Sparrow is a must in for mine. I think he was only squeezed out for guys like Harmes who has been OK since coming back but would love to see Sparrow back in.

I really dislike how easily Melksham comes back in to the side. I know there's the Goodwin's favourite narrative but he just gives very little apart from a few decent inside 50's a game. I'd rather see Harmes and Bayley player his high HF role and Sparrow come in to fill in more time in the middle for Harmes' rotation there.

I like the idea of Viney back this week but if he's not 100% which I can't imagine he I'd rather he take another week off. Brining him back against the slickest side on the quickest ground isn't a good idea imo.

Not sure if it's been raised elsewhere but Goody indicated in a press con 5-6 days ago that Viney may play this week or it could be 2-3 weeks. Understandably, they have jumped on this injury quickly and aim to reload the foot very slowly. He was totally non-commital about the return date. I'm not an expert on body language etc., but I got the vibe it might be later than this week...no risks will be taken.

Fritta and Spargo wont be discussed for the same reasons as Hunt snd Petty you mentioned. Although Fritta and Hunt need a good serve. Melksham snd Jetta are must outs.

Sam w is a hard one but Im inclined to go back to Bb. They seem even except Bb has kicked more goals per game and is more accurate.

Not sure about the ins. Hopefully Salems up.

Fritta needs a rocket, Spargo and Hunt just need to find form, Petty needs confidence; so either back at VFL level or continuity, although the disclaimer on that is I think he'll only get another week of that without lifting.

Can't imagine any half decent footy club bringing in Ben Brown after 4 touches and 0 goals at the lower level.

The issue with dropping Petty might be finding an adequate replacement. TMc could go back but that would create havoc given our forward line dramas. What do you reckon , LN?

Well we know it's at least Salem in, you'd imagine for Jetta.

and i don't mind backing Weid in for another week. but if he has another down week, he's leaving himself open if either of the Browns play well.

I think if Petty has a poor one it may force the clubs hand. Could be Majak, pending his game on the weekend coming, can't see TMac going back unless he completely loses form. Then of course there's the midseason draft or even a rejig of the backline if the Dogs open us up like the Crows did.

Sparrow has to come in for Melk for his tackling and ball winning prowess, the Dee squeeze also has to return Friday night.

If our mids break even, we win, but that's the problem - they are close to unstoppable inside and out.

Hopefully, being in quarantine for a day or two throws them.

What form do you expect Spargo and Hunt to find?

Spargo is in perfect form. He's doing exactly what the coaches ask week in week out.

Hunt is playing about as well as we can expect from Hunt. He had a poor game against the Crows, some of which might be explained by Salem out, but overall he's been serviceable. If we're going to go deep in the finals he'll have to step up under pressure but there's very little competition for his spot right now.

Not saying he should be dropped necessarily as I reckon others need to go before him, but gee Gus looked slow on the weekend. Not to mention the absolute clangers as well.

I'd argue it was there against Adelaide.

It was just that final piece of pressure/desperation on the ball that was missing.

It was a good lesson. Gut running and field coverage is not enough, you've still got do something when you get there.

I love Spargo, think he gets underrated by Dees fans in general, but reckon he's not had much impact the last few weeks. Blues game I thought he was pretty good, but Crows game he didn't apply enough pressure to make up for his lack of scoreboard impact in terms of score involvements. Same against the Swans. "Perfect form" is a ridiculous call mate, and as far as doing what the coaches ask; I think we'd agree that would be forward pressure and score involvements yes? Been down on both in a few games over the last month.

So we agree Hunt had a poor game then? So, he needs to find form again right? So we agree. Excellent.

If you read my original comment I didn't suggest either would be dropped this week, just they IMO they will come up in discussions as players who need to lift.

Shouldn’t forget that BBB has kicked 173 career goals at Docklands! He could have 0 possessions in the VFL and it doesn’t change my view that he’s in our best 22.

How do you tag him? He plays completely inside the contest?

On the shoulder like a wet rag.  Vince did it once to Danger against the Crows in Adelaide with some reasonable success years back.  Harmes loves a scrap but would need to curb his urge to hurt going the other way so often and stay right on Libb at the stoppages.  Hibb also capable surely?

Not sure Maj has the speed off the mark or tank any more to go with fairly quick tall defenders LN.  Can probably handle it with ball being bombed in but they'll likely just try and get the match up they favour here.

I'm talking about the possibility of Majak coming in for Petty, so he wouldn't have to worry about quick defenders. Also, I don't reckon either Tomlinson or Petty are quick either anyway.

I agree on that front LN...but you also need a pretty good tank to go the distance yes?

Yep, although maybe not as much for that particular role for us. That would be the query though for sure. I don't think it's likely he comes in, only if Petty has a shocker and Maj has a ripper. The midseason draft is where my intrigue is piqued atm.

I was laughed at for suggesting Viney would struggle to play more than 10 games in the pre season

It's a big loss that's for sure.  Hopefully we can get Harmes up to somewhere near his 2019 form from here to make up for this pretty big out.

I just can't see the Weid getting dropped. The FD would have thought long and hard about the permutations/combinations ( Weid poor, BB poor in VFL, Weid poor and BB good, Weid good and BB better ....) before dropping BB.

They had to pick one and back him in for a few weeks. What happens if BB replaces Weid this week and performs poorly?

Posted

There are some players, who regardless of skills, experience, size, role, age, etc. do not play better in the magoos even though there's a substantial drop off in intensity and quality of skill execution in lower grades. BBB might be one of these. I suspect his performance in the magoos won't be any different to what he produces in the seniors. If this is the case, the coach needs different criteria when selecting, or not selecting, these types of players. And we all know at Melbourne, some players have special privileges when it comes to selection.

Time to try Weideman or M Brown back?

Not for mine, not without training there and playing some VFL there first, and can't see that happening at this point. Think that 3rd spot will be out of Petty, Daw and potentially Bradtke given they've started playing him there. Joel Smith possibly, but he's still a month away.

Other option is they re-structure the backline and play someone like Hibberd or Jetta as the 3rd 'tall' and have Max drifting back more often I guess.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
