Or TMac, still unhappy about last year and perhaps playing second fiddle to Brown, wants to move on....

Really?

would you pay $700k for TMac?

He's not going anywhere unless he takes a 2 x $500k deal

Agree, he is contracted, will want his cash, and no one else is silly enough to pay it. 2 x $500 is a smart deal

We can put to bed any scenario involving trading Gus, Jackson or Rivers. That will not happen, unless those players come out and request a trade.

While Gus may not be highly rated on these forums, he is extremely highly rated at the club and is part of the leadership group. Zero chance he is getting the flick. In fact, I would suggest we are looking at Cerra to enable Gus to play more time on ball.

Not sure I agree. Weideman is leaving due to no opportunity, why would another key forward want to come to us? Also, you can do more than one trade/draft selection per year. There's players leaving, future picks, free agents, the draft.. A lot of options.

Come on mate. Seriously. Bit of hyperbole here. If you think trading in one player and potentially losing one who wants to leave will 'tear us apart' then I have some absolutely shocking news about how many list changes there are every year...

Think weid not locking in a spot is more of an indication of where he is at and not the strength of our key fwds, I doubt very much if anyone currently performing as a kpp on a senior list on a consistent basis would have any trouble keeping one of tmac or Ben brown out.

If you look at our list we have the whole best 22 and then some locked in for next year and beyond, the only players yet to sign on are not in the team on a regular basis. I don’t foresee any one under contract asking to go in this years trade period unless we push them out. To get Cerra a top 10 player would need to be traded like a viney or Langdon or Salem or a young high pick like Jackson or Pickett. Which means a zero net gain. No fringe player would bring in enough to get a deal done even with picks we have. If it could great but I’m trying to be realistic.

Yeah, the club has done a good job at re-signing the key players, but let's be honest, contracts don't mean a lot these days. Nothing to stop a contracted player requesting a trade, it happens nearly every offseason now.

But again, I'm not advocating we force anyone out to get Cerra, I'm talking about the possibility someone requests a trade and that trade ends up helping to facilitate the Cerra deal.

Sometimes your hands are tied somewhat with trades, but I think we've done pretty well with making the best out of those situations as a club.

I think I've said it elsewhere, but I'm interested in how we handle the trade period now that Mahoney is no longer around.

Do the people who remain have the same skill and cunning when it comes to trading, or were the people in the background doing the back and forth for him?

With our seemingly crappy draft hand, it will be a minor miracle if we can get Cerra in without a player of some note requesting a trade out of the club.

I trust Tim Lamb, but I guess we'll see.

Yeah, from the outside it seemed like Mahoney was a trade period master. Was ahead of the game with the points system and trading future picks.

Wonder who will handle the trade period dealings this year? I'm assuming Richo, obviously in consultation with Lamb.

Same. Mahoney had a remarkable capacity to turn what we want into what we need. Hopefully he left his playbook lying around

Surely Cerra would be crazy to see Carlton as a potential destination?

Board level and football department just too unstable.

Apologies guys, I'm gonna hold fire for now. Only very very sketchy rumours at the moment, really would not be worth posting. If things get any more solid I will post for sure.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
