Cats have a massive advantage over most Victorian teams:

- Cheaper housing in Geelong and surrounding areas, looking at a 25% benefit, easy sell to players

- Beach and not being in city throng appeals to many players, many happy to accept less for this factor alone
- Housing & beach etc gives them a 10-20% benefit in player negotiations
- 8 games a year at Kardinia Park or whatever it’s called today

- very profitable boutique stadium funded by govt
- 8 games at MCG or Marvel so well used to both grounds

So do you think Jacks manager came  back to us after talking to Geelong, and gave them Geelongs true offer and said, match Geelongs offer and he will stay. Wow.

I suspect it's entirely possible the contract ended up being less than Geelong's offer.

There's more to Viney's decision than just money/years.

I'm talking bushwalks. Also, the biggest no no is the ink on the paper. The bottom line, is that the Murdoch papers are the equivalent of POOOO.

You'll get no argument from me regarding anything to do with that vile man. ??

Such as.........

Did you read the article?

“I love working with ‘Goody’"

“I feel like if I was to head somewhere else and end my time at the club, then I would be hanging him out to dry a bit."

“I thoroughly thought through both scenarios and came to my conclusion there is unfinished business with Melbourne Football Club."

“It is something I have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into and I do want to see it out."

“Everything is about making the Melbourne Football Club great again and successful again and that is where my ultimate fulfilment is going to come from.”

If that is all he was thinking he would not have even considered the Geelong offer. his comments on re-signing are the feel good part of the negotiations. What is it that you and others here are so scared of facing about players looking at contract offers and finding their value and team role may be less than what they thought. Good for Jack, I hope he got a good deal, I would not have given him five years. His comments on Goody are troubling, very troubling, or extremely niave.

Happy Jack has recommitted but the desire id like to see for Jack is to add more strings to the bow.

You know not getting caught in a tackle after going in headfirst, kicking and hand balling from both sides. Lastly less bleeding red and more bleeding blue, you know blue is the best chance of a flag.

Jack broke more tackles this year than any other player in the comp FWIW

Jack put himself on the market with a top line Club. They put a value on him within their system of player payments. A system that has bought them premierships and long term finals participation. We put a higher $ valuation on Jack. Time will tell which Club had the better payment system and valuation.

and what was the Geelong offer $$ and how did that compare to Melb??

It has been well reported that we gave Jack an offer, he then listened to the Cats offer. We increased our offer and he took our increased offer that was more than the Cats.

so you dont know what the offers where then

I don't really understand what the bolded bit means.

It remains the case that there's no report, rumour or any other evidence to suggest we ended up offering Viney more than what Geelong offered him, which is what you've claimed.

I've already said I wasn't sure about a 5-year deal but I'm not at all fussed about the way the negotiations played out.

Of course they don't, so they make it up to set their twisted beliefs. Not sure why some of them even support the club.

You appear to be unaware that in almost all cases a player needs to be offered a higher amount by the other club to be enticed to leave his current club.

If I come to you and say ‘my company has seen your work and we are interested in having you join us. Here is our offer’. Would you screw it up and throw it in the bin or say that’s interesting. I’ll think about it and get back to you?

I know what I’d do. I’d go to my employer and tell them I was being headhunted but I’d rather stay here.

Of course it’s never about the $$$ but to not at least look and consider what is on offer would be silly. He looked. He talked. We counter offered. He signed. Everything else is bumf.

Only read bits of the thread but FWIW, I'm glad he's staying.
Be a sad day for the club if Viney ever pulled on another clubs jumper.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
