Not a huge Melk fan either but he could have kicked 3 last week as an opportunist forward...muffed a fairly easy set shot and a snap from in front

also bullied the ball forward in the contest when he had his 'turn' rotating thru the centre square

he wasn't nearly as poor as some on here are making out

I fully acknowledge my confirmation bias with melksham.

I might go watch his afl pro vision to see all his involvements.

By the by, for some reason thus far this season you don't seem to need an afl live pass to watch relays or the afl pro vision on afl.com.

I assume it is related to tbe kayo deal. Hopefully it will continue.

If we thought Fritsch's inaccuracy was going to cost us, we can't be relying on one of the worst kicks in the league to kick us a winning score, it's unsustainable. We might get lucky one week, but Max is just a terribly inaccurate kick.

Max Gawn career goal kicking stats: 62 goals 50 behinds. Not too bad.

Agreed, I think his touch was a bit off being his first game and he could stand to lift his pressure a bit but he wasn't diabolical. Give him another chance this week to see whether he can fill the Fritsch role.

Which is why the obvious move is Melksham playing Fritters role.

Basically the same size (2cms shorter and 1kg heavier), but like Fritter he plays tall.  And is a good mark - though not as good as fritter i don't think.

He is as good a kick at goal as Fritter and has good goal sense too.

As is the case for fritter, if he can snag 2-3 goals it doesn't matter so much that he is not getting big disposal numbers (not in Fritters job description in any case).

And like fritter, Melksham is no defensive star, though to be fair he still has Melksham covered.

And unlike Brown Melksham is in our best 22. Or so says goody, it would seem.

Fritter has improved markedly this year in tackling and pressure

Its time Melks did the same or he wont be picked

It makes you wonder what the metrics are that certain players are measured in.

as well as how many games before someone can find form (or be carried)... based on past evidence of that player being able to perform.

Personally I get annoyed at the reductionist terminology around 'he must have photos' or 'Goodwin's [insert any coach] best mate'

There are clear standards that must be met for sure - I reckon Demonlanders could pull together and get a rough consensus on the worthy stats for each part of the ground.

*perhaps we could get 23 folk each week to follow one player and look at all the 1%'s that they do (all the other metrics are readily available).

What he said.

Keeping to our structures Petty and M.Brown are the logical choices to come in. Goody just needs to back his system in and the players will perform. Changing the structures by adding a Bedford or Chandler to the forward mix makes us too short on marking and lead up type forward options. As for Petty we just need to get games into him to see what he's made of, otherwise what's the point in keeping these guys? I'd love to see Hibbered in for Nev as I still think he's our weakest link in defence.

Guess I nailed selections for this week. @binman feel free to chirp up champ.

I somewhat agree, but I don't think these stats quite tell the full story.  Many of Fritta's misses are from 30 - 40m out towards the boundary, where as Max's are often from 15 - 20m out straight in front.

I love Max, but how I do wish Max could have slotted through just one of those goals Vs Geelong over the years.

Depends. Are we getting the peanuts or giving them away?

As to the topic, I was outvoted by the match committee. I thought Melksham playing Fritsch's role was a closer like for like change than bringing in M Brown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
