Footy's Back

MELBOURNE will take on the Tigers this Friday 26 February in a behind-closed-doors practice match at Casey Fields.

Fans will be unable to attend due to AFL COVID-19 protocols, however full coverage will be available from 9:30am (AEDT) on melbournefc.com.au and the club app.

The commentary duties for the game will be shared by Ben Waterworth (Fox Sports) and Ben Gibson (Melbourne FC), with special guests from both clubs to provide insight into the upcoming season.

With the AAMI Community Series shortened, this will be Melbourne’s first match against an opposition side in 2021.

Melbourne v Richmond

Stream commences at 9:30am (AEDT)
Casey Fields – closed to the public

No injuries, some of the cobwebs blown out and not getting thrashed is all I am after today.

If he is to convince everyone he has turned the corner, you would like Tom McDonald to kick 4.

Would like Jordon or Sparrow to get plenty of footy and raise a few eyebrows over the starting midfield mix in round one

Jordon, with an o. Let's spell his name correctly, please.

I'm with Clint. For the first time in many seasons, I'm less fussed about the result and keen to see our depth show what they've got. And no injuries....

Very nervous how our forward line will function in the early weeks and specifically the lack of firepower.

Today will get our first glimpse of it.

Unless I'm dyslexic, I can't see Daw's name listed anywhere there.  Not a good sign for his hopes of making the list you'd think, or is he injured?

No he's not playing because they're are getting him back up to AFL fitness. You need to understand that since October last year when he finished at North Melbourne he's had no AFL to go off and instead has been training suburban level footy. It'll take him a few weeks at least.

He's only there for insurance, not to play straight away.

Good tackling pressure early.

You change the rules to speed the game up, yet don't pay an obvious 50 to TMac for deliberately slowing the game down. Makes zero sense to me

Some sloppy ball use, but not unusual for a first hit out.
Pressure has been excellent.
TMac looks alive.

Skills shocking. Once again miss that critical kick that could lead to a scoring shot.

Gawn has to learn to kick for goal. Embarrassing stuff from a captain.

Choco Williams kicking training has seemingly had zero impact so far. ??

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
