It's not so much about the state...

It's well known that contested ball winners are more likely to make it at AFL level.

Despite what many complain about on here on here about drafting contested ball winners, it is the smart option.

The highlights show lots of nice stuff but I don't remember seeing him win any contested ball.

I think the consensus on here is we go for Young at 3, he can zone off for the cheap kick and also win his own ball on the ground and in the air. I would rather we take that type of player.

Outside runners from SA, who was the last really successful one of those...Craig Bradley?

I wanted to check if he met the magical 30% contested ball percentage and he does

National champs: 32 of 94 = 34%
SANFL: 80 of 244 =33%
SANFL ressies: 38 of 64 = 59%

Moon you do realise those that are against him being selected will completely ignore what you just posted andย keep up the barage that he is no good on the inside, too skinny etc etc.

Jared Polec, Shane Edwards, Brodie Smith, Wayne Milera, Hamish Hartlett and could make an argument for a young Shaun Burgoyne.

Stephensโ€™ย is a country Victorian whoโ€™s played senior footy - in the Bush and at league level, did he suddenly get soft because he boarded in Adelaide not Shepp like Clayton Oliver or Caulfield like James Jordon?

The height is a valid concern, I like mids who are 6โ€™2 rather than barely 6โ€™. Makes an important difference for versatility and ball winning, but if you play like Richmond and run run run it doesnโ€™t matter.ย

Why did Toumpas and Trengove fail - because they couldnโ€™t run. This kid can seriously run and the tackles and contested ball percentages are good. Heโ€™ll start on the outside but heโ€™s 18! Let him win more contested ball when heโ€™s 23.

Edwards is the only premiership player there in the first list and he's inside and out...

Burgoyne, let's not make the argument. He's a gun inside and out as a premiership player.

I haven't seen anything of Stephens bar his highlights (I'm not saying he's soft by the way), the club would have a good insight.

If he can win hard inside ball to go with his outside ability then good.

...but I would be wary of rating himย on SANFL form, it's a very openย style of footy they play.

Again, I'm sure the club are aware of this...

I find Stevens' highlights difficultย to rate. Certainly breaks lines and has skills, but he won't get anywhere near as much time and space at AFL level, and he doesn't appear to be super clean in the contest. Good players his size have serious tricks -ย he strikes me as a flashier ANB type.

Unless we draft him of course, in which case I'll believe he's Robbie Flower reincarnated. At this stage I'd prefer others.

We leak? Or the media leaks?

A passing mention by Taylor in a podcast is hardly a leak.

Taylor has specifically said he will not reveal the list of draftees they have rated.

Depends who we end up taking I guess.

The only ones we have been linked to in a big way in the media are Jackson and Weigtman.

Taylor confirmed our interest in Jackson when asked directly and all he really said was that he was one we were looking at and that we had done a lot of work on him.

The link to Young is only because phantom draft experts have him around our pick and the fans on here are frothing over his highlights (admittedly, me included).

I feel that we have an opportunity to pick up really good players at 3 & 8. But I don't think they are the superstars like in previous years. I don't think there is a Clayton Oliver level player at pick 3 this year which is a shame. Maybe Kemp?

We don't need superstars. We need solid players with speed and elite disposal who can play 200 games for the club.

Not just Toumpas 'BAMF'...as 'Skuit' mentions above but there are more.

Hmm... I was going to say that I never rated Aish and that he was more of a Toumpas style too. Then I looked up height and weight from draft years. Aish has put on 1kg since being drafted.ย

I then looked up Bernie Vince as this is who Stephens reminded me of but he is much taller and has much more size. I think you have just turned me off taking him.

This is the key point - not whether he's inside or outside.ย

Watch a game of NTFL and you'd think they're all prodigies.ย

SANFL is not open. ย They are generally a slog fest.ย 6 goals each is not uncommon! A couple of 4 goals each last season. ย Open games are the exception.ย

Could we not say the same about all the players in the draft.ย

Who was the last player from our team to get the ball from the stoppage and burst inside fifty to kick a goal? So what if he was third in the chain of possessions, thatโ€™sย his role and he nails it. He manages to find himself in the right spot on numerous occasions and uses the ball well by foot. I hope weโ€™re looking at him at pick 8 should he still be available.

The way he accelerates whilst bouncing the ball really impresses me. Some very nice goals in that vision.ย

Look forward to seeing a bit more vision when released in the next week or soย

Not sure he'd have anywhere near that space and time at AFL level. But yes, he'd be aย great option at 8. Has a lot of class.

For me Moonie itโ€™s not aย case of is he more of an inside or outside player, but that heโ€™sย is a player that wants to take the game on and takes ownership of it. Weโ€™veย ย had players in recent years that pass offย when running inside fifty rather than take the shot, team rule or afraid of missing? Players having set shots on goal, twenty to thirty metres out with little angle, trying to kick around their body only to miss. Itโ€™s almost as if some players donโ€™t want the responsibility.ย

True, but the ridiculous skills on display in that vision are all under virtually non-existent pressure. I'd like to see more evidence that he can be clean around congestion, win his own ball and bury someone in a tackle.ย

Yes, I'm still feeling burned by every outside mid we've drafted this decade that looks similarly Burgoyne-eskeย in 3 minute videos.ย

And yes, I am basing my highly uninformed opinion onย a couple of meaningless highlight videos.ย

Wouldn't be disappointed if we drafted him, I'd just prefer others at this stage.ย

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
