Sorry mate, can't agree with this at all and I think you're forgetting a big percentage of staff have been stood down so the media department is currently running on fumes.

Go back and watch To Hell & Back and see what you think of our media department and 'video department'. The production, footage, direction and quality of content was top notch. The media department has been absolutely nailing it this year.

And no offence, but I don't think you understand the difference between a YouTuber and a media production department. They're not similar things. On top of that, thinking we'll outsource something as important as marketing and content production to some volunteers is pretty out of touch.

You may be living in the past mate.

Youtube leaves FTA for dead in many areas.

Anyway each to their own

BTW... how will they pay for it with a 50% drop in revenue

Not as out of touch as it sounds. I agree that the Dee's media dept is producing some outstanding work but outsourcing under the reduced soft cap is something that will only grow. Richmond have even previously used graduate students in the fitness dept as a means of outsourcing some of the data collection grunt work (although that was a few years ago the person I spoke to was involved, may not still be the case) I would hazard a guess that any university alignments will only be increased by the covid related constraints to be placed in the future.

We've previously been linked with Monash University in our "Read like a Demon" program, its something that I think would be really interesting to explore further.

FTA? Huh? To Hell & Back was hosted and posted on YouTube mate.

There will be cuts and restructuring, as there will be everywhere.

Don't really understand why you think people would volunteer to do this and why a business so dependent on marketing would outsource a key part of it to unpaid amateurs.

That's internships, most AFL (or AFLW in this case you've posted) clubs have done that for years.

Internships are a different concept to outsourcing.

I'll finish it here but if you understand the youtube algorithm you might not be so quick to judge.

Mate, I'm a senior member of a marketing department that has a massive digital presence.

The "YouTube algorithm" has nothing to do with what you're talking about with getting 'YouTubers' to create our content.

You're right about the words I've used, definitions of outsourcing often but not always imply payment and doesn't quite fit the above examples. I've brought it up as I think they fit the topic of conversation in terms of utilising unpaid labour (and I'm not suggesting it will come in the form of youtubers or well meaning forum members)

On outsourcing I'd say that there are certain functions that will be more cost effectively undertaken externally rather than in house. In other areas there is talk of some administrative functions currently undertaken on a club by club basis being brought back under an AFL umbrella. There is a drive to do more with less and it will be interesting to see how that happens.

certainly more per person with less overall people, but not more in total . reduced heads will still mean an overall reduction of function from 2019 levels.

I agree that our media department have and can do a pretty good job on the behind the scenes stuff and the associated production to cut it all together in a really professional manner.  Furthermore the behind the scenes stuff certainly isn't something you would want to farm out to well meaning amatures.

But the video footage of our Casey games and practice matches usually leaves allot to be desired.  Low zoom levels, make it almost impossible to work out who most players are etc.  I'm not sure if this is intentional or not.  I do feel the coverage of the seconds games could be greatly improved by having both a few more cameras at the ground and closing in on the shot a bit more a lot of the time.  If there were as a team of volunteers who were willing to shoot and edit up some better vision of these games, that would be great.

Something I've been wondering about this scratch match is were the potential inclusions for the Swans game managed to play lower minutes to keep them fresher for a potential call up?

They would have had an extra days break on the AFL guys, but that's still not a huge break given we also need to backup against Freo and GWS in quick succession.  Obviously guys like Harmes and Pruess didn't play at all, so it should put them in a really good position to come into the side fresh if required.

So many different elements go into the media product as a whole so I'm not going to give a blanket statement and say it's poor or it's brilliant. I think for the most part from what I've seen video content has been pretty good but with really only a basic knowledge of this area I can't really comment too much.

I think it's important to keep producing this content internally but I won't slam the idea of outsourcing if there's a possibility it can produce results. Keen to hear more from people like Lord Nev who are in the know :)

GAMEDAY: Rd 11 vs St. Kilda

It's Game Day and after 2 losses on the trot the Dees must win against the Saints today at the MCG to keep in touch with the Top 4. A loss today will see them drop out of the Top 8 for the first time since 2020.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

POSTGAME: Rd 10 vs West Coast

Many warned that this was a danger game and the Demons were totally outclassed all game by a young Eagles team at Optus Stadium in Perth as they were defeated by 35 points.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.
