Zac Taylor, this years cannons b&f winner, was one I was hoping would sneak through to our second pick. Seems to be rising up the draft boards and wouldn't even be surprised if he went first round.

I think he would compliment our midfield nicely being described as one of the best kicks in the draft (left footer) with excellent pace. While only 180cm, he has a strong contested side highlighted by his last game of the season where he picked up 37 disposals, 22 of which were contested. Would sit well on the other wing to langdon when his body is up for the rigours of afl. Wouldn't be upset if we used 17 on him.

Nice article on him below. Haven't found any highlights yet but will post when I find some.

There’s an interesting article in today’s Herald Sun that deals with how GWS are viewing the draft and how they will use their pick number 2. It names four players who are in their sights so Mac Andrew is by no means their only target.

Draft intel: Giants reveal pick two, father-son bidding plans

Paywall. Could you, or someone else who has access, mind listing the players mentioned?

I've read somewhere that Adelaide is keen on Rachele. Some things are starting to take shape. The introduction of live pick swapping makes draft predictions an absolute nightmare.

Leaving aside Andrew, I believe the other three will have plenty of suitors. From what I’m picking up, Andrew seems to have the eyes of GWS Giants and possibly Fremantle.

Zac Taylor highlights posted today. Like most other draftees, the vision is fairly limited. Seems he is comfortable off both feet but predominately a right foot kick, must have got my wires crossed there.

A good write up on him here.

Thanks Nascent.  Taylor looks a good young midfielder. Reminds me of Caleb Serong type from his draft year.  A footballer.

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Form Guide is out and what’s interesting is the evenness of the field this year beyond the top ten. If we could move our second pick up a trifle, I think we would have a very good chance of picking up a couple of handy selections.

Cal Twomey's Phantom Form Guide: Top draft prospects' October response

You do realise it's the exact same phantom form guide you posted last week?

Is it only me, but l am begging to worry about our increasing tendency to draft small players. However good Bowrie is, and he seems very good, l think you can only have 2 or 3 that size on you list, and we already have three. Zac Taylor would be another…

At this stage the teams have kept some of their thoughts on who they want close to their chest so the Phamtom Draft is only guess work and listening to some of the broadcasts Cal Twomey select players on clubs needs basis rather than who is the best available.

The draft experts in today’s Herald Sun on line edition (sorry, no link) have produced various forms of mock and phantom drafts, ranked players and now, their “consensus rankings” below. Sorry if this an ignorant question but when you are heading towards a premiership I had much less focus on the draft this year.

I imagine WA and QLD u18's played this year but Victorians would have played little in the last 2 years. Is that correct?

Re Twomey's Top 35 Phantom Draft.

These are the players he has linked to a possible Melbourne interest, in reverse ranking position as numbered:

24.  Blake Howes.  190cm mid/fwd
23.  Tom Brown.  186cm def
21.  Campbell Chesser.  186cm mid/def
19.  Sam Butler.  186cm mid/fwd
17.  Darcy Wilmot. 183cm def

He doesn't have us linked to a player higher up the order which is a surprise as it his view of ranking rather than who holds draft picks.   And we have said we want to move up the order.  But who for if we aren't linked to anyone higher up his rankings?

Nor does he have us linked as having interest in a player in the 25 to 35 range, again a surprise as we hold pick 37 so one would think there is someone there we like.

Maybe we are keeping our cards very close to our chest.  Understandably, with his track record, rival recruiter eyes would be on JT and co.  Maybe the 'move up the order' comment was a 'red herring'.

He has mentioned other clubs who have interest in the players above but interestingly he has linked Brisbane to each of those players.  The current respective draft picks are:

  • Melbourne17, 37, 49, 57, 94
  • Brisbane    14, 18, 41, 60, 76, 90

There may be a bit of cat-and-mouse late in the first round.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
