Worst AA side ever!

AA is a farce. Has a strong element of a popularity contest. Bont and Danger have kicked some amazing goals this year, but they aren't half forwards. Position has little to do with it. They got in because they've had many good AA years and because they're too good not to be in the best 22. Hate to say it, same with Max. 

May was robbed, but given the nature of AA selection its hardly surprising.

Why is the forward line half full of midfielders who weren't good enough to make the midfield? Why aren't there actual forwards?

Dusty and Dangerfield are great footballers, but neither was worthy of All Australian selection this year. Naming them as forwards when both averaged less than a goal a game is a joke. THey're clearly in due to their names. Same goes for Gawn. I love him, but he wasn't worthy this year either. He missed games injured, and when he played he wasn't dominant. 

The team has always has some iffy selections, but you can usually justify their rationale. This year seems worse than usual in that regard.

I think it’s also interesting to note that in the 10 years between 1955 and 1964, where we won 6 premierships, we only had two AA players selected - Barassi and Dixon.  The old saying - a champion team, rather than a team of champions - would seem to have applied during our golden years.

Which I think is really relevant to us today. We have probably 6 players that are AA quality - or there abouts - yet we are a pretty ordinary team. IMO our list is not the issue - it is the managing and coaching of that list that should be our biggest priority. This is the area that we have failed badly - and where massive changes to our approach is urgently required.

Yeah I know. I was more trying to point out the criteria for the award sucks. Rowell has risen to star level already amazingly, and is clearly the best kid to come through this year. So it’ll hardly be interesting seeing him win it next year. I’d want to see the next rising star come up

Johnson would probably be there to ensure they have some indigenous representation on the Panel. I'm sure they'd rather have Goodes but he would laugh in their faces then tell them to get stuffed

I suspect Johnson is there to "represent" Queensland, just as Tredrea "represents" SA and Jackovich WA. However, it is also worthwhile having an indigenous ex-player on the list of selectors, irrespective of where they are from. 

Having said that, does Johnson still live in Qld? I have a vague memory of reading about him now living and working in Victoria.

Well done Trac! Hope there's many more to come. Well done to Max as well, bit lucky to get in but I'm more encouraged in the fact that he's become a money in the bank guy that judges probably think of first. It happens. 

Anyone else staggered that Rankine rated 4th in the rising star?  Serong I get, Anderson and King also.  Rankine is a no pressure one trick pony who kicked a few flashy goals.  Will make good teams look better, but ‘rising star’?

All Australian awards have been awarded using current format since 1991 mate, before 1991, All Australians were awarded from form in Sate of Origin matches (the carnival era from 1953-1988), not Home and Away matches.

They did have a VFL/AFL team of the Year in the 80s that finished in 1990, in 1991 the VFL/AFL Team of the Year was changed to All Australian Team of the year. Hope this makes sense ?

Further investigation on the Demonwiki site reveals that Max is actually the 5th Melbourne player to finish 6th in the Bluey and make AA in the same season.  In addition to those above, Jim Stynes was 6th in 1993 and was selected as AA Ruck, and in 2000, after a 76 goal season, Jeff Farmer also finished 6th and was named in the Forward Pocket of the AA side.  That must be some sort of a record!  Even more interestingly, in 1993, Garry Lyon also made the AA side and he finished 5th in the Bluey.

Not too fussed about the team in general. Might as well get TV week to do the voting in future, will yield the same result.
