The last 10 mins of the third quarter brings me the same amount of joy as having my kids. I pretty much watch the replay daily from the point Daniel dumps Maxy. It will never get old.

At the time I was just wild with disbelief and awe and adrenaline. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing and there was no time to put anything into words. I think I was just muttering intensely, "We can do this".

I actually think I was still in shock from it to some extent that whole final quarter (maybe still now?). Couldn't stop thinking about it, which is a weird thing DURING a grand final!

I wasn't sure in terms of victory, but sort of felt like there couldn't be another twist. Felt a lot surer when BBB nailed the first. After that it was just a blur, a beautiful blissful blur.

What a gift. It can never be taken away from us.

Said to my daughter after Browns goal "This is it .... Game on from here."
7 and a half minutes later it was over.
At 3/4 time time I declared "Another couple quick ones and it'll be party time."

My true belief that we were going to be premiers was when ANB put us 7 goals up. I thought then even lesser Melbourne teams of the past wouldn't let this one get away.  Something that remains entrenched in my memory was Trac's look of steely determination after he kicked his magical dribbler. (Bloody hell it even went over the exact centre mark on the goal line! ) I have never seen a footballer looking so focussed and determined. The look on the guy in the crowd after this goal never fails to move me also. He looks like a lot of us were thinking. "Are we going to be premiers at last." So proud of this team, they really play for each other. The chemistry is good. Roll on 2022.

After almost 70 years closely following the VFL / AFL, and putting aside my Melbourne bias, that was without doubt the most exhilarating minute of football that I’ve ever had the good fortune to see.  Any team, any era, it wins hands down!

Still in shock, I think. A beautiful shock but it’s very surreal.

Funny but I was calm the whole game. Even 19 down I wasn’t worried. I just knew we were better than them.

That said when we got 36 points up I sent a text to a friend saying ‘[censored] me! I think we just won a premiership!’

Many of us related to the guy in the stand. He has been spoken of so often. So clearly a Dee supporter and I have wondered if he lives there or was able to travel. Brilliant image for OUR club.

I'll bet it was. I imagine it was hand knitted for him by someone he loved. I doubt there were any mass produced Demon scarves in those days.

I love this thread! I love it for the same reason I love DL. I mean, where else can one go to indulge in the immense joy that comes with a premiership, 11 weeks after the fact?! The fam humoured me for a couple of weeks after the GF but it’s worn thin since then. The other night I was watching the grannie and my youngest son - a person less interested in footy you’d struggle to meet - walked into the room. I says, “hey, great timing!” Accompanied with a huge sigh and a full 360 degree eye-roll, he says, “yes Mum, I know, ‘surely not another one’ and the red-headed guy kicks another goal.” 😁

Prior to Oliver's goal, the best goal I had seen in my life was Greg Williams when he was playing for the Swans. They were matched against us at the MCG. It was a centre square bounce. Whoever the Swans' ruckman was, the ball went straight to Diesel. He handballed it, got it back and then kicked a goal, gun-barrel straight over the head of the goal umpire. . It must have  taken 15 seconds or less. It took my breath away. I must be the only person who remembers it still.

Great as it was, it does not eclipse or supplant Oliver's goal - the Fist of God. Re the latter, have you noticed that the goal umpire materialises from out of nowhere as the ball heads in his direction. At the start of the sequence, it is almost as if he is not there at all. Magic aside, I dont understand it, not that it matters. Whatever else happens to us in life, we have this treasure.

Strange goal umpire magic? Never noticed that before. Oh well, guess I'll just have to watch it again!

It's really tempting to project all kinds of stuff onto that guy's reaction, but it was ALL just written so clearly on his face. That the cup was in reach and that we were maybe really finally going to do it, and all the elation of how we were playing...but also that familiar little voice saying, "But what if we lose it from here?", will I ever see us get so close again?

I've said before, would love to know this guy's story. I hope he doesn't feel embarrassed by his display of such raw emotion because I find it very moving every single time and it brings me right back into that moment as it first happened.

Whenever I meet a person I know is an Australian football fan but not a Melbourne or Dogs supporter, I ask them whether they thought it was a good Grand Final. We all think it was great, but does a final margin of 74 points mean it was good game to watch for everyone else? Everyone I have asked has said it was great because it was close for three quarters and then just extraordinary to watch from the last minute of the 3rd quarter onwards. Some of them, have even watched it more than once purely for the enjoyment of watching such entertaining football.

We are such fanatics. Just like at times many of us have vented our frustration of losing, I guess the need for expressing  joy and praise is just as necessary. As Ive said many times now, I can't wait for the next season. I really do believe we are going to be even better which will be interesting because in terms of losses we hardly had many. I guess we will have even less but some really BIg the things to be delivered. I hope Hawks, Cats and Eagles are amongst the recipients. Also looking forward to seeing more fans and bigger crowds ( ones b4 covid)....If the enthusiasm from this site is any gauge, then yep our games will have more supporters and be great attending.

Some might say to kick 3 goals within a minute is a fluke but to do it twice in the same quarter is genius. Significant family events aside possibly the best 2 minutes of our collective lives. Quite possibly tThe best ten minutes of football I have ever seen and i did watch Gawny in the PF. 

Consistent with years of training I couldn't call the game until the last 2 minutes but the last half of the 4th was a surreal experience. I only wish i had more alternate  commentaries to listen to over and over.

I went with the Dennis Commetti commentary version tonight.

Loved this call when Clarry kicked the last of the third. Enjoy from Petracca's goal.....

Yes indeed! Not wanting to put the Moz on him but Sparrow is going to be special. He IS really an elite kick, delivered to Brown perfectly, nearly got two,  and in a couple of other score involvements, kicks really long and got a few long bombs on the run through the season....  and ...he gets inside.  And only approx 30 games at 21yo....? Going to be an unreal asset!!!

I don't mind the 3AW version either.
I get a kick out've listening to Lloyd have a chuckle in amazement as Oliver slams his through.

Watching for the thousandth time the magic 40 minutes section I was wondering if the Bulldogs defender might have had trouble touching Sparrow's monster kick even if Tommy hadn't prevented him.It was quite high when it crossed the goal line. What others think?

Cordy probably would have missed it even if he was in the goalsquare on his own. He had that kind of game. Gave away the free to Brown that led to Petracca's second goal. Was on Fritsch when he got his 2 goals in a minute shortly before that. Was everywhere but nowhere.

It appeared to me to be above padding height when it went through. Another of Sparrows massive one step kicks which is never mentioned was in the prelim when he kicked the ball long and deep with a lot of hang time to the goal square that enabled Pickett to get the sit on the contest, mark and goal without missing a beat.

Actually Easton Wood was on Fritta for those 2.  Cordy stood TMc, Brown and Gawn mainly.

Didnt EW play to form - played in front and got jumped over, played behind and was left in the dust.

True but I think Baily would be hard to read as opponent as he is quicker than your standard traditional big tall forward and his leap makes him dangerous to play from behind. His recovery and roving skills are par excellence so if the ball goes to ground your in trouble as well. Basically he has the combined skill of a tall and small forward so I think Easton wood was probably second guessing himself. Fritta has also turned around his goal scoring accuracy by a mile. He is probably  our most improved player and his teammates search him out with confidence like Harmes did in the third. Not bad for a bloke who a few years back could be rewiring your garage.
