I tried to imply that there was nothing sinister about his habits: we also sometimes forget we're talking about seventeen year old boys with no experience of the real world. We know nothing about their home lives as well. We rate them the way cattle and sheep are evaluated at Elders auctions, or the performances of horses, in the main. I recall watching a practice match at Casey in his first year: the lad could play. That was when I asked my Wang friend about him. I asked him again two years later and he said, That lad has come a very long way. All credit to him.

Loved the extended shots of old mate here after the Petracca goal, wish we'd seen his reaction after the following goals. Because this felt like the beginning of the 'Is this real? is this happening?" thoughts, where we were all close to tears, but the result is still in play, so the dam has not burst. Mix that in with the excitement  that a superstar from our club is ripping a grand final open and declaring himself the best in the comp. Epic moment.

Anyone looking for some time to kill during during isolation or just wanting a general pick me up I highly recommend reading through the GF matchday threads on opposition boards on BigFooty. I read through the Bulldogs one the other night and it was heartwarming to see how quickly they went from "we've got this, Melbourne are [censored]" to "uh-oh I think we're in trouble" to "**** we've [censored] the bed here" to "no one could match them, Melbourne were unstoppable"

The Carlton and Richmond board threads were pretty funny in their own ways, it was a joy to read the Hawks supporters realising how far away their midfield was from competing with the best (IE OURS!!!) the St Kilda thread was just depressing I felt a kinship with them after reading through that misery (Petracca winning the Norm Smith just to rub it in) and really hope they can break their drought soon.

Looking forward to killing time reading through the Essendon and Collingwood threads, the Geelong one should be hilarious too.

How good is the Richmond thread?  "We could have beaten both of these teams.  Terrible grand final.  Low standard, no hard footy.  Dusty this Dusty that".

Really hope they miss the 8 again this year.

Seems like the ultimate 'killing time at work' or 'waiting in bank queue' thing to do. I haven't yet, but I think I just might. Ill start with reddit here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AFL/comments/pv27lc/match_thread_melbourne_vs_western_bulldogs_2021/?sort=new It's pretty messy to get through. Not even sure if it will load every comment.

Below is the post-match thread for more relevant comments. I find reddit a little more witty and less vitriolic, with the way the upvote filtering works:

Boy talk about this news !!! It's as old as six years ago fish and chip wrappings.

A photo of Clarrie when drafted will show him with plenty of weight loss from about 3 months prior to this time say August.

Clarrie moved  out of home for a period to Mooroopna and his mum ( who I met at the Premiership celebration Day snd is a super lovely typical Vic. Country Mum) used to come down and try and ensure Clarrie had some sort of a diet.

He did miss out on the Vic Country team that year not chosen early that year,

He was also a late fast bloomer for the Top 10 in the draft and we had to overlook our original choice ( and the popular public favourite Darcy Parish).

Credit to Darcy he is now a gun but Clarrie  is worth 2 GUNS AND MORE!!

Found I've got another leftover habit from the Grand Final.
Can't walk past a football without picking it up and practising a few "Trac Dribblers".
Made me think there'll be a ton of Melbourne supporting kids who'll have that kick down to an art form.

Just had a read.
Makes me wanna slap a bunch of those clueless fools upside the head.
Little wonder it's Dusty this, Dusty that.
They've only got one player and if he wasn't there they'd have no recent flags.

Clarry himself in interviews has said many times that his diet was bad.
His original highlights reel shows a kid with a heap of skill and abilities, but he was carrying extra kg’s

Roosy could see what was there

Yes SWYL what's your point

We both and thousands of Dees fans have followed the Clarrie career and highlights.

Great Credit to him MFC and staff coaches etc  We now have a footballer ( one of about half a dozen that are ground breaking and A grade) who could be our greatest ever player.

Many if us grew up in the 31 Ron Barassi era and he us at least matched or many say surpassed as our greatest Demon but Clarry is on track ( or is Trac CP5 on track) or are both to join our 2 latter day heroes as greatest ever?

PS Maxy says don't forget me !!!

most of that was extra kg’s from being a country boy

I (for one) didn’t know this and am glad it was mentioned. Many comments on these boards reference things that happened years ago and have been discussed both at the time as well as since happening. There’s nothing wrong with that. 🙂

i think the point was that dieter's comment was somewhat ambiguous and could have been interpreted as suggestive of more than just dietary issues

It was, according to the man from Wang, but nothing which could not be fixed: and it was nothing sinister, nothing bad. Just some pointing in the right direction, which many 17 year old's need and get.

Friends, one thing I have noticed since that immortal night of 25th of September is how much more magnanimous i am towards other clubs and their triumphs. There was once a time when I could not watch Collingwood in the 90GF, or the Handbaggers in 2007 or the Western Bulldogs in 2016 - I was so envious and jealous. Now, I can settle down with You Tube and appreciate their victories for what they are worth - something, yes, something in the scheme of things -, even if none of them approach our canonical 38 seconds or whatever it is.

I know EXACTLY how you feel.

I can watch them with the full knowledge of the hard work that went into winning those premierships, and I don't feel the resentment or jealousy that I did before.

I also feel I have a better grasp on the capabilities of our and other teams. After we lost to Hawthorn and Essendon, I tried to delude myself that those teams actually had a chance against both of those once in a generation teams. Having seen a Melbourne team with the capability to win a premiership, I now know that was not the case.

When I see a club close to doing something special, I can recognize it. I see that Brisbane is our greatest competitor leading into 2022 and they will salute sooner rather than later.

When I also see supporters of teams big upping themselves when it really is a case of a small dog barking, I can recognize it for what it is. Carlton has recruited aggressively but most of their recruits of recent years are spare parts, flankers and role players at best. Yes, they have Walsh, McKay, Cripps (who might be too battered to contribute what he can), Weitering and Curnow (if he can stay fit) as blokes who can tear a game apart. But there just isn't enough class across the park for mine.

I'd watch a side to see if they break a premiership drought of sorts.
Swans
Cats
Watched the Aint GFs.
Dawks in '08.
Richmonds 1st.

The rest of the GFs I never bothered.
Usually big rich clubs winning flags with cherry picked guns poached from struggling clubs.
Never bothered watching any minor finals at all.

"Why not us."

Sitting down to watch Ash tonight I have the exact nerves as I did before our GF. There are a few comparisons, yes I know Ash has won 2 grand slam titles but it has been a long time since an Australian male or female has won this home title.

When Chris O'Neil came out and took the trophy I had the flashback of Garry with the premiership cup before the game handing it over.

Hopefully we get the same successful result. Go Ash!

I honestly believe this will be the case once his career is over.

Even better than Flower and yes Barassi.

Perth provided such a variety of supporters. I also noticed a "lady" with a Marie Antoinette hairstyle waiving demon colours.

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
