How moronic are so many players of both sides not merely shaking hands after the siren but embracing. 
I wonder if they understand that the reason there are no spectators are exactly the same as should have them bring more restrained.

They were doing it all night. Not good optics when we're trying to educate society and kids to distance.

It will mean that inevitably a player somewhere will get the Mexican beer bug and the whole competition will have to shut down.

It's hard to control in the moment celebrations and all that but after the game surely they can have a little bit of control.

No crowd was fine, people worrying about it too much.

Geez Nick Reiwolt isn't a fan of Clarry. 

Not having a VFL is going to be hard for players coming in to replace injured players.

I wonder whether to make up for it they will do some kind of scratch match every week between the teams. Obviously very difficult to compare but then again if positions are on the line you would hope they would go all guns blazing.

Optics of a handshake might not be great, however it's probably the most sanitary thing they've done all night after manhandling, breathing and sweating on each other for 100 odd minutes. The damage would've been done. 

Not wanting them to shake hands out of concern of transmission in this scenario is kind of like putting on a condom after intercourse.

My thoughts after the game are for the seagulls who won’t get their feed of discarded chips tonight. Poor things stayed up late for nothing.

 If a player was to contract the virus from close contact with other players, then that would mean a player that already had the bug, was playing ?

Our local league football presidents have met (YJFL) and said the AFL can't tell them what to do. They are being guided by the chief health officer brett sutton who says community sport can continue. Good on them. They are planning to start the comp on May 3. Same with VAFA and NFL, EFL and more.

Tonights game was a big success.

All  afl players played all of their junior and nab /tac cup games in front of (next to) no one...that is probably 10 years of footy in empty grounds....before they made the big time. No big deal.

More than likely that one at least of the (?) 650 is at very least an asymptomatic carrier.

The current known incidendence is probably something like 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 50,000, so the odds are still fairly well on their side at present I would have thought.  Victorian's arn't as diseased as those filthy cockroaches or Queeeeenslander's either.

The players are each comming into contact with 30 - 40 people every week that are way more segregated from the general population than the average Joe.  Kids at primary school would have just as much if not more social contact than your average AFL footballer.  Nurses still to work, people are still catching public transpor, people still mix at supermarkets and other public places to a degree and not all will practice good hygienic.  The social distancing is about reducing public interaction, not eliminating it all together.

I'm personally pretty cautious and non-complacent about this whole COVID think that's getting around, but some people do need to take a bit of a cold shower about it.

Without a crowd the game is completely unwatchable imo, absolutely hollow feeling for a neutral supporter. The AFL needs to pull the pin and just wait till crowds can come back. If that doesn’t happen this year so be it.

The same teams have played the opening game for how many years now?

...and how many of those games have been watchable?

If the AFL need to pull any pin, it's the idea that this should be the opening game.

Yes, and they are going up rapidly here too.  It's the whole expodential growth thing, but it probably has some latency built into it as well, from the incubation period preceding when the greater restrictions were put in on the general population. 

But the AFL players were also somewhat quarantined two weeks prior to the rest of us before it became cool to be distant and as such the incidence in the AFL player cohort 'should' be even lower than the Aus general population.  22 blokes mix with 22 other blokes for ~120mins every week.  It's not like they are having a religious gathering of 16,000 together every week or anything.

Anyways, we'll all see in due course I guess.  I'm kinda over the whole thing and it's only really been around a fortnight to a month since it's been that heavily on anyone's radar.  BTW, it's been on my radar since early Jan/mid when an ex-colleague came back from Wuhan a day or so before they shut down the place.  He certainly didn't go to Christmas Island or the NT isolation either, just a few weeks of home isolation as a precaution, before the alarm bells rang in the federal government and they thought they should do something about things.  Probably plenty of other escapees before him as well.
