Trolling gold. All the classic tropes.

Even the Nazis get a run.

It is actually quite heart-warming to see posters try and help others learn how to handle trolls properly by providing so many opportunities to practice doing so.

Meta.

My favorite (?) part was when he said he wasn’t advocating returning to the days of brutal colonial rule as some had accused him of, but that life under majority rule in South Africa was bad for everyone. (Waiting for him to chime in with his pedantry based, semantic argument in 3, 2, 1).

The curious bit was no one had actually accused him of anything of the sort up until that point.

That was kind of giving his game plan away at that point.

Reading some of the absurd historical revisionism by some of the posters here is probably enough to push moderate readers into becoming conservatives.

Especially those trying to impose 2020 morals & standards on previous generations and historical events.

I always thought that part of Trump's appeal was a reaction to the more bats$h!t crazy views of the extreme left. Plenty are alive & well on Demonland.

If you want to be conservative, you'll be conservative. You don't become conservative just because your feelings have been hurt. You become conservative because that is your value system. It's the same for progressives, centrists or anyone else.

By the by, Trump appealed to those that had been forgotten by big capital and the neoliberalism of the Democratic establishment. Ironically, Trump is from that very same establishment, which is why he was friends with the Clinton's and moved in the same circles prior to his presidency.

And there's nothing extreme Left about the Democrats at all. You've just bought a nonsense reactionary line parroted by the likes of Fox News/Sky.

Democrats being viewed as the extreme Left is the Overton Window in overdrive. It's the same sort rubbish said by those who think universal healthcare is socialism. The latter of course is something the Democrats and their current President would never in a million years adopt - Biden is aligned with big pharma and the private insurance firms. I'd love to know what you think is extreme Left. 😂

Let me give you an insight into the troll, the very thing this is all about. The internet troll has no connection to his account, he has little care for the account. The troll is probably rolling through comments with 3 or 4 accounts.

Troll would have multiple Gmail emails and yahoo emails, all the generic easy to get email addresses. How are you going to stop this? How are you going to get to know the person directly to stop them.

There is no free speech as long as there is consequence to speech.

You can't go around blocking and banning accounts as there are too many and more will pop up. What, is Demonland going to become invite only? That drains the pool a little, stops conversations that challenge you. (Something like echo chambers)

There is a reason we grew up in the era of "ignore the bullies and they will get bored and leave you alone" and yes we all copped a few sluggs in the guts for trying.

Prepare for the world or it will swallow you up and spit you out.

Well, it's late and I probably shouldn't post after this much wine, but I have just watched Monday's replay.

If that is what it takes to be troll then count me out. One account and one email address is more than enough for me to remember!! Its like those smug guys with wives AND girlfriends. I mean really, who has the enegy?

And before you respond, just don't.

The thing that I hear a lot from people that (wilfully or not) don’t understand the impact racism can have on people, is things like ‘it’s just words’ or ‘their overreacting’ or ‘it’s just a joke’. I still see comments on social media or hear people that I work with that say these excuses.

At times I’ve been called a ‘white maggot’ by indigenous people. This has absolutely no effect on me as it is just a name and just words. There’s no history of my whiteness being genocided because of being white, no history of my parents/grandparents being taken away from their families because they were white, refused jobs because of being white, being viewed suspiciously, enslaved because of being white, my culture and language being purposefully erased by the state because for being white etc. etc. etc.

There is no inter-generational trauma I face because of my skin colour.

The same is very different for indigenous people.

For indigenous people, being called a racial slur is hundreds of years of trauma, vilification, genocide and being assumed to be ‘sub human’ which is solely based on skin colour/culture.

It’s not a joke, it’s not just words, indigenous people aren’t being too ‘sensitive’, these slurs are bringing up all of that history of being thought of as sub-human which is massively alienating and hurtful. It is something white guys like me will, never, ever understand or actually be made to feel like this. It’s alien to us as in racial terms, we have always been ‘normal’ (I.e. white) Australians.

Once you realise the weight of this, there is no possible way you could dismiss this as being anything other than an incredibly hurtful, cruel and hateful thing to do.

In my younger days I was too scared to speak up about casual racist remarks. But now I think it’s the very least that I can do to not accept racism in any form. It’s not funny, they aren’t jokes and they aren’t ‘just words’.

