Just for the heck of it I extracted each team's Twitter follower stats:

I recall that a couple of years ago our figure was approx 40K.  So 70K is a big improvement.  However, we are right down the ladder across the AFL.

It is a bit disappointing given we have just won a flag.

Our figure may reflect our fan demographics ie much older fans who typically don't use social media.

Nonetheless, it says we have work to do to win over a younger generation.

There was a thread on BigFooty a few years back that highlighted how Melbourne essentially missed the "golden era" of social media throughout the late 2000s and 2010s. As someone that works in corporate affairs and digital media if you have an almost exclusively negative user sentiment on your social media, your growth, reach and influence stagnates. Combine that with a traditionally smaller, concentred support base and you can struggle to attrack online engagement.

I wouldn't read too much into it tbh. The social media golden era has well passed and we'll never catch up. Unless we are first to the table with a new, innovative platform.

Winning games will get the kids on board, we need to target the new generation of kids, but that will happen only with sustained victories. Kids are not interested in losing

The reality is that nothing gets the kids on board like being born into it.

The only logical conclusion is that the club should offer incentives for current members to have more children. Surprised they haven’t thought of it yet. Get to work the lot of you!

Wasn’t  it Peter Costello who once said, “have one for mum, one for dad and one for the MFC” ??? 😁

44,903  this morning

They are expecting to crack 45000 today. Puts this year about 7 weeks ahead of last year.

This guarantees jack, THBT. I’ve got three sons and not a one of ‘em is interested in footy, nor sports in general. The first can be put down to the possibility there was a mixup at the hospital (I took home the wrong kid). And it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the same thing happened with the second-born (there are ppl who’ve been twice struck by lightning so, can happen). But when you’re zip and three, you give up hope of boosting membership and hope everyone else is more successful in their endeavours. 😁

I blame the parents.

100%. To my disgust, my 7 year old was barracking for the Tigers until last year. All he had ever really known was Tiger success. Now he's a Demon, and allowed to sleep in inside the house the again :-)

Well my 11 year old cousin is a Blues supporter - apparently told his dad last week he wants to support the Demons 🤣💙❤️

Yep that’s it 100%
Giving kids free membership means almost nothing

Winning is everything

We just need to win games consistently.
no need to look at other Clubs Numbers.
if we win consistently we shall become big once again

Being big is important, sure. It means dollars and these mean options in a myriad of ways.

Our membership is not the problem, despite being conservatively 'average' and well below the achievements (in terms of growth and population)  of some other clubs. If we look between the lines, it is clearly evident that we are better off with whatever membership numbers we attract ... simply because of the class, calibre and superb citizenship of those people who could attach themselves to any club but instead, with such high-ranking character and discriminating sociological foundations, select and stick with the sophistication and refinement of the Melbourne Football Club over all others.

The schadenfreude is delicious particularly as my uncle delighted in telling me as a kid "you'll never see a Melbourne premiership" - now Carlton has the second longest drought 🤣

Was wearing my Dee's premiership shirt today (big lunch today with family of Hawks) and stopped at Chemist Warehouse in Malvern. A older lady complimented me on the shirt, and yes, was a very keen Melbourne supporter/MCC member but has never had an MFC club membership. I encouraged her to join but she is not the first I have met in this situation. MCC should be asked for their membership lists of Melbourne supporters, match up with MFC members and attack/encourage those who have not joined. Maybe privacy problems but give it a go.

MCC does send out a notification asking those listed as MFC supporters if they would like to take out a membership with the football club. Think it arrives about Feb sometime.

Signed up again Tuesday as a Interstate member and also paid for my twin Grandsons, which I have done since they were one (now 16). Lady I talked to said we are at 46700. This is very good as we should be close to 50k by first game. Let's hope so.

Judging by your avatar @MT64 could Coulrophobia be running rampant in the Eastern Suburbs?

I signed up my mother in law today as an armchair member (first time). She's on the Demons bandwagon now!

You obviously have high regard for your mother-in-law, such a worthwhile gesture. I'll let you in on a secret, Dr G - I failed to have the same level of regard for my mother-in-law. She was a classic case, absolutely difficult at the best of times. She has now passed away but still the memories reside. To quote a very truthful joke from Rodney Dangerfield - from several years ago - an apt descriptive might well be:

'My mother-in-law is such a terrible cook and host that we say grace after the meal!'

Emailed club on Monday for updated membership total. As of now it is 46,827. They are pushing for 50,000 for the opening round.

To put this in context last year we reached this number around 7 May and 2019 coming off the 2018 success we reached it around 21 April.

Go Dees

Nah I'm lucky I have great in-laws, and if she has decided to jump on the Demons (mainly because of her grandkids 😉) she can't be too bad 🤣

No. Just like the colours. Mind you a few clowns drive very large cars in High Street trying to park holding us all up.

You do not scare me MrT but you might scare some.
don’t think I can get up for the game on Wednesday but will definitely watch on the tv,

please give a cheer for me  cheers mate

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
