I think these comments are totally unacceptable by an old [censored] and by a club president makes it even worse.

Who are you to judge someone if they don’t think it is worth them putting themselves in danger for a game “with a valid reason”. F off!

I would be in the minority but I can see where Derm is coming from here. Unless you have a reason such as caring for a loved one. I think you are obligated to join the hub as an AFL player.

the Vic players are escaping the virus zones by leaving so it should be safer for them.

With us moving to Sydney and now (presumably) not going to play at the MCG again, probably for the rest of the season, we won't be getting the MCG money now - how much of a bigger dent will that put in our finances??

Is there a chance Viney elects not to go to NSW? Haven’t seen it discussed, but his wife just gave birth. Good chance he stays behind

Pert was on SEN this afternoon and he talked about the possibility of some family members going into the hub.

The money was a strange round robin in that the AFL paid the MCC for leasing the MCG on the condition that the MCC paid the home clubs.

As the MCC will be used less I assume the AFL will pay less and the money is still there.(how we get it is the question)

10 years ago DD I would have been the same. I guess I’m mellowing and I think making people feel like they have go/play otherwise they’ll be ostracised, abandoned or looked down on if they don’t feel safe playing a game is not acceptable. Seriously who gives a ....

My thoughts were before this but we have our youngest 2nd birthday this weekend. We have just had two of our closest family members call us to say they can’t come because they have been tested for CV today.
A teacher and Police officer, footy doesn’t really rate.

Spot on. If Viney chose to stay home with his new born my opinion of him would rise. It’s only a game folks.

If they agreed to no pay probably. But I guess they could day this not in the contract I sign up to. Interesting! After 30 seconds thinking I would be not as supportive.

the general employment rule is that you cannot be asked to go interstate. Many employment contracts have clauses saying you may be required to travel from time to time which varies this. Few contracts have a compulsory relocation contract.

Five weeks in a hub would almost certainly be a breach of contract so the player would be entitled to full payment.

Lever and T Mac also have babies born in the last six months.  Others have young families with two or three pre-school kids.

I would guess they will go for this round of games which will be for three weeks.  They can then opt to come back and sit out the next round of hub games.  And they have the option of taking their family with them.

Or, if it all gets too hard for their family they can drop out of the hub at any time.

Also, the AFL has flagged there will be a 'pause' at some stage when all Vic teams come home.

Of course things change quickly so who knows.

Edit:  We fly out later today: clubs-begin-to-leave-victoria

Has it been said anywhere yet whether we will be taking the full squad of players vs a smaller group, similar to what Port have done?

Mahoney mentioned on Friday that there arguments for and against each strategy and that they'd be making the call yesterday.

Leaving tonight? So the players have been preparing to leave All weekend, I expect they will be completely unfocused on today’s game then. We really have been dudded during this period

NSW has closed the border to all Victorians effective midnight tomorrow night.  Closed to all Melbournians midnight tonight.

The AFL had planned to 'pause' the season after round 10 and bring Vic teams home.

The season post round 10 is in serious jeopardy.

Can all the teams just stay in the hubs, for the rest of the season?

Only 12 games to go (13 for us!) and they could squash that into say 10 weeks if they put on a few mid week games.

Things could improve again in a few weeks but if they don't wants the AFL's backup plan!?

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
