Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer.

What I'm saying is, if we're in such a poor financial situation; what are the realistic ramifications from a football department point of view if we don't meet the expectations he has set?

To use a crude example, if the season is judged as a failure due to the coaching, how can we possibly afford to pay out Goodwin's contract? I just wonder if the expectations actually have any teeth given the financial implications.

Right, I understand.

I suppose the question is how impactful is our financial position on our footy (e.g. how, if at all, does it impact training?).

You softies!! Where is your journalistic integ.... oh it’s just a footy forum.

Ps I do hope you at least gave his feet a tickle.

I guess what I meant to convey is that we will ask questions but we will take his answers on face value we're not going to "A Few Good Men" him as some on here seem to want.

Given Mr Bartlett has said today on SEN that the "expectation is to play finals" in the same interview where the club has pleaded for financial donations, what are the ramifications if we don't meet expectations?

Nope.

https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/735403/we-don-t-use-covid-19-as-an-excuse-bartlett

“We rolled out some club values at the start of the year and some expectations, and one of them is that we’re not going to use COVID-19 as an excuse”

“Our expectation is to play finals.

“We set out a strategic plan at the start of the year for the next four years and that plan hasn’t been altered.

“We can still absolutely assess the performance on and off the field - the performance of our coaching group, our playing group, everyone across the club.

“Absolutely you need to take into account the circumstances we’ve faced, but also how we’ve dealt with those challenges and circumstances.”

I read this as an admission by the club that our response to COVID is where we can, and should, be analysed (i.e. rather than saying "COVID means this season's a write off", we need to accept COVID changes things but grade our performance based on how we adapt).

What he's actually saying, if I read the articles correctly (I didn't hear the interview), is that we've decided to ask our supporters for donations and if we can get $1M in donations by the end of the year, we won't need to rely on an AFL assistance.

That, to me, is not an unreasonable financial decision. If we have a wealthy supporter base, why not try to tap into that before we have to go to the AFL?

I also don't think that's inconsistent with us saying we should still be playing finals.

I heard the interview and thought he presented well.

We don't hear a lot of him and I guess that's not a bad thing overall...we don't need dial a quote Jeff or Eddie everywhere.

It would be good to hear from him just a little more though. Particularly when big issues arise.

It also seems we're not in as bad a financial position as many have painted.

He said the balance sheet was strong and if as you've both said if we can raise a mill we won't need to borrow from the AFL.

We've been around for 160 years and intend to be around for another 160 years and beyond.

He also talked about the future of the AFL and a new team in Tassie and the overall strength of the competition going forward.

Rather than less teams we will maybe look at 2 more or even 4 more clubs over the next 20 plus years (don't remember the time frame).

In other words said Jeff was talking through his a....

As for performance, he said our goal was to make finals...it didn't seem like one of those just sayin' goals but a legitimate and expected goal.

I would say Goody and the FD would have a lot of questions to answer if we don't.

On another issue, said the club are fully behind Nev to a person and doing everything they can do to stamp out the poor race based behaviour of faceless fans.

Can I just call this out?

@Demonland and others go to significant effort to run the podcast and to get someone as important as Bartlett as a guest.

This isn't a hard-hitting investigative piece of journalism, it's an online forum.

How about, if you want to ask the club a question, you do it, and otherwise don't [censored] and moan about questions possibly not being asked of Bartlett tonight.

Sadly I cannot tonight tU about to be locked up and with my Grand daughters tonight for the last time in 4 weeks and believe it or not they are more important to me than the MFC. I will listen later tonight or tomorrow. Yes I know what tonight is and I will be keen to see if hard questions are asked. I still stay with my statement that MFC members are too polite.

Thank you. Happy with the outcome. We asked all the questions we wanted. If people aren't happy that we didn't dig hard enough well all I can say is they can start their own podcast.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