Good post. In fact l think it is time for all of us in this society to get on the front foot as far as racism is concerned, especially when it comes to our indigenous brethren. Far from aboriginal society being backward as many of the racists think, in its own way It has been, and is one of the most sophisticated societies in the world particularly when it comes to nurturing and looking after the land, which it regards as sacred. It is also one of the oldest civilsations in the world, something of which all Australians should be immensely proud and celebrate.

It is not by accident that indigenous players of our great game seem to have a natural affinity for it, and are grossly over represented in elite player numbers when compared to their proportion of our population - they and their ancestors have been playing the game, or a form of it for thousands of years. It is in their DNA, and don’t we all benefit from it, not least the MFC, where some of our very best, and most brilliant,  players are and have been indigenous.

Racial abuse directed towards them is despicable and disgraceful, where nothing short of a whole of club and supporter base response to fight against this will be both appropriate and responsible, and l commend the club for being proactive in this regard,.

There are differing views on abortion sure. But expressing those views in discussion does not need to be offensive.

One side of that debate says "everyone must follow my religious perspective" and wants to demonise and shame those who don't. The other side of that debate says "it's up to the individual to choose in accordance with their own beliefs".

If that debate gets offensive it's because one side has decided to attack the other or force someone else to act a certain way. It's not because the topic has to be offensive.

There is NO connection between racism and the abortion debate. The abortion debate is simply that, a debate where people have different views quite legitimately and both can walk away from it with their dignity in tact.

Racism is where one section of society seeks to belittle another simply on the basis of their skin colour or ethnicity. No-one’s dignity is left in tact, least of all the victim’s. Ridicule, disparaging and yes discrimination on the basis of one’s skin is an injustice which should not be in any civilised society. To equate it to the abortion debate is absurd.

Mate they are not interested in fixing stuff.

This forum provides platform where they can show they are smarter & more virtuous than the rest of us.

And it allows them to deliver a long winded sermon.

There's about half a dozen on here all furiously agreeing with each other in an echo chamber.

And you find that they hardly ever actually address any difficult questions put to them.

I would also wager that very few actually have any Indigenous friends which while its not a crime is certainly interesting in view of this conversation

You are a little misguided in what a troll is. Do correct me if I am wrong but I have not attacked anyone, I just a differing opinion.

Just thought a few would be open to getting an understanding of the correct way to deal with trolls but its too far of the textbook you follow so "burn the witch" aye pagans?

This is an excerpt from the club statement this week.

The majority of posters here are trying to live this.

A small minority of you are choosing to attack, argue, defend against, "devil's advocate" or some other obfuscation tactic to prevent this happening.

The club is calling you out on your behaviour and saying you are an anachronism.

Yes this whole thread is out of scope to what I thought Demonland was about. Yes online bullying and targeting someone online is abhorrent, what happened to Kossi, Eddie and all indigenous players online should never happen today. But people who troll as a hobby have little care for the burner accounts they create. Talking about them doesn't discourage a troll and thinking you are hurting them this way is laughable.

In Kossi's situation the club should handle it, giving him guidance and support. Issue a statement that a member of the club was targeted and reaffirm the club does not tolerate online bullying.

We are not helping the situation, it could have been someone with-in Demonland for all we know. Someone with a sick sense of humour creating a burner West Coast chat account to make the West Coast fans look bad. They have caused more damage to the young player.

These are people lives you are toying with, it's just football after all.

Not a fan of the term troll, hey?

Well if you are into the whole specificity of language deal, how about this for a more reflective piece of nomenclature?

And if you are into the whole tl:dr deal, here is a video. 🤓

Forget race, colour, creed, religion, simply

“treat people the way you want to be treated!”

A simple rule if applied by all would make the world a better place.

Tell me how you like to be misunderstood and labelled something you are not. Attacks are all one direction here.

Eddie is still commenting on Racism on a TV programme.

if there was ever someone least qualified.  shut your mouth Eddie.

The fact that he still thinks he is in the right and should comment is astounding.  This was the reason he was sacked as President and he doesn't get it

'Say No To Racism'

But I find it rather ironic that on another thread that is often running side by side with this one involves the vilification & abuse of a white man

No one has come to his defence and even his family & children are being brought into the argument (by default)

Sadly, many of you won't even know what I'm talking about such are the blinkered views of the mob

I'm for fairness all round but people can't pick and choose in that area.  Otherwise, hypocrisy reigns supreme

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?
Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
