Veery tough to pick 6:

6 Salem (best by a mile)

5 Melksham

4 Brayshaw

3 Harmes

2 Hunt

1 Sparrow

Worst also difficult as so many to choose from unfortunately!

The one positive from yesterday is that Salem finally looks ready to take the next step after many injury interrupted seasons.

I would love him and KK on the wings. He is just such a good user of the footy and his attack on the ball has improved out of sight.

6. Salem

Daylight

1. Sparrow for his endeavour and taking the heavy knocks.

Sparrow took a knock to the head early on, had head over the ball, low to the ground, when Powell-Pepper rammed his knee into the side of his the head.  It was obviously deliberate (P-P made no attempt to bend down or go for the ball).  P-P won't get cited as they will argue it was accidental in the course of play.  Sparrow took another heavy knock in the head area late in the game.   Credit to Sparrow that each time he just bounced back.  Like the roughing up that Oliver received, it was disappointing to not see teammates remonstrate for Sparrow's treatment.  Senior guys need to stand up for the kids.

2. Fritsch

1. Sparrow

6- Salem

5- Melksham

4- Brayshaw

3- Oliver

2- Hibberd

1- Gawn

6. Salem

5. Melksham

3. Brayshaw

2.Oliver

1. Hibberd

The first three deserve their votes; the last three I found extremely difficult to find. "Best of a bad lot" is the cliche that comes to mind.

A really bad day for the Demons, let themselves get roughed up by a young Port team and did nothing about it. May and Preuss can both come in and do something about it!

And the club house leader after Round 1 is Christian Salem:-

18. Christian Salem

12. Jake Melksham

10. Angus Brayshaw James Harmes

4. Michael Hibberd

3. Clayton Oliver Corey Wagner

2. Alex Neal-Bullen

1. Neville Jetta

Hold the phone there Demonland. How is ANB on the leader board after his stinker of a game when Fritsch and Sparrow polled more votes than him. Yes, I see one solitary poster gave him two votes (an attempt at humour, I hope).

I didn't give ANB votes, but thought about it. He was one of only a few players that consistently applied pressure. And, in my view, it was the lack of pressure across the ground, particularly by the midfielders and the forwards (with some exceptions, ANB being one) that cost us the game.

We randomly take 3 posters set of votes and add them together. We have always done it this way. Blame @Chook.

You can blame @Whispering_Jack too because he compiled them. I would have asked for a recount.

Absolutely, because you've got nothing better to do than trawl through every single vote each week.

RECOUNT!

..... pretty please

Usually takes half a season for a football team's admin to turn on none another. Demonland got there in a week. If this is any indication, it's going to be a long season at Demonland HQ.

I stand by my ANB votes. Who do I have to fight first?

Me. My argument is that other players were better (as few of them as there were).

I acknowledge he's fit - probably fitter than all of them, but I don't think you should get votes for being fit.  Being fit enabled him to apply pressure, unlike most in the team. The rest of his game was ordinary - including his attempted ball gathers which bounced off him, his points and his poor decisions, disposal and fumbles. Spargo applied pressure too.

Fight over. Roger wins.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
