solomon is a fait accompli to be back at the peptides next year you'd think

be interesting to see how deep the cuts go into footy ops

you'd think that if mahoney goes, that'll free up a lot of ' soft cap' room in the footy dept

given that our expectation is that the total numbers in the footy departments are going to be reduced in 2021 and beyond, sadly lots more good football people will lose their jobs than there will be roles to go around

If Mahoney goes, I wonder whether Richardson would be a good candidate to take the Head of FD.

Someone mentioned that Plapp was moved to forward line coach a few weeks ago. Is there any truth to this? If it is true, then clearly he's had a pretty positive impact and may well be safe for next year.

I've mentioned it a couple of times. He was introduced as forward coach by Ben Gibson in this video at 4.40:

So if Plapp is fwd line who is the midfield coach?

Looks like 'Robbing Peter to pay Paul'.

Guessing it would be Mathews?

No wonder we're a confused mess on the field. Not only do we have (IMO) a poor stable of assistant coaches, but they're seemingly moving around and have changing responsibilities.

Our website shows Matthews as the Stoppage and Contest Coach.  Sure the midfield is involved in that but what about all the other stuff like spreading, ball movement, linking with fwds and backs, positioning around the ground etc etc.

Not wishing to be pedantic but like you I'm confused.

I hope the fwd coaching role is not indicative of what is happening in our coaching group.  Firstly we have no-one and had no-one on Goodwin's staff who have played fwd.  Between 2017 and 2019 they shuffled assistants in and out of the fwd coach role.  As part of the last years coaching overhaul they decided to not have a fwd coach at all!!  (Ben Gibson's reference aside our website does not show anyone as the fwd coach).   All of a sudden in 2020 when our fwd line is still dysfunctional they decide we need a fwd coach so apparently they hand it over to Plapp leaving a hole in the midfield coaching job.

Hard to believe it wasn't obvious that we needed a fwd coach when they did the FD/coaching overhaul at EOS.

Mathews is the midfield coach to my understanding. So instead of having stoppages and contest coach, it's just a midfield coach, which to me, makes sense.

Not sure that it does.

Stoppages happen all over the ground and at times it is non-midfielders who attend.  To my mind set-ups, ball release and spread from stoppages involves lots of players.  eg our set-ups for stoppages would be different if the stoppage is in our fwd half or back half and different again on how close the stoppage is to any set of goals.

And 'contest' coaching is applicable to all players not just midfield.

I could go on but you get my drift.

Yeah I'm just guessing. It's the only 'logical' explanation I can think of tbh. Not great.

Plapp moved to forward coach a few weeks ago? If that's the case we really seem to love this shuffling of the deck chairs mid season trick don't we.

This was made in response to Max Rooke being stood down in May.

In my mind, if you're attending a stoppage, you're playing in the midfield. Doesn't matter where you are on the ground. Therefore, stoppage work is applicable to being in the domain of the midfield coach no matter where on the ground the contest is taking place. Each to their own though, mate. :)

Is Alan Richardson an assistant coach or is he some kind of mentor for Goodwin?  Whats his official job title?

No idea why we got him...   he gave off Neeld vibes when at the Saints.

I was told by membership while they were phoning me in reply to one of my email rants about their wretched displays last year  , that plainly  Goody needed help in the box . And that they were looking around . Lo and behold Richardson was taken on a week later .

I think this a rule now to enable asst coaches not required next year to be able to start looking for a new job, rather than wait till end of season.

Fair to all probably.

Correct...the date was usually in August before the end of the home and away and required a club to inform the assistant coaches if they were being renewed.

This year I assume the date has been pushed to now.

Traditionally all contracts ran IIRC to end October including for players.

Not sure what rules there are for public announcements...

We definitely need a clean out of our assistant coaches.

However, the main person I would love to have take over as head of development is Mark "Choco" Williams. He would be excellent and is just the type of good quality football person we need at the Melbourne Football Club.

Player development is a crucial factor we need to invest more in with our football department.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in
