spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 A dominant performance by the Dees v Brisbane. Saw it live and really liked our ball movement. Most of the stats had the Lions even or ahead. But it’s deceiving because our ball movement and scoring/goal kicking was rewarding our play. The forward line looked open and dangerous. No packs, congested contest forward line footy. what I loved … Kicks 216 handballs 119 yes we ran and kicked and hit targets. It was noticeable and great to see the little useless handballing to stationary players was virtually non existent. The run was back. Some special mentions. Clarry. 18 kicks (12 handballs) metres gained 578 . Brayshaw(18k9hb) Hunt (15k3hb), May (16k4hb) and Fritsch (13k. Zero handballs ). Trac also was kicking it more, and not always looking for the handball option. May our “football” continue into September. Go Dees. 1 2 Quote

The kick/handball differential is of course heavily influenced by the pressure applied by opponents. Last night, Brisbane's pressure on the ball carrier was often low or non-existent. Compare the manic pressure applied by Collingwood two weeks ago. The run was back alright, but it's a lot easier to run when no one's chasing you. But it was a pleasure watching our boys hit targets time and time again as the Lions supporters around me became more and more frustrated with their team's woeful execution. 3 Quote

Demon Dynasty 17,165 Posted September 3, 2022 Author Posted September 3, 2022 Qualifying Final, 2022 MCG - Demons vs Swans Melbourne Demons Clarry Clarry Clarry oi oi oi! Amazing rating here and one of his best in the red & the blue and his second best for the season. Only bettered in Rnd 10 vs North with a 7.675 What a game and what a stunning result on such a big occasion. A genuine champion! Let's take a look... 24 effective disposals @ 82.8%, 3 one percenters, 8 clearances (Luke Parker the most on the night, just, with 9), 2 Rebounds, 4 inside 50s, 8 tackles (3 inside 50), 10 score involvements, 5 intercepts, 420 Meters gained, 2 goals and only 1 miserly turnover. Steven May what can you say! One of the great games by our champion FB on one of the games great forwards, Buddy Franklin. Some of his highlights on the night... 18 effective disposals @ 78.3%, 5 contested marks (most on the night), 8 one percenters (note: McCartin had a massive 17!), 11 Rebounds (most on the might) and a massive 16 intercepts (most on the night with the next best Harmes on 8). So looking at these results it was really too much left to to few with the top 5 player ratings being Clarry, May, Harmes, Petty & Sparrow. Followed by a very good (genuine forward) rating from Fritta of 2.775 .... and, let's be honest, daylight the rest! And what was that game from GUS!? I can't recall a worse rating from him since i've been compiling. Some of his lowlights included ... only 9 effectives @ 45% and a massive 11 turnovers! But he wasn't alone here... combined between them, Max (7), Viney (9) and Gus (11) clocked up a massive and disastrous outcome on the night of 27 turnovers! You won't win too many games, including H&A, with three of your best bringing such a horror performance. Obviously finals are played at a different level but our Team Rating was also significantly off. Even if it was just by a smidgen, our worst result for the season and down on our season average rating by a massive 19.5%! That's a statistical outlier sub-par performance from our boys and i have to wonder if gastro may have gotten hold of a number of players that we were unaware of and the club were just forced to soldier on?? I very much doubt we will beat the Lions if we produce anything close to last night next week. It will be lights out for season 2022. A massive turnaround ahead for this club on the track if we're to get up against the Lions and make a consecutive PF. Romey 172 Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 One curious statistic on the weekend was the 16km differential between the total team distance run (Data curtesy of the Telstra Tracker - Swans 287.5km v Dees 271.6km.) Despite the Dees having 3 of the top 4 runners on the night for every player on the field the Swans ran about 1km more than their opponent. This is usual and as there were only a handful of games in the AFL this year which had a greater differential although of these examples, the team that ran less did not always lose. 1 2 2 Quote

Demon Dynasty 17,165 Posted September 14, 2022 Author Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) Qualifying Final, 2022 MCG - Demons vs Swans Match Day Rating vs H&A 2022 Season Ratings Suspected something was seriously up after looking at the base data straight after this final a few weeks back. But never suspected things were this bad vs season averages, with a few exceptions in the first 10 players or so. Tracc's drop off explanatory but it's a massive drop. If you're a numbers/analyst looking at that you would be putting the info to the coach's/FD and highlighting surely for the next match against the Lions and asking some massive questions of physios/docs/player. As to what went wrong, who knows. Only those inside the inner sanctum or very close to someone with inside intel might have some idea. Whatever the main reason/s, things sure went belly up once we hit finals. I understand the second week a little more in the sense more players would've been banged up eg; Tracc playing injured, Clarry's head knock. But we had the bye like everyone else leading into this one. Gastro / illness issue? That might account for Hibberd's drop off but didn't hear of others catching it? Many players spent well before finals and too much spent too early in the first 10 rounds, nothing left in the tank in the 2nd half (might explain our last quarter fade outs somewhat)? Pressure from the Swans off the charts, a number of players couldn't handle it? Who knows. Have highlighted Clarry in blue as that is one hell of a performance in a final. Others that did very well statistically vs their season averages included May (superb result given his opponent), Harmes, Petty (outstanding), Sparrow, Fritta (29% above his 2021 season average and 7.5% above last year's final's average!), Spargo & Hunt. With ANB thereabouts. As mentioned previously above, the Team Rating was a massive 19% off the season's average Team Rating. Have to say i'm astounded that this appeared not to set any alarm bells off inside the FD and/or with SG! In the sense that we stuck with exactly the same line up, and much of that line up (statistically) was obviously (if you had the time to dissect) in a world of trouble. There's absolutely no way you are coming back from being off your season averages by around 30% - 40% (or greater) the following week. Certainly not within a week anyway and not enough to probably bring a level of effectiveness in the role you're expected to play, especially in the pressure cooker of a final. Had we made the Prelim...might have been a different matter. Note: A red 2022 H&A Ranking indicates that player did not hit his seasonal ranking in this Final. Some players might be higher than their seasonal ranking just by being picked. That is a player ranked 28th for example might end up being ranked 22 in this game by the mere fact that he was picked in the team. In other words the rankings need to be considered in context. Hope that makes sense.
