The UK totally misread how to handle the situation and are now having to change tact. They've handled it differently to Australia.

Schools will likely close at some stage, but the unanimous advice from the actual experts (and not Demonland posters) is that we're better off with them open currently. One of the main reasons is that if 4 million school kids are sent home it will have a devastating effect on the amount of people available to work in crucially needed jobs right now, including health professionals. It will also likely mean those school kids will be cared for by vulnerable grandparents.

Not everything is as simple as you like to make it out to be mate.

I know the reasoning for keeping schools open. Parents who are health workers etc.

But cases are now being found in younger children. One of the reasons the UK is closing them tomorrow

I have been watching the BBC world service for about 5 weeks now

It has only just begun

A well considered comment...not.

How about you make a constructive comment for once rather than just snipe everyone else on the site.

Take what I said to pieces, do your best.

Careful... you’ll get an invite “to catch up for a coffee”.

Yeah, why would the PM of the country need health experts with PHDs when he could have SWYL from the internet who has watched some BBC lately...

I'm no ScoMo or religion fan, but his is where his medical advisers were the last decade or so while you were getting your 5 week intensive medical degree via BBC World...

I don’t quite get your point.
Yesterday in the UK it was discovered that younger school age kids are getting very sick. It’s not just old people.
so Shools will close in the UK indefinitely.

Meanwhile Last weekend Morrison is at the Hillsong Convention with 1000’s of people doing his thing.
Pentacostals believe they are immune from this interruption

It's BS they're more worried about the impact on the economy than the availability of health care workers. You can't negotiate with a virus, you can't bargain and wait it out til the school holidays. Incompetent buffoons in charge everywhere who know nothing except their neo-liberal ideologies and worship of the marketplace. But at least Scotty has some stern words for those acting like idiots, I'm sure they'll listen.

Workmate's wife is a principle of a public school. He told me that her school just signed off (set up) on a system for online teaching with teachers and the education department and are now ready for the shift. Every school (public and private) is going through this process as we speak. Expect schools to close very soon.

You're more of a masochist than I thought! 5 weeks of the BBC World Service. True, it's great for 30 minutes, then they just keep repeating the same stories, over and over.

Bit like some Demonland posters, actually.

Not sure why you're bringing up Hillsong etc. other than to try and move the goal posts. Unless you're implying all the doctors and professors providing advice are also Pentecostals and have decided to put religion above science in their jobs?

I said: Medical professionals, the best ones in Australia, have recommended it's best for schools to stay open for now.

You said: But I've watched BBC World for a few weeks so I know better than them.

But somehow you don't see how absurd that is.

@Lucifer's Hero

 Quoting post #900

I sincerely hope they deal with these people appropriately Luci, they are a major part of this shi*tshow, excuse the language. Very saddened to hear good people are losing their small business and some families are already struggling with losses of income, yet my place of employment has been forced to go the other way due to this panic and hoarding.

Basically, I’m in supply chain for a major supermarket. Our distribution centres are experiencing demand volumes never seen before and quite frankly, we can’t get the stock out to supermarkets fast enough. So now, we are open 24/7 and about to start hiring to help us with the pressure. Over 500 employees in our DC and some are working extremely long hours to ensure all stock gets out as quickly as possible.

We are a selfish race at the worst of times and I have no idea when things will get better. Again, stay safe ‘Landers.

It's very easy for people to say 'lets close schools', but the reality is our healthcare system and our economy are both under great duress.

Some of us don't have the luxury of working from home, and we have small businesses which employ people. If the kids don't go to school, we have two options, close our business (so 6 people lose their livelihood, including ourselves), or have their 70 year old grandparents look after them.

This is just us, but what about nurses? doctors? people working in food production? pharmaceuticals?

If you close schools now, you are looking at prolonged closures, job losses, a greater hit to our economy and increased pressure on our already struggling health care system.

Kids are the least vulnerable to this disease, and while there is a  risk of infection within families, and while I applaud teachers for risking their own health, right now, this is the best option for the greater good.

Schools are being extra cautious and have cancelled all incursions, excursions, assemblies etc.

Everyone is doing their best in what is a very difficult time. The less armchair experts get involved, and sprout unnecessary fear and panic, the better.

P.S.- if you can, please support small businesses during this time. A lot won't survive this otherwise.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
