What I found interesting is it says GWS have been linked to him with a top ten pick. This must mean they still think they are a chance to draft him before Green

GWS would only be taking him before Green if they get the opportunity to do so which means they would have to trade their pick 6 to Melbourne for 3. They had their chance to do this during the trade period when they could have offered a player as part of the deal. This is now highly unlikely and GWS doesn’t appear to have the necessary currency to do this now. If Melbourne nominates Tom Green, I  can’t see GWS passing on him for Jackson.

Would have a good ring to it to draft “Young & Jackson” I must admit

The Chloe combo!

I've been trying to figure out who GWS are after - given the effort and manoeuvring. Whoever it is, I hope we get him! Their recent draft selections speak for themselves.

I think it might be Hayden Young. To replace Heath Shaw at half back

Imo Jackson is a good young ruck and probably will go pick 10 to Freo. Maybe they’ll grab Robertson at 7 or 10.

TBH, again only from limited highlights and comments, I could live with Young and Jackson, if Kemp is gone, as Young just looks super impressive and Jackson appears to have enough skill to play a key forward role, while he learns the trade from Max.

That would give us the 3rd key forward and adding Joel Smith to the mid size forwards we cover that area.

Also, if Bradtke kicks on, he could become another key forward option in time.

That means rookies and last pick or two, look for a small forward or two.

I wonder if that is where you could use a Bennell, with great hands, obvious talent and afl experience, playing forward, he would have less running to do and could be a viable cheap option as a small forward.

That is why if you wanted Kemp you would talk to Freo and tell them if they took Kemp and you knew who they wanted, say Jackson, you would take him.

Then without swapping picks you could nearly get your player.

The danger for Kemp does appear to be the Swans, though they would be passing a couple of ready to go, good players, if they took him.

He looks like a horrible kick, but wouldn't be the first ruckman to kick like a mule.

Agree. Some reckon he might be a key forward but I’m not keen

I think Freo will need 10, possibly 7, for a Henry bid match

Can't say I agree with this..

@CalTwomey
on what the Dees will do with pick three:

"The more people you speak to and hear from about this pick think Luke Jackson is right in the mix...they do say this guy is a special talent, he's a Brodie Grundy type of ruckman."

He also went on to say to say that Jackson could play forward straight away, and potentially have a bigger impact than Weideman immediately.

I didn't hear the interview TK. Do I will go bsck later and havr a listen. Seems like Cal Twomey had big wraps on him?

He didn't say much more than that mate. It was more about what he was hearing on Jackson than what he actually thought. Cal said that Luke is a special talent, but that he wouldn't take a ruck with a top ten pick. Twomey has him at 14 in his phantom draft.

Perhaps a ploy to raise the eyebrows of Freo, in a bid to secure picks 7 and 10 for our no 3...

It's going to be a long month.

That wouldn't be too difficult!

Bad plan in my opinion relying solely on McDonald and Wied so worthy of consideration

Club is very keen on Jackson.

Word is he could very well lineup as a forward in round 1 should we land him.

Not sure if it's part of a pick split plan or not, but this is a very very real possibility.

If hes good enough to get drafted and play KPF at AFl level immediately,   he is a forward not a ruckman.

If hes a KPF and as good as everyone is saying, hes should be clear favorite for pick 3.    Always take a KPF over a half back flanker.

We do need another big forward, but this guy is going to take 3 years minimum to make a real big impact. I will be FILTHY if we ignore what we need so desperately, skill, poise and pace off half back. its right there for us, we desperately need skill in the side. if we pas sup Young then i will be seriously disillusioned with my club.

But should the draft strategy be need > talent? If Jackson turns out to be the best player in the draft on reflection and they didn’t take him because they drafted for need I would be more critical of them.
This is hopefully the last time our own pick is this low in a draft for a long while.

Yeah I just watch his highlights,

No chance that kids playing AFL round 1, and hes definitely not a forward

Id argue that Young is almost the perfect pick, he is a top 5 talent and he is what we need.

This is the thing, Young plays R1 and is almost our best by foot, his impact is immediate, it has flow on affect, it releases Salem which adds another class player to the mid, takes pressure of Hibbo and Nev, they can just lock down a bit more. Lever intercepting and giving off to a guy that can pin point a 40m kick on his left out of the danger zone. Thats gold right there.

will he be another homesick at his prime?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
