Poor AFL just got reminded they arn't above the law,  by all accounts SA would have come to the party if the AFL discussed it with them.  But being the arrogant organisation they are they just assumed it would work out the way they wanted.

 

A good return to earth moment for the AFL,  in a couple of weeks SA will let them have the exemptions, just making them sweat a bit.

    What a mess... can't even get the training protocols in line let alone playing matches.

    AFL must be tempted to say.. everyone in Melbourne for the foreseeable future and we will review after six weeks.

    Otherwise it's a hub in Melbourne and a hub in Sydney or Brisbane for all interstate teams. That gets you seven weeks of matches before any team is required to move.

    Time to solve this fiasco. Gil... you are paid to lead.. there comes a time when consultation has to stop

    Do you really think the AFL haven't been in consultation with all state health departments?

    in reality probably not. To go to five states while you were working out the detail plus potentially Tasmania and NT would have been a nightmare.

    Sure they would have been working with Victoria on a model protocol which they would have then shared with the other states.They would have also been guided by the agreed NRL protocol.

    Also I would not want to spend 3 hours on a plane,  with someone who might/might-not,  be about to become A symptomatic.   Going over there or back again.

    Bring them East to settle for a bit,  and shorter/quicker travels, to & fro games.

And now he’s having a sook because no one’s buying it. If he just made FIFO exemptions for AFL teams (and SA), everything would be hunky-dory; but no, he wants to play brinkmanship. While they’ve been open the whole time for hundreds of FIFO mining and defence workers. What a fool- he’s now essentially forcing his two state teams into a situation they don’t want.

    I agree with him...

    The AFL talk a level playing field.

    Then they need to create a hub in a neutral region with all clubs in it together.

    Personally though I don't see the season being completed...

    No, I don't think he sees football as being his major objective even though he's had a shot at the AFL.

    He's thinking of the health and wellbeing of his citizens over the AFL.

    Good for him.

    I mean who would trust a bunch of footballers to abide by the rules????

    Just curious if people are actually looking forward to the footy coming back this year? Right at the moment I really couldn’t give a stuff about this year and the thought of watching Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond every week for the next five years is also sickening.

    Travy14 I think SA would be in if the stupid Adelaide players hadn't broken the quarantine rules. All Marshall is doing is punishing the Adelaide clubs. I say self inflicted wounds.

    On the other hand in WA, McGowan is setting out to prove what many really think about him.

      Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
