Unless you're a tragic I don't see much incentive to attend. You can't jus rock up and get decent seats with a few friends. The AFL's not doing enough to get crowds in, NBL did $10 tickets, the AFL should follow suit with something to encourage attendance. It's gonna be a bad look when full capacity is back and crowds will still (likely) be down You have to get a ticket to the theatre for a play or cinema for film also so why the kickback fir a safety procedure that is the same at a lot of other entry points. It gets down to do you really want to go ? If so get up off your proverbial and stop winging. Quote
Cards13 9,117 Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 4 hours ago, whatwhat say what said: crowd looks pretty small for hawks v tiggas at the g based upon what you can see on the television coverage one has 75k members, the other has 100k members it will be interesting to see the official figures They said on the coverage that was the first time the Tigs have played a day game since the 2019 grand final. 2 Quote

Are we meant to conclude that the small crowd is because most Richmond supporters are vampires? Edited March 28, 2021 by La Dee-vina Comedia typo 1 4 1 Quote
george_on_the_outer 7,875 Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 (edited) The low crowds are because of the way tickets are allocated under covid rules. 75% of the MCG is available, but not of the total seats. It is 75% of the MCC, 75% of AFL/Medallion club, 75% of reserved seats etc. So to use the AFL area at the MCG as an example ( I don't know its capacity but lets call it 20,000), that means 15K allocated. But there aren't 15,000 Richmond and Hawthorn AFL members. Let's be generous and say there are 10,000. That means 5,000 seats do not get sold, alongside the 5,000 unavailable....in that area alone. Now using our game when you put a side like Fremantle in the MCG. You would need nearly 15K Melbourne supporting AFL members to be there, just to fill up the allocation. At Marvel, the Medallion club ( only using a vague memory here) has 12,000 seats out of a total capacity of 50K. So only 9K can be sold. Not many fans can afford to buy one of those seats, and the same problem happens. So while we have AFL, MCC, Medallion club and reserved seating areas, we will continue to have unsold seats.( under the current method of allocating tickets). (...and reserved seating includes those areas of the ground that Ticketek/Ticketmaster allocate to themselves to sell at higher prices....it is why you can't find a GA ticket for your membership, but they will sell you one in their areas) Edited March 29, 2021 by george_on_the_outer 4 4 Quote
whatwhat say what 23,863 Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 good post @george_on_the_outer however, non-club support members can still 'reserve' a ticket - gold and silver members with club support goes 'on sale' at 10am tuesday; non-club support at 11am so, for instance, tomorrow i am 'reserving' two tickets the dusty and buddy show at 11am what i find interesting is that in 2019 and previous years is that, as an afl member, if we wanted to 'reserve' a seat then i actually had to 'buy' them for $10 plus a $4 booking fee (i think, from memory) this year i can 'reserve' a seat on level 2 of the afl members stand at any game for $0 - so there's actually more 'value' in my $470 afl membership this year as i can more easily secure a ticket to any game than previous years also, something interesting to note is that nrl crowds are are strong by comparison with what they have been in years gone by - four of their games hitting around or above the 20,000 this round - across their 8 games they had 134,235, which i imagine would be pretty good for them Quote

Going to the theatre is an event for most people - something they might do a couple of times a year, so they make it a big day / night - dinner, event, maybe a night in the city. With the AFL building up certain games as stand alone events, people will make an effort to get to a couple of blockbuster games for the year, and that is it. I've thought for a number of years that there are less rusted on fans than there used to be, and last year has probably turned even more off. People may buy a three game membership to have some connection to the club and feel like they are making a contribution, but have no interest in spending 5 hours travelling to and attending games every week, especially when you can camp out on the couch for 2 hours to see a game. Average AFL attendances have generally been phenomenally high relative to our population, behind only the NFL and a couple of large soccer leagues. Maybe this is changing to go the way of the NRL. 1 Quote

Surprised by this. I would have thought AFL attendances relative to population would have been higher than NFL due to the size of the US population. Quote

But yes, yesterday was Richmond's first game using a red Sherrin since the 2019 Grand Final (the red Sherrin only gets use for games starting prior to 3pm, so these days only the Saturday 1.45pm and 2.10pm games and Sunday 1.10pm games get it). The red Sherrin barely got used in 2020, with so many night games during the compressed fixture. We only used it twice (which is not common for us given the number of day games we usually get in an ordinary season). 1 Quote

Superunknown 4,246 Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 Wasn't Carlton Pies 25k? I thought I saw that on the screen at the usual time. I'm wondering if your vaccination status might play into this once CSL ramps up (I just had my first AZ shot last week - side effects were interesting, but hardly incapacitating). Thinking about taking our 6yo to his first game v Suns at Metricon Round 19. I'd have said QLD was safe as until this morning. Quote

Longsufferingnomore 1,691 Posted March 29, 2021 Posted March 29, 2021 I dont understand the covid social distancing rules at Marvel. My row on the lower level all seats bar one were filled. The row in front of me there were three seats unfilled. The next row down was empty. Go figure! The previous week the MCC did a better job of social distancing. Quote

In reality I suspect there's a lot of smoke and mirrors but perhaps I'm a cynic. Quote
