It’s about time and long overdue that the AFL and State Government come up with a better plan for allowing crowds to the football.  Apart from killing the game for spectators the long term effect for clubs is horrendous.

they can improve the track and tracing, separate the crowds at games and do a lot more instead of clubs playing in front of nobody.

I’ve made it to two games in two years due to this and frankly they are in fairy land if they think this is not going to continue next year and beyond.

must be better ways of separating crowds before and when they leave the stadium.  I would even go as far as asking patrons to get a Covid test before they can attend, and also letting fully vaccinated people attend.  Anything is better than the current nonsense.

Soidee, It still amazes me that when we do go we are jammed in the same row with people I don't know, instead of staggered in adjacent empty rows, I refuse to sit in my allocated seat if I have strangers both sides of me, I know this confuses the tracking of patrons and they need to fix this.

No crowds for the next two weeks then hopefully at least 50% for our Crows game at home, and then fingers crossed for around 75% for finals with a full house on grand final day as long as we can keep any new covid cases from spreading again.

Williamstown on a light wind day is brilliant.

Amazing how the ships almost can seem as if they're right beside the ground

no cases for Melbourne in 8 weeks? ... very low probability is my guess

That is the guy who, despite being advised being a close contact flew SYD-BNK, was picked up by the QLD flight attendant, and I am speculating here, might have been responsible for the detection of virus in wastewater in Byron (the dates match and there are no other cases here), then crossed the border seeding QLD outbreak and then lied to contact tracers about his movements.

Shocking.

And why wouldn’t he? I mean, with almost zero consequences, why wouldn’t he? He (and anyone else for that matter) can travel willy-nilly knowing that at worst a $200 fine is the extent of the  punishment, if caught. This is what has transpired with those Sydney removalists. One of them, not all, but ONE of them has copped a $200 fine for not wearing a mask!

Agree.

The most beautiful ground and location in Melbourne?

I would love to play cricket there.

But when windy makes Casey winds feel like a zephyr!

A big difference people seem to forget about these removalists, who I despise with every inch of my soul, is that they actually had a work permit to come across. They didn't break the rules coming into the state, and they were not aware that they were sick until they returned home and got tested. The only official rule they broke is not wearing a mask.

Does that mean they don't deserve Karma to hit them like a bus? No it doesn't.

But this guy broke very clear entry guidelines going into another state. He lied. He will cop a far bigger fine, just as the idiots from Melbourne who flew to Darwin for a wedding copped a fine of around $4k each. Or how the idiots who drove from Melbourne to QLD in the last lockdown did.

Permitted workers who bend the rules will always cop a far smaller fine than those who come across without any permits whatsoever and break clear border laws.

You’re right with that. But during Dan’s presser this morning a journo made mention of the fact that they (the removalists) lied to, or at the very least, misled authorities thereby making contract tracing unnecessarily harder.
Dan deflected the question saying that it’s a VicPol matter. But he did say he doesn’t want anyone to be afraid of coming forward if they have, inadvertently or orherwise, broken any rules. It’s the same reasoning he used last year when he wouldn’t come down hard on restriction-breakers coz it might put others off from coming forward had they breached the rules.

Agree, except that the removalists apparently lied or weren't wholly truthful with contact tracers early on, which slowed down our initial attempt to ringfence the outbreak.

Broke the mask-wearing rule then didn't help contact tracers. [Censored] them. But I know that it's hard for the government to punish them because we want people to have no fear in telling contact tracers what they've done and where they've gone.

Unlike protesters who willingly flout the laws and no penalty imposed other than hollow threats for anybody the media will listen to

Have a look at the performance of fines victoria  wrote off over a billion dollars in outstanding fines

so if you are an anti lockdown sort of person or a Black lives matter dude or you just want to protest (What have you Got) there is very little chance of effective penalty so go ahead and protest.

The  idea that the Vic Pol detectives would chase down all 5000  protesters is some kind of sick joke given their performnace in bringing single murderers to trial

A billion? Really?

Also, there's some suggestion the removalists did not break the mask-wearing rule which may have an exemption for professionals (for want of a better term) while they are moving furniture.

I totally get what both of you are saying, and trust me when I say if it was up to me, they'd be in jail.

However, if we start punishing people who break every rule severely, there is the very real risk that people who know they've done the wrong thing won't come forward to get tested and won't be fully honest with contact tracers. Those consequences are far more wide reaching than punishing individuals.

So while I get how infuriating it is, and while I think anyone who knowingly and unlawfully puts the lives of others at risk by breaking clear rules should be put in jail for 14 days (and made to work in a Covid ward without PPE if they protest lockdowns and vaccinations), the government is stuck between a rock and a hard place. They don't want to deter people from telling the truth, even if that truth is ugly.

Imagine if the family from Hume didn't disclose their movements. That is an entire chain of mystery cases that could turn into 100s of new infections. I rather they sit in the knowledge that their stupidity and selfishness infected their extended family/relatives, than cause a longer lockdown for the rest of us.

We are lucky to live in a country where compliance is generally very high. There will always be absolute [censored] heads who ruin it for everyone else. But overall I think most people do  their best to do the right thing in very difficult circumstances (lockdowns are exhausting!) and we need to support and encourage that as much as possible.

Not to stray off topic, I just wanted to pick this up - they apparently crossed the border illegally. Evidently there has not been any fine for that action just the mask breach.

This article says 2/3 tested positive eventually

Oh ok well I understood they did have a permit. At least that's what Jerone told me, and I do not question the commander!

I still maintain they should be punished, but perhaps the police couldn't pin enough on them?

Did they get fined in SA?

Indeed.

But the lynch mob want someone to blame.

The 'facts' of the mysterious removalist's trip seem to change, depending upon which media outlet is reporting, or the shifting attitude of public figures like Jerome. The real details may never be made public.

So much for the book being thrown at them. That speaks volumes

Whilst I am very disappointed this highly infectious virus strain leaked back into Victoria, I am also sad for the family of the removalist brothers who lost their matriarch to COVID after she apparently turned away offers of help and died at home alone.

They didn’t have any such exemption. Have you seen the footage? It makes my blood boil. Granted, they didn’t know they were infectious, but coming from Sydney at that time, anyone with a skerrick of intelligence would entertain the possibility of being infected. They even accepted an offer from a young bloke to help them manoeuvre a couch into the elevator. That young bloke dodged a bullet, unlike some of the other residents.

Haven't seen the footage and am not in any way trying to defend the removalists. The bigger picture is the problem here as very well explained by Jaded a few posts back. What we need is one of those fantastic retrospectoscopes. You know, the tool that would allow law enforcement to look back in time at the behaviour of idiots alleged law breakers well after the threat of Covid has passed. In that way, law breakers may be willing now to be cooperative.

Am i going crazy? Am i right that Frankston are no longer in the VFL?

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.
