One of the Sams on SEN a short time ago continuing on with Todd leaving us but no further info into his future.

I thought I also heard him say this will be our last coaching/FD change heading into 2020. I might have heard wrong though as there were a couple of ‘cheerful’ school kids in the car. Anyone else hear it this morning?

Have heard there will be a departure announcement today, assuming it's Viney but don't know specifics.

I would be surprised if it was the last change though as apparently the review has been pretty brutal. That's just gut feel though, haven't heard how many more changes there will be.

Have to say its the right time for these changes, I love Todd what he has done, represents a great part of the the MFC and a great family legacy which is really nice for the club, but nothing lasts forever.

The next question surely has to be about the replacements? who will they be, has the talk gone cold on Ooze and when is the time to define Alan Richardson's role? must be getting closer?

Interesting times.

The club hasn't said anything yet (which I find weird), but Richardson chose us over Essendon due to Essendon not offering a senior assistant type of role, so would make sense that he took the Dees job because that was on offer.

Of course, there's the potential that he's also got some kind of list management involvement and that's why it wasn't announced yet seeing Todd is still there at this stage.

I find the Richardson situation bizarre and poorly communicated to be honest. The club and Alan know what his role is, he would've been offered something to consider and make a decision, why the club isn't telling members/supporters is a bit weird. He didn't just come onboard and find out his role later.....

yeah i hope you are right LN with the waiting on Todd departure, but again, its just a bit unprofessional in my opinion, and i might be wrong, but it seems like its just not been communicated well at all. But that's a bit of Demonitis coming out in me.

What's the rush?

I mean im all for transparency and good comms but their review is still going, and the dust is still settling from the departures, so I assume the full scope of his role is yet to be nailed down.

So it would be silly to make some announcement about his title and resposibilities ahead of that.

And to what end? To appease a few dees fans who are worried about the lack of clarity about his role?

I imagine it hasn’t been communicated yet, because there are other positions to be decided on. I’m sure that once the board has the FD personnel all in place, they will make their announcement. Obviously, the board felt that had to move quick to get Richardson, so that announcement would have been unavoidable.

Agree with why Richardson chose Dees.

Re list management - I hope not!.  The Saints list management during his tenure was woeful.  And the list is still not in good shape.  Richardson was either not in the process (most unlikely as head coach) or wears a significant part of the responsibility.

For mine it is time the club found staff who have AFL expertise in their job eg an experienced forward coach, and experienced defence coach and an experienced List Manager.  We have had too many coaches with training wheels who learn on the job at the mfc.

Yeah I'm not advocating for Richo to be in that role, just having a guess as to why it hasn't been formally announced yet what role he will have. Would rather have one person per role personally, but you never know what will happen now with the soft cap I guess.

Yep i tend to agree. Also did anyone read the article on Craig Lambert across  the weekend..  we could do worse than to sound him out, he is a relationship builder, a conduit between family and the FD,  a culture builder.

If there are some elements of the club that are divided as its been mentioned (who knows??) then it might pay to look at how they can be bought closer..

just a suggestion, but  i certainly agree it is time for experience and especially a forward coach who will coach the forwards..

Nah, it's very bizarre. Would you take on a job not knowing what it was? Never. It actually doesn't even phase me really, because I know Goodwin won't listen to Richardson from what I gather.

I suspect the inner sanctum of the Board/Executive/Richardson knew the role but needed to allow some to leave first to free up the responsibilities before announcing a role for Alan that intuitively means a number of others will be moved/or move on.

No its not.  Richardson knows the job. I like the way the club is so far handling outcomes of review.

I'm happy to wait for AGM and a full report

Just because you don't know what his role is, doesn't mean Ricahrdson doesn't know what his role is. My guess is they're waiting for the whole team to be settled and determined before making announcements. That's the way it should be done.

We need to understand that the review is ongoing, or in the very least, has been finalised in the last week. We don't know what Richardson's roll is because most likely he will be filling a position still held at the club.

Note: He may not be replacing someone that is going to be sacked. Rather once the personnel are finalised, there will be a final shuffle of positions.

Of course he knows, or at least the general scope. And I'll bet london to a brick he knows the salary.

My guess is that richo himself will have a fair say in what his responsibilities are and what his role will be.

They wanted him, wanted to ensure another club didn't grab him and I have little doubt part of the pitch was to create a win win scenario. We get his expertise and he gets, within parameters, scope to focus on what he is most interested in.

Given things are still somewhat fluid I see it a massive vote of confidence in the fd and tbe club that he went with us or didn't just say let's wait a while.

Agree binman but never forget you cannot keep everyone happy. Some supporters will always want instant action even though it is only early September.

You're all just guessing without knowing facts and putting far too much faith in the failed Mahoney and the controlling Pert. Are the decisions the right ones? Jennings is highly praised across the industry, McCartney also. When does Josh fall on his own sword? Goodwin is the poorest tactical game day coach in the league and these clowns signed him up before the start of this season? Trust them if you wish to, but they'd want to deliver in 2020.

So, based on your assessment above, you assume that Goodwin was the sole reason for the year we had this year? So, are you saying that Goodwin was the sole reason for our performance last year? I would be more concerned if there were no changes after the year we've had. But to assume that Goodwin is the reason, and to say that none of the blame be put on McCartney's or Jennings' Shoulders is stupid. The coaching roll McCartney had completely changed at mid year, and there was some noticeable improvement in the area he left.

The same issues were all there last year, just people decided to drink the koolaid. I didn’t notice improvement, but I did see it deteriorate. Also I have said right from the start that injuries and no preseason were our biggest problem, since then Goodwin has also admitted fault in himself.

Serious Question

Where was the improvement in the 2nd half of the year ( not just the odd stat) but real improvement, because I didn’t see it.

and that does concern me at this stage

Improvement in terms of structure. It was Skills and having No Key Forward that Ultimately let us down in the end.

I reckon you just might be doing a little bit of that yourself along with the rest of the posters on this site, with the exception of swyl { sorry swyl but I just had to throw that in.}

Still looked like 1 in all in to me. Very little structure

Lack of skills at AFL Level is inexcusable, and this is the main thing i will be watching next year

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
