Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Goodwin: 4th is Nothing to Us

I hear you Macca.  2018 was far more enjoyable as a supporter than any of the previous 12 to 18 years.  Getting thrashed every week sucked big time.  Winning more often than not and handling out a few thrashings of our own last year was alot of fun.  Playing well in finals and making an impact the way we did also provided a level of satisfaction.

But I was neither elated or shattered by us making the preliminary final and subsequently losing.  The present compeditiveness of the team certainly encourages me, but as a supporter who has seen us make it to and lose numerous preliminary and grand finals, just making a preliminary final doesn't seem a particularly victorious occasion.

Love the simmering ruthlessness that Goodwin has bought and the team are embracing.  The MFC has unfinished business until we bring home that next premiership and it can truely be a Grand Old Flag once more.

In the end the whole thing ended in a way not many could see ... we hadn't had a 'shocker' for quite some time but these things often happen when you least expect it.

But I have always felt that you learn more from a loss than a victory and lets face it,  we weren't the finished product last year and we probably aren't going to be the absolute finished product this year ... however,  we may not need to be as a team these days doesn't have to be a super-team to win big.

We've got 15+ bona-fide good players on the list so that gives me the confidence to know that if we're switched on and have a reasonable run with injuries,  we can have a very good year.

Last year was another terrific stepping stone and the overall year was infinitely better than any number of previous seasons.  That comment doesn't mean that I was at all fully satisfied but it was by no means a failed season.  Far from it.

I love Goodwin's attitude though and if I was a player I would use that last loss as huge motivation.  And I reckon we'll see what the team is all about early in the season.  I'm tipping we'll hit the ground running.

Reading this, I can close my eyes and imagine Bob Hawke on telly after we break the drought recapturing his Australia II celebrations “any boss who fires anybody for not turning up to work today is a bum” (but wearing the Cameron Schwab blazer).

I remember Little Johnny tried something similar in 1999 when we won the cricket world cup. Then he remembered that he had all the personality of a postage stamp and called it off.

Fully agree @Macca

Some of us have forgotten how bad things really were from 2008-2015.

I started supporting the Demons in 1989 and while we never were described as premiership contenders at any stage, we were usually a decent shot for the finals (1997 excluded).

2008-2015 was the first time that I could remember that we put the bloody cue in the rack most years before the season started  'because we were developing for a premiership'. We weren't serious of course and the results reflected that.

I go back a fair way and there's probably at least 25 forgettable years that I've seen ... we're a hearty bunch.  Tigers for punishment but we're still here and we aren't going anywhere either.

The ruthless bit in me wants to add another 10 good players to the list ... finals success is almost certainly guaranteed if you've got 25+ good players (top players) but there have been occasions when clubs have had lists that have been that strong.  Even in the recent past so it is do-able.

Didn't see it but our team in the 50's & early 60's had an excess of good players from what I've read and from what I've been told.  I'm not sure Smith was ever fully satisfied.  The past can often teach us what works.

I reckon a few of us could pop off this mortal coil winning the GF, football matches can be fatal when the excitement proves too much,  Dutch fans were literally dropping dead on the day their national team was knocked out of the 1996 European championship. Deaths among men from heart attacks and strokes soared by 50% (14 extra dead on the day)  when Holland were beaten by France in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.

So I just read up, that is the least of it. It should have said Zurich anyway, as our sponsor but had Allianz on the brain as they provide our corporate health insurance.

Send me a PM if you think there is case for boycotting Allianz If be happy to hear your POV. I don't want to derail thread.

This term always amused me, especially as he was taller than Hawke.

The second part of the original paragraph (re: postage stamp) was also part of the reason why he got tagged as that.

Just another typically derogatory Leftist term.

Triggered much bro? Maybe you should go back to your safe space.

Anyway, I bow out at this point. You've been warned about this more times than I've had hot dinners, and I'm not going to get banned because you want to play ideological warrior on a football message board.

Haha

I don't even know who you are.

Btw, it's not my side of politics that needs ''safe spaces''.

Fourth is looking not too bad after today.

One yesterdays form we wont even be close to the 8

We were comprehensively beaten on the outside and still have not addressed this issue.

Other free wheeling teams will scorch us if yesterday is any indication.

And we are talking Brisbane who IMV will be big improvers

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
