COVID & AFL 2021

Bad news:  26 new local cases.

Good news:  all connected to known clusters.

Round 19 can go ahead as currently scheduled.  After that it becomes a juggling act for the AFL.

Whichever way the cards fall we are well placed with few injuries.  We have had little disruption to players (a lot to fans and club's $) in that players spent about 10 days in Sydney in the May lockdown.  If we have to go to Qld then directly to WA I reckon we can take it in our stride and cover any player who can't play in either or both states for family/personal reasons.

And apparently all but 2 of the 26 have been in self-isolation from before they became infected and therefore have not been spreading the disease further.

A person can be infectious without symptoms so are innocently 'out and about' within the allowed restrictions.

Or it could be because too many are flouting the rules and or not taking symptoms seriously..

Presumably because of the 2 plus any as yet unreported cases (for example, people who are asympomatic but still in the community).

The secret ingredient for every premiership winner is luck. 

And (touch wood) we have our fair share of it thus far. 

As you say we have had a great run with injuries. Good management plays a big part in that obviously, but you still need some luck. 

Other than the financial hit from no crowds, thus far we have avoided any real major impact from covid related fixturing reshuffles.

Losing the Alice game actually helped from an on field perspective as we played that game in Sydney instead, so less time flying etc. And having to play the Pies in Sydney was not too disruptive.

Haven't had to hub or do any disruptive quarantining palaver like the Cats  and Dogs had to in Perth, or Pies and cats to play in Adelaide.

For our Port and Crows games it was normally procedures, which really helped for the Port game (eg flying in the previous day, getting to stay overnight in a hotel, having all day to prepare etc ).

And whilst flipping the dogs and gc game might impacts our preparation for the dogs game, they will alos have been impacted. And it means that the players didn't have to travel this week, giving them a couple of weeks at home.

And crucially it is almost certain we will avoid having to play GC in Darwin. A game at Metricon will be much less physically taxing given the humidity in Darwin, involve much less air time and be less logistically complex. And we play well at Metricon, and have fans in Qld who can hopefully go, so that helps too. 

And then if they fly direct to Perth they can hunker down there and prepare for the Eagles game.

In Pert, they will quarantine in a resort complex in Perth, but continue to train. Might be very helpful to be away from Victoria, be all together in one spot for a week and be able to focus on things like going through, try some new tactical ploys, work on structures etc etc. 

If we fly in for the GC game, say on the Saturday and then fly to Perth on the Saturday night, we can do the 7 day quarantine, play Eagles on the Sunday and then fly out again that night. So back home late Sunday night.

Meaning all up they are away for only 8 days. Manageable and possibly really good timing in terms of bonding and getting reset and focused for the final push to the summit.

I am well aware of that - it is semi-rhetorical. What I am saying is in Vic there seems to be a cultural/societal trend not to do this, c.f NSW. I don't live in Sydney, but am ex Mel,.

Not understanding why it is so critical we are in lock down now is not a football related comment.

But to answer your question in a football context, if we were not in lock down 'till at least next week or this current lock down does not work, then you and i will not be attending nay games of football in Victoria this year, including the grand final.

It looked like you were laying the groundwork for another political bashing so I felt it important to not take the bait and play it with a straight bat.

That aside, Vics and in particular in Melbourne we have learnt the hard way, having endured 185 days of lockdown so are more accepting of the need to follow the rules!  6 months of on/off stress!

If people are going to post nonsensical articles from partisan papers - which are seeking to deflect blame from the real source -  then that is a political post that merits a for-like response.

Otherwise, all that happens is that nonsense is propogated - as have seen in other posts where some posters appear to be parroting said nonsense or taking it as gospel, or else polticising largely apolitical identies (like QLD's CHO).

Anyway, it's good to know where the line is. Nonsense from the partisan AFR is ok.

QLD-NSW border shut from Friday, some exceptions for NNSW border zone.

For NNSW residents, this includes attendance at games (ie Gold Coast, Gabba) but peculiarly, doesn't exclude shopping for personal needs (YES officer, new golf clubs from Drummond ARE a personal need related to exercise).

Stadia attendance capped at 20k.

Article in the Hun this morning talking about how much clubs finances have been affected by no crowds and changed fixtures. MFC is one of the worst. Lost 2.5 mill in 8 days. Lost  last weekend and this coming weekend. Dogs very little expect about 2.4 mill profit for the year. Dees a big loss even if we were to win the GF. I don't know how some admins keep going imagine if we were bottom 4 and 30k members. Does not bear thinking about.

Add to that the at best hybrid season that at least the first 6 months of 2022 will be. ( vax certificates, masks, distancing etc) and revenues are shattered.

Take care OD and enjoy that monopoly game with your grand daughter. Can be a very competitive game as we all know

If it doesn’t end with the table being angrily flipped, you’re not playing it right.?

I still occasionally vacuum up the odd hotel or dice and we haven’t played Monopoly in at least two years.

Usually takes about 3 sittings to end a game. She is 10 years old and very switched on about the game. It is a real pity she is cats fan.

I agree with this. On a disruption basis, our fixture has been good.

On a financial basis, we've copped it bad. I haven't read that Herald Sun article but it would be no surprise to me at all if we had the worst financial result from the COVID disruption this year of any club.

We've had four home games impacted by the two Victorian lockdowns, two of which were huge (Alice Springs and Queen's Birthday), one of which is this weekend's 1 v 2 game that you'd expect to have filled whatever capacity the MCG was allowed up to maybe 60,000 in a non-COVID year,  and another vs a Victorian club in Hawthorn.

A contrast is Hawthorn, who so far have had one home game impacted: their Round 14 home game vs Essendon, which was moved to their other home ground in Tasmania and drew a huge crowd. Every other game they've played in the two Victorian lockdowns has been an away game, including again this week.

So whilst disruption wise it's been a good year, financially it's been terrible.

Chin up old dee, our parents band grandparents lived through far worse and whilst it’s easy for me to say, I’m sure we are closer to returning to more sustained normality (not that we will return to pre-covid life) than we were 12 months ago

Not sure that is having much affect at the moment PSD. I have a few friends who are much worse off than me. However using that to explain away your problems only works for a little while and then you return to whoa is me. As for the the MFC I can barely believe we are on top of the ladder. Very un MFC style.

I hear ya OD, it sucks.  tough to keep your head up.  the fact that others have it worse doesn't stop it being ****house.  so complain away I say!

I'm so flat this week, I don't even care that much if the demons win on Sat. empty stadium, not celebrating with mates.

I'm sure I'll fire up by Saturday though.
