The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy

Featured Replies

Food for thought.  With GC coming out and saying their first two picks are on the table what about a Bradshaw or Petracca plus pick 3 for the GC picks 1and 2?  We talk about wanting to be a force for five plus years.  Getting the best two kids in this year's draft who also happen to be mates and Melbourne boys may assist in us doing that.

Definitely up for trading Bradshaw.

Not stoked by the notion of losing those two. If it’s true that AB was carrying a back injury through most of the season, hopefully next year he regains his form and then some. We’re all hoping CP is going to have a breakthrough year next year, and it would be preferable for him to have it in a Demons guernsey.

The hardest part with these trades is convincing a good player to want to go to a club like Gold Coast.  We had Howe all set to head the the GC for pick 7, he then realised what he was in for and went to Collingwood for a fraction of the money.

Adelaide are in the position of one of their best players (and possibly his brother) being willing to make the move up north.

I wouldn't be comfortable trading a Brayshaw away for a top two pick.  We've put so much work into these guys that trading one away for someone who is, while highly rated, still no guarantee at making it at the top level, would be silliness on our part.

We need to worry about our pick and how we can turn into something positive - if we take it to the draft then that's fine, but we're in a great position to turn it into something more.  That should be our focus.

But they're private schoolboys.  Can't have that!

Yeah, what's Bradshaw ever done for us?

What's the source for this? I haven't heard anywhere that GCS are willing to part with their top two picks...

If GC trade either of Pick 1 or 2.

They should pack up and fold...

I can’t believe Cameron has even suggested it.

Rowell & Anderson ??wtf#

Gold Coast’s GM of List & Strategy Craig Cameron has declared picks No.1 and 2 aren’t off the table, but it would take something “extraordinary” to move them on.

The Suns will have the first two selections in this year’s draft as part of the AFL’s rescue package to help the struggling club.

Oakleigh Chargers pair Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson remain likely to join Gold Coast with the opening two picks, but Cameron is open to trading the prized selections for the right player.

“They (picks 1 and 2) aren’t off the table,” Cameron told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“The players at the top of this year’s draft I think are exceptional players, so it would take something extraordinary to move those selections. But it would be silly of us to say they’re off the table."

Thanks mate. So it's a puff-piece that he has to answer.

Yeah pretty stock standard answer I would have thought. Hard to see them giving up this year's draft opportunity.

Tongue in cheek.

We should definitely refrain from trading Brayshaw as we stand to gain far more by keeping him. His value at the moment would be rubbish, whereas if he can regain last years form next season he'll literally transform our midfield.

Fyfe to Suns plus change... Freo rebuild well underway..?

Viney should be traded first, but I wouldn't say no to trading Gus if we got the right deal back. We need to balance our midfield a bit more.

If we traded Gus to Freo for Cerra (shout out to @Pennant St Dee), we'd have Oliver, Harmes, Petracca, Cerra and Salem supported by the outside run of Langdon and Tomlinson.

I would trade Viney in a heartbeat ahead of Brayshaw.

Ok, if we must..... Stretch for 1 & 2.

But we are getting shafted AGAIN!

Watch Dew turn him into a gun!

AFL wants them to use picks to get stars now to make them relavent

Well, many said the pp picks should have had the proviso that they are traded to get in experience. Low and behold, here they are. Can't see GCS doing better than Rowell and Anderson. Hope they don't [censored] it up again

Not convinced they want them to give up this year's top 2 picks when the situation is so perfect for them.

Getting Ablett didn't help their cause much, so I think this time it will be a different strategy rather than a big fish.

Some snippets to add to the situation at Gold Coast.

The stories about the Suns considering trading one or both of their top two draft selections are bad enough but now more information is emerging about the possibility that two of last year’s early draft picks will be flying the coop at the end of 2020.

St Kilda is supremely confident that it will secure Ben King after he serves out the second year of his contract. Apparently, the King family are staunch supporters of the Saints and they want Ben and Max at the club.

Now this -

SEVERAL VICTORIAN CLUBS FEEL PRIZED SUN IS OBTAINABLE: TWOMEY

This highlights the folly of the AFL’s comprehensive draft concessions which fly in the face of previous policy and which  are unlikely to help the club retain their prize recruits.

I think the days of an AFL club on the Gold Coast are numbered.

Looking back at the Suns’ season in 2019, they started in a blaze of glory and finished with a long losing streak to finish last. I have never heard anyone suggest they should be investigated for tanking like the AFL did to Melbourne but why not?

Earlier in the year they were winning games - by the end they were disgraceful. The media hounded us when we performed better.

The AFL doesn’t do those investigations these days.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
