like ASIO trying to work that out!

Because, Goody rarely makes changes (except injury related ones) to a team coming off a win.

So, if we win this week and lets say Tmac or Spargo have quiet games statistically, can repeat offenders please consider resisting  the urge to suggest they will be dropped.

A large portion of posts in the changes thread aren't always clear on whether they are predictions or personal preferences. There's a difference between posters suggesting certain players will be dropped or should be dropped. Taking TMac's form for example, there's a reasonable question as to whether someone else might contribute more to the team right now and into the future. Historically, the selection panel has been about four to five weeks behind general Demonland sentiment on players out of form and calls for demotion. I like that. They are not as reactionary as most on here, and give players a chance to find form. But this forum is pretty good at recognising where the winds are blowing.

Most D/landers do not always take into account conditions or "players playing their role " when calling for change.

It was a game played in slippery conditions with a ground that had a lot of water that week.

No forward ( or defender other than our great Stephan May ) looked like getting votes off the mids and rucks. That surely indicates mostly small cameos or the also anomaly of the smallest ( and smartest and whatever other accolades you are able to throw around) player in Bowser got votes either.

In a way  it was a pretty good slog between two sides having a go and providing some high class mid field dominance and when we turned for  home at orange time our "rider" declared that the whip was not to be used to extend our percentage.

A Very good in racing terms "jump out" for our boys with the conditions especially against taller key position players who depend upon marking first their game. How many times did Maxy or Tmac get hands on the ball only for  it to drop to the ground?

Stats are every thing to some D/Lers and no matter what are always king. But Goody and Co are too smart for that trick and don't pull the lever for team and role players if they feel that circumstances considered justify no changes. There is an opposition and again has any player been totally out if his class in two Rounds yet?  Hunts game vs Dogs  on Weightmann was good so one poorer game does not mean changes to an already unsettled ( but playing near to its best considering availability) defence with a 70 pts average in 2 games following just 60 plus ( best since our '56 backline) or similar in 2021.

Now  that Casey are up and running we also get some reliable form to compare.

Boy I can predict  what will be the D/L call if Mitch Brown gets another 7?

Tmac will need at least 3 or 4 to hold him off!  And Hunty a few dashes with great disposal won't be unnoticed!!

While it takes a lot for Goodwin & co to change a winning team, I'm a little surprised there are no changes.

Petracca, Brayshaw, Rivers and Spargo took some big hits last week.  Rivers was heavily bandaged last week and Petracca was at training on Monday.

We are coming off a 6 day break from an interstate trip and we play Port next week with an interstate trip on a 6 day break.  (Before anyone complains just be aware that they bookended with 10 and 9 day breaks).

I read in another thread that we had a light training week.  So, wouldn't be surprised if we closely manage playing time especially for those above to preserve them for next week.

Or could we make a late change?

One thing is for sure if we get a good lead we will shut down the game pretty quickly and defend.  We only need the 4 pts and keep injuries to a minimum

I would suggest it's worth keeping in mind Burgo's philosophy (which is also Selwyn's I assume). That is to create endurance and resilience in players by playing through stiffness, soreness etc. If you haven't, I can highly recommend listening to the Brukkie and Burgo podcast after the GF in which he goes into it.

I heard that podcast.  It was very insightful.

The bandaging and the heavy knocks to the players I mentioned (btw meant to say Bowey not Spargo) looked more than 'stiffness and soreness'.  My comment was in the context of back to back i/state trips, simultaneously with back to back 6 day breaks.

Surely Mitch Brown replaces Weideman in list of emergencies?? Surely great form needs to be rewarded??

Can Mitch Brown ruck? I am in no doubt that Weideman is an emergency in case we need to replace a ruckman at the last minute.

I hope Bedford is the sub again, but unless he's needed to cover injuries, I expect Melksham to get three more games as sub during the year to allow him to achieve a 200-game career before he retires. It's essentially a similar strategy to what we did with Jones last year to get him to 300 games.

Ben Brown rarely rucks as we have two in the side already and they both play a fair bit of their time forward also which covers that aspect most of time.

T-Mac usually takes more (rare) ruck duties than BB when he is played forward also.

Mitch should have been the auto call up for BB after kicking 7.  Astonished they gave Weid the nod....he did very little (on comparison to Mitch) in the VFL from what i witnessed.  Mitch showed he was more than ready and looked to be marking everything.  Goal accuracy right up there also vs Weid who is usually sub par on the big stage.

As a matter of interest, does the player replacing someone out due to the Covid rules have to come from the four named emergencies?

I realise that M Brown has been added to the squad and could still replace Weideman (or anyone else) tonight.

Will pin this post to see what happens on Wednesday night selection.

My feeling is that T-mac will be dropped for Brown and Weid stays in because he PERFORMED.

Binman, I suggest you stop talking about the Mcdonalds, you seem to curse them!

Another bog ordinary performance from him.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
