Bringing in Joel Smith at this time of the year would would just be plain silly.

Hibberd is obviously the right replacement as it's a like for like. Hibberd is able to provide run and carry whereas Smith plays as that 3rd tall defender. Bringing in Smith for Hunt takes our one less run and carry.

 

I still think Hibberd for Hunt is the logical change in the backline. But I don't discount the possiblity that instead of Hibberd, the Match Committee decides to play Brayshaw in Hunt's role and puts Jordon on Brayshaw's wing.

Brayshaw has been used as a defender during the season, for example, when Tomlinson was injured and was very effective in the role. Jordon has played wing and looks comfortable there.

I'd be trying to play Hibbo back into form for finals rather than experimenting with Smith

Goody wants pace in the team and I think Hibberd is too slow these days Dazzler to play the role Hunt plays.

Smith hasn't been playing the third tall. He has been playing the run and carry role at Casey in the games i have seen (which admittedly is only about 4 or 5). Gets high up the ground and gets meters gained. 

I'd be interested in the views of  @KC from Casey about the role Smith has played and how he as gone this year.

They might say 4 to 5 weeks for Hunt, but I can’t see it. He has had surgery, so he now has recovery, rehab, and then has to get back into football mode. I love watching him play, but I don’t expect to see that happen this year.

 

And TMAC looked very proppy in the rooms after the game

Hibbo lost form a bit but has the score on the board for the job he did on Dusty and on Toby Greene, and even (for most of the game) on Stringer. He would be the right man for Cameron and for the medium size quality forwards that every finals team has.

I would expect that at this stage, there is no trying of new players; they will be anxious to settle our finals team. I would see Hibbo for Hunt and Weed for TMac; sparrow to lose his place, and probably Jordon goes out for Viney when he returns.

I have not once seen Smith show remotely any of this speed and run and carry. It doesn't exactly have to be like for like in terms of pace, but on the naked eye Hibberd has the pace over Smith.

Jayden Hunts last game against Gold Coast he had 379m gained.

Joel Smith's last 4 games at AFL level last year his metres gain were 69m v Essendon, 59m v GWS, 45m v Freo and 61m against the Swans.

Joel Smith adds absolutely minimal to our team should only be considered if Petty goes down.

It is about structure.  If we are planning on using 3 tall forwards in the finals we need to play 3 forwards this week.

His last VFL against Werribee he was at times playing on Whyley Buzza who is a 198cm key forward.

I'm pretty sure he didn't play on buzza.

Perhaps found himself marking him one or two times, but he definitely played the running half back role.

Had 19 disposals and seven marks.

And was close to best on ground.

That's because he played a lock down third tall role. Replaced omac if memory serves

Again, that is not the position he has played in the vfl. At least, not in the four games I have watched.

He has played the same role as Hunt and rivers in those games.

With TMac out Weed will be busting to show what he can do. I hope he has a game that causes the selectors real nightmares. A bag of 10 would be nice. 

 

I got a feeling we wont be bringing in a tall, keeping melksham in the side and just bring Tmac in against Geelong if his back is ok then.

Sounds very hindsight-y to be now arguing that, because it still isn't right, we never should have taken him over.

I suggested last week that we don't take him on the plane with a back injury, so no hindsight, just turned out to be one of the few errors the FD have made this year. He might have seemed right, and wanted to keep him with the rehab staff, but at the end of the day it looks like it's going to cost him at least 2 matches out of the team.

I think bringing Hibberd back in without the chance to regain touch could be worse, he was so bad those last few games and looked so low on confidence that it would be better (IMO) to send him to a scratch match (no Casey unfortunately) to get some easy touches and then bring him back in when he's right. Bowey has been fantastic since he's come in because he's been so clean, he's really taken Hibbo role.

Maybe.

But perhaps the reason they took him to Perth was they wanted the squad of players (ie the best 22 plus the 4 players the want as cover key outs) to have the opportunity to train as group, away from prying eyes and practice some new set ups and set plays.

The week would also have given them lots of time to meet collectively, in groups with lines coaches and individual to discuss tactics, review video edits, scout opponents etc etc. 

And of course spend time together as a squad to build chemistry as we make our push towards the summit (sorry, couldn't resist the cliche). 

Tmac is key member of the team and they would have been keen to have him there. And really what risk did they take? Yes its long time to be sitting in plane, but in reality it is unlikely to have done him any harm.

We can cover his loss against the Crows and he two weeks to get right now for the Cats game, having spent spent a week in sunny Perth (up till game day) staying in a five star hotel and resort.

I presume you didn't have any inside information on TMac's state and certainly not more than the club staff, so you were more or less  guessing.     Nevertheless you got it right this time, but I wouldn't be polishing my 'realist' medals based on that. 

None of us have any idea if  sitting in the plane or missing his own comfy bed played any part in aggravating the injury.  Maybe he'd have missed all the benefits of being with the team that Binman mentioned for nothing if they had left him behind while gaining no or little recovery benefit.  Who knows.  Hopefully he'll be back and rested for the rest of the season.
